2018-09-24: Brewers (Bullpen) at Cardinals (Flaherty) 7:15 PM CDT [Brewers win, 6-4 -- Lots of drama & a clutch W!]

Eye Black
Does anyone change their stance if Peralta goes 1 or 2 more scoreless innings? If Peralta comes out here, I agree it's weird to keep him in for Carpenter and then take him out a batter later, but if he pitches another inning, I definitely understand the move.

If you didn't trust Peralta to face Carpenter to lead off the game, why would you trust him to face him in the third with a runner on?

This whole thing just feels like over-think.

I at least understood what CC was trying to do initially. But then he had to think on his feet, and failed.

He should have stuck with the original plan (or what everyone thought was the original plan) and not allowed Carp to see a righty all game.

Ok, it's beating a dead horse, but damn...

This really feels like there were a handful of you just waiting in the wings ready to jump in with the criticisms the second something bad happened. Which is sad.

Not trying to pick on TBBC, but let's keep this IGT from derailing into argue-land. We've got a tense game here & we're all pulling for the same team!

Ok folks, time to move on back to the game please.

I mean, hell, if the strategy was to make Carpenter face lefties, then make him face a lefty.

I wouldn't be surprised if strategy was adjusted because Peralta was locked in for a few hitters. Probably PH him when his spot comes due again.

Ok, but why not go with what worked his fisrt time at the plate. Just makes no sense. Carp is probably laughing his rear off, as is the rest of Cardinal nation.

It's always something.

That fastball by Peralta gets creamed by literally everyone in the Cards lineup except maybe the pitcher. He made a mistake and got hit, y'all are making way too much of this decision from CC. I generally thought it was a good decision to stick with a pitcher throwing well...he made a mistake, it happens.

I think there's a good chance the plan changed when they got the lead, it looked like Peralta was dealing, and they had a chance to save some of the the bullpen for the rest of the series. No reason to be stubborn if a better option forms as the game proceeds.

Peralta has been buried at the bottom of the bullpen since August. You come up with this whole analytically based plan tonight and the guy who has been buried at the bottom of the pen suddenly becomes a better option based on looking good for one inning?

If you are doing a bullpen game, you do a bullpen game. Not a Freddy Peralta start disguised as a bullpen game because you tossed your disposable lefty in there for the first hitter. Counsell has had some great games playing matchups this year. This one was a miss though.

Because it had nothing to do with not trusting Peralta to face Carpenter. Very simply, if you're going Johnny Wholestaff, why not use a lefty to face the opponents best LH hitter to start the game. And the reason the choice was Jennings is because he's the one you don't mind burning on one hitter.

It's not hard to figure out. They don't have 5 lefties in the pen to face Carpenter every AB.

Use one when he is up with a guy on though, as opposed to no one on base.

This is exactly what it boils down to. The ONLY reason Jennings started was to try and prevent Carpenter from beating you. He started solely because you didn't want a righty to face Carpenter but then you allow a righty to face him with a runner on. Makes zero sense.

Exactly! Instead we have him face a righty with a runner on.

Actually, I was on baord, especially after it worked on Carp's first at bat. I was thinking this is great!

It just seems there is always a new way that things go wrong, when they shouldn't.

CC had it going on, then BLAMO, not so much.
