2018-10-17 (NLCS Game #5): Brewers (Miley) at Dodgers (Kershaw) 4:05 PM CDT [Brewers lose, 5-2]

Eye Black

You're allowed to do it on a ground ball because the fielders have to make a play when both the runner and the hitter are running a hard as they can to avoid it. On an infield fly the fielders don't have to do anything except realize that whatever the runners do they're screwed; they'll either get doubled off or forced out. On a line drive the runner or runners can stay close enough to get back and make the next base if it goes through.

I guess what's arbitrary and dumb is ultimately a matter of opinion. In my view it is fortunate that the people who wrote the rule and most (at the least) baseball fans don't think it's arbitrary and dumb, and that you don't need unanimity to enact a rule.

Let's focus on more important things like clutch

OK, anyone who thinks clutch doesn't exist must have never interacted with another human being before. Do you know people who can talk to you just fine but then completely tense up giving a large presentation? Do you know people who can talk to their sister no problem but completely tense up talking to a random woman at a bar? Do you know someone who is really smart but "can't take tests"? Did you know someone in little league who was praying that ball wasn't hit to them with the bases loaded, but love taking grounders in practice? The people who do not fall into these categories are "clutch"

The problem is that most people think clutch is a magical thing that makes you better, but rather clutch is really the ability to not choke. That is why there is no "evidence" for it, because people are looking for someone to consistently hit 50 points higher with RISP than without over their entire career or something. There is plenty of evidence for clutch because people don't hit 50 points lower consistently over their entire career in ties games etc. I think a minimum requirement for being a professional athlete is that you have to be clutch. If not you will get weeded out before the professional level. So relative clutch-ness is not very different across the league.

If you don't want your runners to have that problem don't hit an infield fly then.

LOLOLOL, is this real life? Or was this intended to be in blue?

I can't believe there is still a debate about RBIs. In 2018. And "clutchness". Lordy.

Haha, did you catch the Infield Fly Rule discussion last night as well?

Jesus, let it go. One guy said it, and about ten people told him he was wrong. There wasn’t a discussion until you woke it up.

I'm both really looking forward to, and dreading, this game. I have the suspicion that it's going to be another low-scoring pitcher's duel. Our last game like that ended 13 hours ago!

LOL, my confidence comes and goes by the hour. I do feel like one team or the other has a breakout offensive game. Don't know which one though.

but it's not like every guy suddenly forgot every piece of advice he gave

We agree on that one !! Pretty much what I've said on the topic. It's more that choking is a thing, not that people get magically better in clutch

Haha exactly! How can someone so wrong on the infield fly rule be so right on this one?!

IDK how you guys do it. This has happened twice in my life, not gonna miss it.

My thoughts exactly. These team is really talented and most players are under team control, but there is no guarantee we will see this again for a long time. Win or lose, you have to take a step back and realize how special this run/team/season really is.

Yep, it seems cliche but every pitch means something and every AB could alter the course of the series. It's super intense and fun to be a fan of. It was ridiculous the spots that were being hit and the pitches being made by both sides last night.

Ok, maybe I can get on board with this. I just don't think any one professional athelete, or to be more specific, baseball player, is more "clutch" than the another over the long term.

Please be a quick Brewers win tonight. I have Foo Fighters tickets and I really don't want to be checking my phone constantly during the show.

Or just jump out 8-0. That would work too.

I’m going too and I think they’ll be playing the game on the big screen in front of the arena.

As for the game ... I’m expecting and bracing for the worst, but hoping for the best.

Hope you are right. But this mornings game seems like it will be the focal point of some Dodgers special release championship DVD.

Wow man ... I know you are down after game 4, but geez. Can you please lighten up on the pessimism? The series is tied 2-2.

Please stop trying to dictate people's feelings and posting habits.

I'm far from the only person here who feels this way. In fact, it turned into kind of a major thing here earlier this year.

But you have a point. I'm going to refrain from going "there" in the future. Like a lot of fans, this morning was rough for me too.

I'm going to Foo Fighters also, and the "Eagles" tomorrow tonight. Probably selling the Eagles tixs though.

This team has responded well when tested. This is playoff Kershaw, who we beat in game 1.

I'm going with Brewers 6, Dodgers 4.

Agree. Aside from that bad stretch before the ASB. It seems that after a gut punch type loss they've always responded well the next game. Take game 3 as an example. Who knows if it's just selective memory but hope it holds true today

I think it is one thing to be annoyed with people losing their minds on every pitch in May. Now is the time to lose your mind and I won't apologize for experiencing the full spectrum of emotions from minute to minute.

I know exactly where you're coming from. Every negative thought about this series was going through my head last night and this morning as well. I was thinking it, but maybe reading it here kinda solidified the realism of it all. I apologize if you were offended.
