Darnell Coles resigns, Lee Tunnell and Dan Wright dismissed (per Haudricourt)

EDIT:

Assistant hitting coach Jason Lane was told he would be considered as a replacement for Coles but is free to pursue other opportunities.

The Brewers also announced that head athletic trainer Dan Wright will not return to the club.

The rest of the coaching staff – bench coach Pat Murphy, pitching coach Derek Johnson, third base coach Ed Sedar and first base coach Carlos Subero – were invited back for the 2019 season, as was the remainder of the medical staff.

Didn't see that coming. Considering the Brewers were relatively healthy this year, the news on Dan Wright is particularly surprising.

I’m guessing one of the injuries (or multiple) was handled in a way the Brewers weren’t particularly happy about.

Lee Tunnell is also interesting. Was he just a holdover still on contract and now they can find someone they want?

What did Lee Tunnell not answer the phone fast enough? I wonder what the actual reasoning was considering the bullpen was the strength of the team. I understand DJ has a lot to do with it, along with having talented pitches, but seems a little harsh.

Jimmy Nelson was the first person who came to mind. Otherwise the team was relatively healthy this year.

the Nelson injury wasn't the trainer's fault. It's a very hard injury to come back from. rotator cuff and labrum injuries have ended many careers. Pedro and Ramon Martinez, Alex Fernandez, Teddy Higuera, and many others weren't the same after them.

Where did anyone say it was his fault?

Surprising given relative level of health this season...must be something we don’t know.

Tunnell’s big claim to fame was fixing Axford. Maybe he’s just been around too long. He was also known more for being a roving instructor so maybe that’s a better fit for him. Would guess he just didn’t see eye to eye with DJ.

sorry, it was suggested the rehab was his fault.

Something in the rehab could have been his fault, we don’t know.

Tunnell's big claim to fame (imo) was being lauded as an exceptional pitching coach when he was the roving pitching instructor for the minors. He also 'fixed Axford', but the reason he was known on BF was his overall work (& pre-dating the Axford' 'fix').

I'm completely shocked that he's been let go. Makes me wonder if it was due to him asking for more money and/or a larger title/role, because it's hard to identify a performance-based reason for him being let go.

the offense was fine for the most part until the dodgers series, it though sounds like it wasn’t the brewers choice to replace coles. The tunnel thing is odd as the pen was the strength of the team all season. I will reserve judgement until I see the replacements.

Tunnell is surprising. Coles seems like a case of "about time to try a new voice."

Dan Wright? Who knows, sports medicine, training programs for pitchers, etc is changing rapidly with lots of different approaches. Could be the doctors the Brewers use suggested someone, etc.

Back to Tunnell, really have to wonder if its something personal, not directly related to job performance. I generally like the concept of continuing to shake things up with coaching staffs in pro sports, so as usual Ill trust Stearns since we dont even have half a clue what these coaches do, how the do it, if they get along, etc.

LOL at the speculation here about Dan Wright. I know absolutely 0 about the situation, but it's kind of hilarious to think that it is performance related--and how or why the internet would or should care about whether it is or or isn't. There are so many variables involved that it is just...I can't even...

Was the head custodian at Miller Park retained?!?

I know, I had the same thought. It is funny. He could have not gotten along with somebody for all we know.
