Comparisons Between Current Team and 1982 Team

I have a great feeling about this current Brewers team. I did not have this same feeling in 2008 or 2011. Although I love the Brewers as a franchise, those teams were not the most likable and the locker room was split into different factions. Plus, both of those teams were poor defensively and were also very strike out prone. Compare those teams to the franchise's gold standard - the 1982 Brewers and you begin to realize how far those team were from getting to the World Series, even though they made the playoffs. Besides having incredible talent with four Hall-of-Famers (Simmons should be in too & that would make it 5), the 1982 Brewers were extremely close in the locker room. Remember they used to rush to get to the stadium everyday to play a game called flip (pepper) before the regular baseball game started. In addition, the 1982 team had a great bench especially defensively, World Series experience with Fingers, Cooper, and Sutton, and they had the best player in baseball in Robin Yount. There are lots of similarities with this current Brewers team starting with the great team chemistry, maybe the best bench in baseball, great defense, World Series experience with Cain, Moustakas, and Granderson, and they also have the best player in baseball in Christian Yelich. Both teams have great hitters with speed early in the line-up followed by big boppers in the middle! The 1982 team had slightly better starting pitching than this current Brewers team, but the current team has one thing the 1982 Brewers didn't have at playoff time, a strong bullpen. That's because, as you know, Rollie Fingers was injured and he is probably the reason as to why that team lost the 1982 World Series. BTW - before the extra tie break game this week with the Cubs both teams finished with identical records at 95-67. The bullpen, if it doesn't break down, is really the x-factor in all of this for the current team. None of this really means anything regarding the future success of the 2018 Brewers. However, it does illustrate that they are a worthy World Series candidate, unlike the 2008 and 2011 teams. As I indicated, I really like this team.

If they get past the Rockies, and that is a big "if", I would really like to play the Atlanta Braves in the NLCS. That way this city can exorcise the demon of the Milwaukee Braves once and for all if we beat them for a trip to the World Series! I wish we would have played them in the 1982 World Series instead of the Cardinals!

Thank you for reading. I would appreciate your comments.

Hank Aaron hit the biggest home run of his career on September 23, 1957, not April April 4, 1974.

I completely agree with your comparison between this current team of ours and the one from 1982--which as many of you might know was known by the great nickname Harvey's Wallbangers. That's a funny name, because not only did that team hit a lot of balls that went off the wall, but it's also an alcoholic drink ;). If any teenagers are reading this, that wink means that alcohol, while prevalent in society, is BAD for you.

This topic absolutely sucks.

I don't disagree. The faster we stop comparing and talking about the 1982 team, the better.

A world series win will do wonders for putting the 82 team to bed.

Every team is different. What sets this team apart is 1) the depth. Every player, every pitcher has a purpose on the roster, and they had to leave good players off it. 2) The intelligent way the players are used. Two days off and they go with a bullpen game. It's crazy, but brilliant if you have the pen arms for it. All September they had the starters go 4 or 5 innings and then threw good fresh pen arms at teams, and the starters didn't wear down like has happened in previous years. The result was the Brewers dominating September and taking the division, plus the first two games of the division series.
