2018-10-01 (Game 163): Brewers (Chacín) at Cubs (Quintana) 12:05 PM CDT [Brewers win 3-1; 2018 NL Central Champs!]

Eye Black
I'm kind of expecting cc to save chacin for Tuesday. I think they said something in pregame about cc not really treating today's game as important, so I'm expecting close to the same tomorrow.

All this angst about who starts. Does it really matter? We will throw out one of our starters that has a 50/50 chance of being good for four innings and hope for the best. The analytics will decide who that is.

You are right. Even if the chosen starter pitches great, they'll be lucky to get 5 innings out of him. That's just the way the rotation has been handled lately. And I get it ... the pen has been superb.

It likely won't matter if they can't solve Quintana. I don't know how a guy can look so mediocre against every other team, but turn into Randy Johnson against the Brewers. They've slapped some other lefties around the last couple weeks, though, so hopefully that continues against Quintana. If would be great to see Yelich continue his tear tomorrow.

Cold weather game with the wind blowing in from right field tomorrow it seems?

If that is the case, I'm good with starting Anderson on a short short leash...

Biggest game since Game 5 against AZ years ago... Gosh I want this one real bad. What a ride to get here. These last few weeks have been incredible. Enjoy it all tomorrow friends!

and CC can't start Kotsay, so we have that going for us...

I just meant that the delta between our starters isn't big enough to fret over exactly which one gets the start. No matter who it is, they could be great. I don't know. The metrics will pick between the available options and then we do what we always do.

but it's not like every guy suddenly forgot every piece of advice he gave

I worry about the fact the Crew has won seven straight..That is never a good omen..I'm a HUGE believer in law of averages..Just don't have a good feeling about tomorrow, at all...I hope I'm wrong. Boy do I hope I'm wrong

Each game is independant from the one before. Different team, different stadium, hell, different line-up...lol

We can win tomorrow just the same as any other day!

Peralta just scares me in a moment like this. Guy with control issues likely to be hopped up on adrenaline. I don't know. Totally, as has been said, a high risk high reward guy.

If I were Maddon, I might lineup Murphy, Zobrist, Baez, Rizzo to prevent a Cedeno start. I would probably start Xavier if I knew it was going to be Murphy, Zobrist, Rizzo.

I am going to try to enjoy this one because a Tuesday game will be no fun at all. Just a ball of nerves.

I would not be starting Peralta in this game. Lefties are .252/.376/.489/.864 against him and the Cubs can throw a whole bunch of left-handed bats in the lineup. Righties are OPS'ing a pitiful .396 off of Peralta. An ideal situation for a one-game playoff (which this is not) would be to use Hader as an opener, and then follow him with Peralta if the opposing manager stacked his lineup with righty hitters in a poor attempt to counter Hader being on the mound. That's kind of been my hope for a wild-card game. But this is not an elimination game and the Cubs aren't the team to do this with IMO.

Unfortunately, the two Brewer starters that have had the most success against current Cub hitters started the last two games:

Miley = .222/.276/.333/.609

Gonzalez = .206/.296/.317/.613

These are the current Cubs slash line against the most likely candidates:

Guerra = .221/.331/.317/.648 in 104 at-bats...Javier Baez is .364/.364/.636/1.000 in 11 at-bats

Davies = .242/.303/.391/.694 in 215 at-bats...Kris Bryant is .371/.405/.657/1.053 in 35 at-bats

Anderson = .224/.291/.436/.728 in 165 at-bats...Wilson Contreras is .500/.533/.750/1.283 in 12 at-bats

Chacin = .242/.322/.409/.731 in 132 at-bats...Daniel Murphy is .400/.435/.750/1.185 in 20 at-bats

According to ESPN, current Cub hitters only have 5 at-bats against Peralta. 2 hits with 1 being a double in those 5 at-bats. Maybe Counsell could throw him out there since Cub hitters haven't seen that much of him, but I wouldn't do it considering how major league lefties have hit him this year.

Looking at the numbers and I'm surprised that Counsell threw Guerra two innings today. Not sure that 27 pitches would eliminate the possibility of him pitching on Monday.

I'd just make the safe guess and think it would be Chacin since he's been the most consistent of the starters throughout the year.

Last time he was undoubtedly hopped up on adrenaline (his MLB debut) went pretty well :)

LETS GOOOOOO!

Going to be tough to sleep tonight with the excitement to commence in 14 hours ...

I’m good with a pen day. Ride the hot hand. Whatever CC says likely will work. He’s been money this last month. I had my doubts through the year but he’s really made some fantastic decisions down the stretch.
