I was all for leaving good Hader on the mound in the ninth. However, Any word on why Woodruff was warming instead of Jeffress? Is Jeffress hurt or was he off limits for some crazy reason?

If Rizzo gets on in the 9th, would Woodruff have been called upon to get the last out for the division title? Finding this fascinating that he was up throwing.....

He pitched in 3 of the last 5 games I think... maybe they just decided they were saving him with it not being an elimination game.

Seems weird to not disclose that.

It sure worked well when Davey Lopes didn't disclose that Leskanic was unavailable, and Bill Castro started stretching in the bullpen, causing the opponents to think we had an available reliever.

Was he in the bullpen today?

It’s all just not quite right. Not even being at the ballpark because of a stiff neck in a huge game this week? Not being available today because of

“Undisclosed reasons”? Seems easy to explain if there were an easy explanation, and the explanations provided can’t help but confuse me as a fan. I am not trying to conjecture, I certainly don’t know anything other than this is all just...abnormal.

If he’s not available because you’re saving him for a potential Wild Card game, you would just say that.

Hope the best for JJ, perhaps my favorite Brewer and want badly to see him close out big series this month.

I don't find any of this strange. He wasn't at the ballpark the other week because he was in the midst of a day-to-day injury and probably being treated for it. You probably wouldn't sit in the bullpen/dugout if you had a migraine headache, much less neck spasms.

He was at the park today and in uniform, just wasn't available probably because he's pitched a lot lately and we were planning on a big game tomorrow.

Inexcusable if Woodruff would have trotted out there in the 9th under any situation with a healthy Jeffress. Nuts.

I won't pretend to know the meaning of JJ's "unavailability".

Here's my guess: Woodruff warming in the 9th signaled to me that it was Hader's inning. They were either going to lose the game with Hader on the mound in the 9th, or Woodruff was coming in to pitch the 10th in a tie game.

can't say something was inexcusable until you know the excuse

It would have been more inexcusable to burn JJ and Hader and not have either available for a wild card game. By saving JJ, he would have been available for more than one inning today. Fortunately everything worked out perfectly. I find it hard to second guess the results from yesterday.

This is pretty obviously what was going on. JJ was being saved for today. Woodruff could have gone multiple innings and extras, saving the rest of the pen.

I think you are 100% correct. Jeffress pitched high-leverage innings on Friday and Saturday, so pitching him yesterday, then turning around and pitching him today would have been asking a lot.

I too just wish they would have come out and said that, instead of the "undisclosed" crap. I truly believe that JJ has his life in order, but with any guy who has has demons in his past, there is always a chance, however tiny, that they can come back.

So then why the "undisclosed reasons" line? Just say he was being saved for today.

and I'm not suggesting we have a right to know what's going on but I don't think it was a simple roster management thing. Seems JJ is doing OK and that's the important thing.
