Replacing Gio Gonzalez on the NLCS roster (UPDATE: Zach Davies added to NLCS Roster)

I fully agree that starting Davies today makes a lot of sense, other than the problem that starters typically don't want to have a start sprung on them the day of.

He was just announced as the roster replacement, but they don't say he's starting today so guessing they're sticking with Miley.

I think its pretty clear the plan was to start Woodruff in Game 6 and Chacin in 7.

I guess we will find out if that plan is changed after last nights result. Either Davies or Woodruff is going to be needed today. Hope Burnes might be able to give something as well.

Knoebel? Hader? seem unlikely to be available. Peralta...Guerra... almost certainly out.

Having Cedeno as a situational lefty who is having trouble retiring lefties has hamstrung this team a bit. This is all hindsight, but I think having Anderson or even Jordan Lyles on the roster would be more valuable, as both can obviously give you multiple innings.

I think Hader is out today for sure, as are Peralta and Guerra. I don't want to see Knebel, but it wouldn't surprise me if he pitched today. Burnes may be able to go, but I'd like to see him get a couple days to recharge. Soria should be fine.

I'd go with Anderson. Davies has been just as much of a powder keg this year. You're always worried about that 2-HR inning from him. I think every fear that applies to Chase should apply to Davies as well, particularly since he had a nagging injury for most of the year and was never his old self. He does have a good history in a limited sample against the Dodgers, but we didn't see that Zach Davies much this year.

Here's hoping Woodruff and Miley can go the whole game. PH'ing for them is not as criticial as it is with some other pitchers, so that's possibly a slight plus. It would amazing if Woodruff became a postseason legend with another dinger off Kershaw. Even a hit would make him a Milwaukee folk hero.

How about this? Woodruff is pitching today regardless. So why not start him? This way, after 3-4 innings you'll have a better idea how the game is going. You can roll with Miley after Woodruff if you have the lead, otherwise go with Davies.

Not sure if Woodruff is pitching today regardless.

I think they want to start him in game 6 or we would have seen him last night.

I think CC wanted to save him for today considering how much of the pen he blew through yesterday. It's also hard to say how Miley will fare on short rest.

I think Anderson's stuff is better than Davies's, but his propensity to give up homers is frightening, especially against this lineup. That said, in an early afternoon West Coast game with the wind likely blowing in, I would have trusted him in today's game. I have no evidence to back this up, but it seems like Davies was more prone to blow-up innings this year, and that just wasn't because of HRs. Chase gave up HRs, but for the most part he was effective limiting damage, as evidenced by his solid ERA.

I think Woodruff goes today as the next guy after Miley, whenever he comes out. Getting 5 solid from Miley would be terrific, then you could go to two from Woodruff, and end it with Soria and Jeffress. I agree that it would be awesome to see Woodruff get at least one AB against Kershaw.

Starting Davies today with about 12 hours notice to someone who wasn't even on the roster would be advocating punting today's game in essence.

It's apparent that Counsell is sticking to his plan for today and sticking with Miley as the starter.

Today's game is pivotal and huge. Brewers HAVE to wake up the bats and find a way to beat Clayton Kershaw once again.

Did Counsell come right out and say Hader is unavailable today? If not, with a late lead today I could see him going an inning. He pitched one inning each of the past two days for a total of 28 pitches (obviously that doesn't include the effort to warm up and get ready to come in). Hard to say if he'd have his normal stuff and his normal command pitching a third straight day, but if Counsell believes he does, this would be the time to pitch him a third day in a row with an off day tomorrow.

Obviously there is some risk/reward there so I wouldn't at all be surprised if he's unavailable either.

Anderson's BB/9 was a career high this season as was his HR/9. Yet, he had a .228 BA against. Quite the enigma. I wonder if unofficially he has "dead arm" as he seemingly was shut down a few weeks ago --- Sept. 18 being his last start.

I think they like making LA take out their lefties and then being able to counter with a hard throwing righty like Woodruff/Burnes.

That's what I first speculated. Career high in innings I think, and I'm not sure he missed a single start. They want to avoid another Marcum situation before it happens. Reading the early warning signs, if you will. By the same token, I figured they left Davies off in part because he had a nagging injury all year. They usually (not withstanding their use of JJ) understand that very few people on this staff are so much better than the other options that they need to be in there even if they're not fully healthy or fully rested, or if they're working too many times through the order in the case of starters.

The more I think about it the more it seems to me like they are going to go with Chacin in game 6 on short rest.

That would allow them to pitch Woodruff for a couple innings today in relief of Miley and still be able to bring him back to pitch a few in game 7 if we are still alive in a All hands on deck elimination game.

CC said the decision would be made at game time.....doubt we will know it until he warms up or doesn't get used in a situation that we would obviously use him.
