2019 MLB Draft

I like the idea of taking Noah Song at 28, and seeing how his Navy commitment shakes out. If they can't sign him, the worst thing that could happen is that they get an extra 1st rounder in what may be better draft next year.

But I honestly don't have any strong convictions on the myriad guys who are feasible picks at 28.

So the Brewers have 9 picks in the first 10 rounds. Even though I think that first pick will be a bat, I'd guess 6 of the first 9 picks are pitchers. Anybody else care to take a guess of the hitter/pitcher breakdown of the first 9 picks?

It seems like that’s how most of our drafts have been for the last decade. I like loading up on some bats if they are there just because of the lack of hitting depth we have.

I'll have an aggregated top 350 prospects up tomorrow. This is based on lists from BA, PG, MLB, PBR, etc. Would be up now but the formatting is a bear.

This is who I have at the Brewers picks (not a prediction):

28. Hunter Barco, LHP, Bolles HS (FL)

65. Jack Kochanowicz, RHP, Harriton HS (PA)

133. Karl Kauffman, RHP, Michigan

163. Drake Fellows, RHP, Vanderbilt

193. Dylan Eskew, RHP, Sickles HS (FL)

223. Jasiah Dixon, OF, Orange Lutheran HS (CA)

253. Caleb Kilian, RHP, Texas Tech

283. Thomas Wilhite, RHP, West Ouachita HS (LA)

313. Nick Wallerstedt, RHP, Phoenix Mountain Pointe HS (AZ)

343. Chase Murray, OF, Georgia Tech

Toby, any Horizon HS kids from Az? Kody Huff?

Given that from what I have read this draft isn’t supposed to be the best for college pitchers, I doubt it is a massive split. I’d guess 3 hitters, 4 pitchers among the slot guys with the senior signs tipping it one way or the other.

Shewmake over McConnell would be an incredible disappointment. McConnell has better tools in every category, especially arm and power, but has a better hit tool too. Shewmake is a slightly more inspiring clone of Allemand, not someone with a big league future.

No worries though, Tod Johnson was promoted to the top spot because he doesn't ignore the numbers. We'll get someone exciting.

Big thanks to And That for posting the list. What a wonderful reference to have when watching the draft!

I'll go with Gunnar Henderson as my guess. I could also see Stearns loving Maurice Hampton, but with his potential as a football cornerback and the Brewers lacking just a bit of flexibility after trading/losing a couple picks...I just don't think he is "as likely" as some of the other candidates. But all the bats in that part of the draft, I really don't think one is any sort of step down from the other. Henderson, Hampton, Shewmake, Hoese, Callihan, etc...I'd be happy with any of those guys. Have to say that I really wish the Brewers had that comp pick, but easy to say that now. I'm sure I'd feel otherwise if Claudio had a sub-3.00 ERA, too bad Stearns lacks that crystal ball that all of us wish we had.

Completely agree, can’t thank Toby enough for providing such a great draft resource.

This is by far the least I’ve followed the draft prospects in quite a few years.

One random observation, there are two prospects in the top 120 named Brennan Malone and Brennan Milone. Teams are going to have to be extra careful when submitting their card for the former in the 1st round. :)

With the Brewers drafting so far down the board it is nearly impossible to project their pick. I always prefer hitters to pitchers in the 1st round, but it seems the value in the Brewers range may skew towards the available arms. I’ll throw out a prediction before Monday night.

Look for these names of draft day -- Brewers always end up drafting some of the players they bring in:

G.J. Hill and Glenn Santiago, along with Mahki Backstrom and Joshua Romero, attended a pre-draft workout with the Milwaukee Brewers at Miller Park.

(Note: I know nothing of the names pre-draft, I dig in once the Brewers draft and/or sign...)

Similar to Christian Yelich and Brice Turang, Mahki Backstrom and Joshua Romero were members of the Brewers Area Code Games team.

Here is some footage of Joshua Romero hitting at the Brewers Maryvale complex (Twitter Link).

Toby, nice job with that aggregate top prospect list. It looks like it could be the Brewers drafting effort.

I see Gunnar Henderson's name mentioned a few times/places. He's a guy that is creeping up a little as we approach the draft so I would be a little surprised if he got to #28. If he's there and they take him that's an exciting pick.

Callihan has a lot of Brett Lawrie qualities. An offense-first player with enough veratility to play a few different positions, partly because he can but also partly because he doesn't really stand out at any one spot. like Lawrie, he could catch, but I think you put him at 2B/3B and let his bat carry him as quickly as it can.

Here are some names I like, a lot of them aren't necessarily in the #28 range but with the gap until their next pick I could see them taking someone they really like that they know won't fall until their next pick:

College:

Ryan Garcia, RHP, UCLA – 4-pitch mix, can really pitch, FB sits 89-93

Ryan Jensen, RHP, Fresno State – similar to Corbin Burnes as a similar stage, throws low/mid-90s, touches higher, sharp breaking ball, really improved

Matt Wallner, OF, Southern Miss - big, physical LHH, prototype RF with big arm, power, turned it on lately, very produtive 3-year career

Greg Jones, SS, UNCW - quick-twitch SS, premium athlete, really fast, 1st-step quickness, good glove, range, 5-tool MIF

Aaron Schunk, 3B, Georgia - UGA's 3B & closer, can throw low/mid-90s, impacts the ball hard, big physical build, plays 3B well

High School:

Tre Fletcher, OF, ME - re-classified to 2019 from 2020 class this spring, big, strong, physical, 5-tool talent, scouts trying to catch up on him

JJ Goss, RHP, TX - low/mid-90s, can touch higher, high-spin breaking ball, loose and lanky, projectable

Anthony Volpe, SS, NJ - gamer-type, hard-nosed, good not great tools, knows how to hit/play the game, will be a star at Vanderbilt if he gets there

Tyler Callihan, IF/C, FL - mentioned above

Matthew Lugo, SS, PR - loose and rangy SS from Puerto Rico, can impact the ball, still filling out, looks the part, will get bigger

I’d just like to see Jack Washburn end up a Brewer. After watching him at State Track Meet I grew even more impressed with him. He is just a stud of an athlete. Not a power arm but like his dad, simply knows how to pitch & can mix in 3 very good off speed pitches. Not sure what round he is projected & how early he needs to go to skip out on Oregon state but just something I’d like to see

Proud member since 2003 (geez ha I was 14 then)

FORMERLY BrewCrewWS2008 and YoungGeezy don't even remember other names used

Matthew Lugo, SS, PR - loose and rangy SS from Puerto Rico, can impact the ball, still filling out, looks the part, will get bigger

Patrick, thanks for providing the list and cliff notes! I watched a handful of short videos of these players, and Matthew Lugo’s swing looks incredibly polished. I thought your “looks the part” comment really rang true, even though it was obviously just some brief video glimpses. Any idea why he isn’t higher on draft boards? I saw some comments about lack of power and maybe debate over whether he has to move to 2B or 3B long term. His frame definitely looks like it has some room to grow with hopefully additional strength to come. I would be ecstatic if the Brewers took a shot on developing Lugo.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

Theres something to be said about kids like Washburn and Jack Leiter who grew up around the game. So much of success is mental over physical..... and kids like this already know what to expect, already have a comfortable living (unlike a poor kid getting a huge life changing bonus). Id take Leiter in rd 1.

The success of Vlad Jr., Bichette, Quantrill, Weathers, Hayes, etc is a testament to this. I doubt its "in their genes".

To be honest, with the team doing well on the field and the brewers having a low pick, I have really not been up on this draft. That being said, I did try to do some research over the weekend so I atleast have an idea of who they could take at 28. I'll predict Greg Jones from UNC-Wilmington. DS has a type and he definitely fills it and will probably be taken around 23-29. That being said I did like what other posters said about Lugo and would like that pick too.
