Need a catcher who can hit. Figure out 2b.

Be careful. The Dodgers have a catcher who can hit, and he was almost our NLCS MVP despite only playing half the time... if only he played more!

(Also, check out last years playoff playing time for Mr. Grandal)

An effective LOOGY would be nice. I agree with getting a catcher that can hit. I would also get a second basemen that can play anywhere on the infield so they have flexibility if Hiura proves to be ready. I don't spend money on a starter. Get Nelson ready to go and give Burnes and Woodruff a shot. I believe those additons will be a real shot in the arm to the pen. There are more arms coming through the system to help fill the bullpen gaps. Find some good bargains to manage the rest.

Stearns will continue to find ways to leverage maximum production out of underutilized assets. I see him continuing to build an elite bullpen and getting Counsell to utilize them in ways that are at next level analytics.

He also has some players he can trade to help restock the farm system. He will also continue to look for hitters who are more in the realm of Cain/Yelich and not 3TO hitters

We need starting pitching. Chacin can't be your 'ace'. I like what we are seeing in Woodruff and Burnes. Lord knows if Anderson or Jimmy Nelson will ever return to form. 502 is right, we need someone who can play 2B and put Shaw back to 3rd if Moose doesn't return. We also should shake up the coaching staff. Coles needs to go and I'm still no fan of Windmill Eddy.

I get your point about Grandal, but surely there is a middle ground. The offense was a disappoint in the first half of the year and in the NLCS. You have to assume regression for Yelich and Aguliar. I also anticipate regression of Chacin/Miley(if he is signed)/Hader but think other pitchers will improve to make up for that.

I am very excited to see Woodruff Burnes Peralta next year. Nelson Anderson Davies could contribute a lot next year too.

Overall very excited for 2019!

1. Non tender Schoop. That is an easy one.

2. Give Moose the option. He will decline it.

3. Buy out Soria. He is 34 and no one spends $10M on your 4th best reliever.

4. Get a 2B who can play for 2019 who can get on base. See point 8.

5. I don’t see him spending on a catcher. It will be Pina and low end and low cost back up like Bettencourt or Nottingham.

6. The OF is set due to long term contracts so there are no improvements there.

7. The 1B platoon of Thames and Aguilar along with the occasional Braun is probably our only realistic option. I don’t see anyone giving us much for any of them and Santana apparently can’t play first. No we are not getting Goldy without giving up young guys we have no intent on giving up.

8. See what the market is for Ray and Santana who are blocked due to the contracts of our 3 main OFers and neither profiles as 4th OF.

9. We really need another Jeter situation where he gets in over his head and needs to dump his best players so we can react.

I think that the candidates we currently have to become an "Ace" are likely better than anything we could conceivably acquire at a fair market value.

i could be wrong, and if I am I trust that Stearns and Co. will find the right guy to fill that role.

Catcher: Look for a reasonable improvement in free agency to pair with Nottingham/Pina.

First base: Commit to Braun at first for 2019, with Thames as the backup there and in left.

Second base: Stick with Shaw, keep Schoop for use against lefties.

Shortstop: Arcia gets a shot based on the post-season, but if he slumps, Schoop goes in.

Third base: Keep Moustakas on for one season - buy time for Erceg to develop.

Left field: Yelich.

Center field: Cain

Right field: Santana

Bench: Granderson becomes the 4th outfielder, Perez is the super-sub, Thames is the backup 1B/LF/RF, Schoop backup IF, and there is a catcher

Rotation: Re-sign Miley, then go for Kikuchi to go with three of the Davies/Burnes/Woodruff/Nelson.

Bullpen: Build around Jeffress, Knebel, Hader, and Peralta. I'd give Quintin Torres-Costa a long look, then look at Lyles and Guerra to round it out.

My thinking is to use Aguilar and Anderson to replenish the system or as the centerpieces of a deal to bring in a top-flight catcher.

I think Stearns will take another look at SP, and again try to find someone to plug into the rotation. I know we have a ton of options (Burnes, Woodruff, Peralta, Davies, Chacin, Anderson, Nelson), but I just have a gut feeling that Stearns is going to try again to find a #2 or #3 type guy. He may find the prices too high again this winter (likely), but I suspect he'll at least test the waters.

I think he'll add one more piece to the bullpen, as he usually does. It will be interesting to see how Jeffress bounces back from his (frankly brutal) post-season performance. I think Stearns will go after a power lefty/loogy, and be done with Jennings and Cedeno. Jennings was ok against lefties, but it just seemed like he never got the big outs when absolutely needed. I know perception isn't reality always, but I feel like the team needs a loogy that's better than Jennings. The fact that he wasn't on the post-season roster is pretty telling, IMO.

I have no idea what Stearns thinks or may do about 2B. Paying 10mil for Schoop is going to be awfully steep if he doesn't bounce back in a major way. If he's even halfway between 2017 and 2018 Schoop, he could be worth it. .260 with 25 homers and a .750 OPS would be fine, as he plays solid D and proved to be more than capable of handling SS in a pinch.

Also suspect he'll find a new hitting coach. You can say what you will about the impact a hitting coach does or doesn't have, but I think Darnell Coles makes a fine scapegoat.

Chacin is a 4th starter who had a good year.

Burnes, Woodruff, and hopefully Nelson are our top hopes for the rotation in no particular order. Miley pitched well enough to earn a contract that won’t make smart financial sense to us.

I like Davies to bounce back. Maybe someone will give us something for Chase? Peralta is a really good long reliever. That isn’t a knock against him because we need a guy like that more than most teams but he doesn’t have the arsenal to be a TOR guy.

A rotation of Burnes, Woodruff, Nelson, Chacin, and Davies isn’t bad at all and has some upside.

My thinking is the Crew does what it takes to get Kikuchi in the fold, and they bring back Wade Miley.

Burnes, Kikuchi, Woodruff, Chacin, Miley is the rotation I'd want to see - with Davies and Nelson on the outside looking in at this point.

ALSO: I would love to hear what the old school poster with the Darth Maul Avatar who wrote essay after essay on this site (mostly correct essays) thinks about our future.

Somebody should be able to remind me of his user name... (I assume he was a "he"...HA)

TheCrew07. And yes, he was a he.

I don't think he still checks in anymore. At least... I haven't noticed him or any posts by him.

Getting value for our misfit toys will be important. Of Anderson, Davies, Thames, and Santana, I can see one, maybe two fitting into the plans for next year. I can also see a lot of teams being able to use them better than we were able to. Not sure if the return yields a utility bat, bullpen arm, or prospects, but there's value there that would be unfortunate to part with for nothing.

He hasn't posted here in over 2 years unfortunately. I loved reading his stuff. It's ironic that as soon as soon as Stearns started righting this ship by acquiring talent throughout the system, TheCrew07 stopped posting, as that was something I seem to remember him always clamoring for.
