Building a 2019 super-pen

clancyphile
Why do we have to trade them for an ace? Why do we need an ace? How about we just stop making our starters pitch the 6th when they aren't doing that well or get them out when they struggle in the 5-6th? Our starters have numbers way better than they are because we have such a good deep bullpen. Do what we are doing now.

Why even have an ace who can only pitch 1 out of 5 days...and that day your offense might just drop an egg rendering that ace totally wasted. deGrom had out of this world stats yet his team went 14-18 in his starts.

I have always been a fan of creating a super pen...which we essentially trot out there these days. Just make sure we have some solid starters and we will win a ton of games. The super pen can win a championship...it is why people are picking us to get to the WS. Bullpens also tend to be more reliable come October vs. starters.

Super pen for life. Destroy opponents in the games you have a chance to win and not waste your best pitchers in games you have low odds of winning.

Absolutely fantastic take! This is THE key to title. We have a good opportunity for a “super pen” at some point this year in my opinion. We could have it now with woody Burnes and peralta to pen, but hurt starting staff too much. Mid-season more realistic with a hopefully healthy jeffress.Brown,Woody,Guerra pitching 2-3 innings, Claudio, Knebel, Hader, Jeffress,Kimbrel. With our line-up and rotation > best team in baseball. Even with-out Kimbrel maybe.

Well with Burnes in the pen now, Peralta being groomed for the pen when Anderson back, we are 2 arms closer to the superpen that will win a title. When Nelson is back, another multi-inning arm to the pen, so that will be 3.

June 1:

Peralta (multi-inning)

Anderson (multi-inning)

Albers

Claudio

Jeffress

Burnes

Guerra

Hader

With Woodruff and Nelson in the rotation, then later in the year, the crew might want to protect Nelson and Woody’s innings so maybe one or both to the bullpen creating the superpen. Imo, jeffress the key, if he can get close to last year’s jj we’d be unbeatable if we led after 4.

Playoffs:

Starters-

Nelson

Gio

Chacín

Davies

Superpen-

Peralta

Anderson

Woodruff

Claudio

Jeffress

Burnes

Guerra

Hader

I wouldn’t call Peralta’s role as being part of the pen. I think they like the timing getting him ready and bringing him in better than having him warm up and then sit around during the anthem and announcements.

When Anderson comes back if he continues where he left off, I would start him rather than put him in the pen. He struggled badly in the pen so far this year. 10 IPs - 10 hits - 5 runs w/3 HRs - 4.50 ERA -1.40 WHIP. Nelson would be my choice for a pen arm. I still think they need a closer to be as good as last year. Hader isn't a guy who can close games day after day. Jeffress isn't the same guy this year. Right now they have nobody to fill that role. In a short series a closer is extremely valuable.

Outside of the brewers signing kimbrel,(not likely imo) or trading for a closer type pen arm(colome,Herrera)again not likely, too much prospect capital required, instead I think the crew believes they have the back end in good shape with Guerra Burnes. Guerra is nails, I would argue better than ANYONE we could get by trade. And Burnes easily could be another lock down late inning arm.

Hader Guerra Burnes is our new 3 headed monster, which last year, we never really had all three of Hader jeffress knebel clicking at the same time. Claudio as a Loogy better than what we had last year. Then there’s jeffress, who has been better by the appearance, and even if, isn’t what he was for 5+ mo.last year, could still help the pen big time.
