Manny Machado's Game 7 Crotch Grab

bani1717

I haven't read through all the threads from last night so I'm not sure if this was already discussed. But from the people I talked to it sounds like it wasn't obvious on TV.

After Machado beat out the throw for his single in the 2nd inning, he turned to the crowd (basically directly at Section 111 where I was sitting) and made a crotch grab gesture a few times. I found a video below, but I really don't think this does it justice, as it was even more blatant when he was looking right at the crowd.

Not that we needed more ammo against Machado, but it would be nice to see MLB crack down more on things like this. I'm also sick of seeing things like the suck it gesture. I've seen some Brewers (Aguilar and Arcia come immediately to mind) and Puig last night make a gesture that looked like the suck it gesture. I'm not sure if MLB hands out fines for this kind of stuff or not, but I wish they'd clean up it up by imposing something like an automatic ejection for that kind of crap.

The crotch grab wasn't nearly as painful as watching his ball sail over the CF wall for a three-run bomb, and didn't hurt nearly as much as the offense not doing much in the game.

Sorry, thought we were talking about Puig and the suck it gesture he made. They're both clowns, unfortunately who are going to the WS. Sucks.

Machado is a punk, plain and simple.

I wish no good fortune on the guy, I want his team to lose 4 straight, demoralizing him and Puig. I hope the two of them continue to embarrass themselves, and their organization.

Mlb has put out ads this postseason explicitly stating that they want their exciting young stars to be exciting and flamboyant.

Exciting and flamboyant sounds good. Flip your bat, stare down your HR, trash talk, celebrate like your life depended on it, I don't care. But in my mind there's a pretty clear line between all that and taunting your opponent or their fans with obscene gestures.

Let’s just make it WWE style. The NFL is already there. Might as well ruin another sport.
"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

It's the next step progressively.... that's why bat flips/stare downs/trash talk were negatively viewed for years. Besides it being selfish and not sportsmanlike, it naturally leads to much worse action. Make that ok and the "bad" boys will take it to the next step, as you've seen. No surprise.

Milwaukee brought this on itself relentless booing both for a week, telling him he sucks and erupting in a standing ovation every time he made an out. There was a MaCHEATo sign in the outfield at every game. And many other individual taunts directed at both all week.

Athletes, used to it, yadda yadda, but I can promise you winning that game and Puig sending one over the wall were cathartic moments for both. They're human beings who relished sticking it back in the fans' faces.

The fans poked the bear and got his crotch basically.

I saw a tweet from a guy saying the Dodgers complained to the Brewers about the fan treatment of Machado and Puig after Game 6 and the Brewers responded by telling the ushers to monitor fan behavior. Has anybody else seen or heard anything about this?

The guy did a crotch chop and were acting like he commited a felony. Was it necessary? No.

I just feel like suddenly calling the guy piece of Filth, and a garbage human being is super over-the-top. We have athletes beating women.... and we have pages of a game thread dedicated to retaliatory physical violence for a crotch chop. I guess I just don't even know where to start with that.

Everyone on this forum still bags on Brian McCann for blocking the plate when Carlos Gomez basically acted the same way after hitting a homerun. No, it wasn't the crotch chop, but Gomez was a clown on the field, who did stuff that infuriated opponent. Bat flips, gestures, staredowns, you name it, Gomez did it. But it's okay when it's our guy, right?

Couldn't really care less about all the antics and that crap. Ya, it's annoying but the only thing that will make it stop is to get the guy out and win the game (or maybe 95 around the shoulders, but that's a whole other mess). No league has any interest in doing anything about this stuff or else there would be ejections and suspensions and instead if they do anything it's small fine.

Puig didn't bother me. I know others don't like him, but I view him as a free spirit. There was plenty of animation from the Brewers when they were in LA from Pina, Aguilar & Cain that the fans were riding them on...I thought they were just excited. He reminds me of Carlos Gomez and we all loved the way he played. More unbridled enthusiasm than any malice.

Machado is different. He plays cheap and he's a punk. Yelich said it the best, "Dirty play by a dirty player". I'm not one to go all baseball machismo, but if there is ever a guy that needs to wear one it's that piece of garbage. I rooted hard for the Dodgers last year and have plenty of great friends I'd be very happy for if they won. I also feel there are plenty of upstanding guys on the Dodgers that are easy to root for like Turner, Taylor & Kershaw, but the thought of that turd getting a ring is way too raw right now. Go Sox.

How about we quit whining about it and actually score runs to send him home for the winter? Or if hes really that obnoxious throw behind him or something. Being someone that remembers Randy Moss mooning the crowd and laughing at it I really could care less what Machado did so long as we beat him for it.

Don't we enjoy rivalries? This is how they develop. The same thing happened with the Celtics and Bledsoe, and again we didn't shut them up for it.

I had zero problem with Moss mooning, given the context and that they moon the visitors. I hated his TD but his celebration was hilarious as far as I'm concerned.

I dislike machado as much as the next guy but I'm sure as heck not going to root for Boston about it. I'm just not going to root at all.

I’m all for loosening the “unwirtten rules” and letting the guys play withouth bench clearing brawls because a guy pumped his fist or watched his 450-foot home run for an extra second.

But if a guy rounds the bases giving the entire crowd the “suck it” gesture on national TV, I also have no problem with him getting a fastball in the ribs next time we play.

Strongly agree. Bat flips and general excitement are one thing. Vulgar gestures like that toward what could be children in the crowd is a whole new thing and not ok. This is right up there with Randy Moss. So what if the crowd boos you? It's in reaction to you being a dirty player. I suspect it's going to be someone like Corey Knebel who retaliates as well. I would find it incredibly surprising and weak if we didn't...assuming we get an opportunity next year. Hader won't do it, and really shouldn't. Knebel is a beast, Machado wouldn't want to mess with him...he's the perfect candidates in my opinion. Or else maybe Burnes toward the tail-end of his start.

And this will accomplish what?

Accomplish nothing except put a runner on base and jeopardize a game in a sport where we tied for the division this year and missed the playoffs by a game last year. If they don't throw at him, half this board will be saying Counsell is weak or something and that he doesn't support the team so they won't support him. It is childish lunacy, and maybe the only thing I hate about baseball. "Retaliate" by handing over a competitive advantage. Imagine if football teams retaliated by clocking a WR and getting pass interference.

In no facet of life is it deemed acceptable to hit somebody on purpose but for some reason it is OK in baseball, as long as the guy did something to mildly displease you first. So the same logic we admonish kindergarteners for.
