Ray Montgomery might be in play for GM jobs this year

Better not lose both

Who is the other? Matt Arnold?

As much as I would want Montgomery to stay, I would have to think he's a hot candidate and deserves an opportunity to be a GM.

Matt Arnold I think is the top candidate but Brewers have 3 great ones under Stearns. Arnold was getting looks as GM even for the Brewer job before signing on as Assistant GM here. Really Stearns, Montgomery, & Arnold I believe (don’t quote me) were the top 3 choices at the end. Don’t sleep on Zach Minasian at all getting interviews. Baseball family, has skyrocketed his way up & done fantastic job.

If I was an owner of another franchise I'd absolutely be looking at bringing in people from the Brewers' front office. The turnaround that the Brewers have made under Stearns has been nothing short of phenomenal.

At some point, the Brewers are likely to convert to the President of Baseball Operations/General Manager setup that quite a few organizations now have to keep top talent in-house (the Cubs with Epstein/Hoyer and the Twins with Falvey/Levine are first ones that come to mind). Still, it is likely the Brewers will lose a few of their top guys to other teams in the near future. Montgomery, Arnold, Minasian, Shawn Hoffman, and Dan Turkenkopf among them. It's the price of success.

I've always wondered about this sort of thing, but what's to stop Attanasio from just opening up his wallet and throwing a boatload of money at these guys to keep them here? There aren't any salary cap rules for front office folks, right?

I have no idea what these guys make, but it seems to me that if you have a top-notch staff, you'd want to keep them together any way you can. Even doubling their salaries seems like it would wind up being inconsequential down the road in comparison to what they provide to the success of the team.

The money only goes so far, though. Especially with the younger guys, they are motivated to have control of their own teams.

Rumors are the Mets were looking at Doug Melvin, so he could go too for whatever that's worth.

Kind of forget that DM & Gord Ash are still in front office roles..... are front office rather loaded

LOL, that would be so ironic considering how things with down between him and Alderson with the botched Gomez trade.

Melvin takes over the Mets, and immediately trades Wheeler and Flores to the Brewers for "past considerations".

It makes perfect sense that other teams are going to start poaching Brewers' front office personnel for their GM vacancies. This team has perfected the idea of the "rebuild".

I think the Astros would disagree. As good as the Brewers are, the core they have is absolutely incredible and should be around for several years and may contain a few young HOF'ers.

I'm certainly not taking credit away from Stearns, but Yelich is as much a credit to Stearns as it is a black mark on Jeter's personal moves. Aguilar was a great hit, but he was one of the many guys we were just taking a shot at(an idea I wholeheartedly embrace by the way, the 20 moves that didn't work out were more than worth it for a middle of the order bat under control for several years).

But lets wait and see if we can develop and or use our system to trade for talent like Correa, Altuve, Springer, Cole, Verlander, Bergman and several others.

The Cubs have given away some of the best young talent in the game for a good, not great young lefty in Quintana and 3 months of Chapman or I'd place them in that same group with the Astro's.

Either way, point is, it's a bit early to say we've perfected rebuilding. For all the success, Stearns really hasn't gotten that much out of his draft picks just yet, much less his international signings.

Sure but a lot of owners have no desire for a long, drawn out rebuild. A quick turnaround like done in Milwaukee gets every owners attention more so than 3 straight 100 loss seasons. What Stearns pulled off is every pro sports owners wet dream when they clean house and bring in someone new.

Unlike most teams that finally decide to rebuild, the Brewers had some very valuable pieces they were able to cash in on. Trading Gomez, Lucroy, Parra, and Jeffress pretty much set everything up. Gomez and Lucroy both being young, affordable, and cheap led to much greater returns than most teams get during a tear down since they weren't high-priced, old, fading talent.

I didn't know that Melvin wanted to be a GM again...

Apparently he does:

Hiring Doug Melvin is not a "we're rebuilding" move. It's a "we're going to try to fill our holes and go for it in the next two years" move. There's no way any of those pitchers are going to be moved this offseason, unless it's for a major haul to fill several offensive holes on the major league squad.

Doug did a pretty good job of getting the rebuild started here, when he was allowed to. I don't think it matters who the Mets hire, rebuilding will not be an option. I don't think just regular building is really an option either, though.
