2018-10-02 (& 03): Wild Card Playoff Games

Eye Black

As long as the Cubs have money to spend (forever) they will just buy any pieces they feel they need.

Must be nice.

Makes it that much sweeter to foil their plans.

The bill is coming due for their big contracts - they will have to rebuild their farm system at some point.

Maybe they get Harper/Machado, but they will see other losses. Furthermore, their farm system is going to be a hot mess for a few years.

that visitor's clubhouse is getting a workout at Wrigley!

The clean up crew is best in the Biz.

Why? Is Baez on the cleanup crew? MVP!

Possibly, he can swing a broom and mop with the best of them I presume. Actually Arenado made a great quip about that prior to the game yesterday.

Only if they have to apply tags, if that is the case, he would be great on the clean-up crew. He is the best tagger in MLB.

So did anyone listen to Chicago sports radio today?

I had WSCR on coming to work.

Pundit: "Bryant has appeared gun shy after taking that pitch to the face. He'll need the off-season to get his head back together. Maybe he has PTSD?"

Caller: "They struggled because not enough team speed. The guys are too slow."

Caller from Racine: "I've noticed Bryant's numbers started declining right after he got married. Maybe the Cubs should trade him away."

Hendriks reminding me why I'm not fond of "bullpenning"

"Severino allowed five of the first six Twins to reach, gave up two homers and found himself trailing 3-0 an eye blink into the win-or-go-home game. Severino did not elicit a swinging strike on any of his 29 pitches"

Yeah because that kind of thing can't happen to a starter. Him giving up a 2 run HR had 0 to do with bullpenning.

Don’t say this often but I think the ump has been fantastic today. Refused to give in and cal the pitch off the corner

Yeah I agree with this, especially after watching how terrible the guy who did the other wild card game was.

Total knee-jerk reaction on my part, but it's my fear. Anybody can give up runs, but I just think mentally, there is probably some different emotions to deal with for Hendriks that are unfamiliar that could lead to runs that wouldn't otherwise.

For those that sometimes like to pick on Brian Anderson. After having the pleasure of watching full games the last two days with national announcers (assuming most watched Cubs game too), is it not clear that Anderson is better than all of them?

It is beyond clear that the stat cast guys who don't have a lot of experience announcing were by far better than anyone else at it. Kind of sad really just how knowing baseball and not just spitting out every cliche you ever heard makes the game so much more enjoyable.

Informative, unbiased, on point, smooth delivery - the total package.

Isn’t the PBP guy from the statcast game

Just the regular PBP guy from the whitesox ?

Yeah he was one of them, Mike Petriello seemed to drive it all though. It is just odd that an alternate non traditional broadcast was like 100 times better than the normal game coverage. They seriously need to change how they are covering the game. The ESPN coverage was just painful to watch for that game and as soon as I was reminded that the other cast existed the game was way more enjoyable.

Funny you mention that, kicking myself for missing that. I saw it on both channels but assumed it was just Spanish until someone pointed it out to me in like the 9th inning and how great it was, by then I had my contacts out so couldn't see the stuff though. I think Perez was announcing though (I think he did our cubs game) and he's horrible.

I actually like Vasgersion (probably slight lean to BA over him but kind of a tossup) and have no major complaint on Arod either so I never really went away. For 'national' guys Matty or Costas are the best guys, blows my mind they continue giving the WS to Joe Buck because of his dad. I guess my comment probably should be more directed our Cubs announcers and other national games in general, like whoever it was announcing the Cubs/Cards game on Saturday, both guys were terrible. It was a former Cubs pitcher and the chunky ESPN guy with glasses who's on a lot, I guess I shouldn't call him terrible since he's probably being held down by such a brutal color guy.
