On the 15th of August they sent him away from the team to get an MRI. On the 17th,18th and 19th of August he was out because of the shoulder injury. On the 29th he was hit in the shoulder and the face, on the 30th he was out to get stitches. It is a really hard sell to not think that most of this was about injuries.

Coming into tonight Piña had an 11 point OPS+ edge on Kratz.

In 430 innings with Kratz behind the dish our pitchers have a 3.47 ERA compared to 4.03 in 715 innings with Piña catching.

Chacin is a big driver behind this, 3.25 ERA in 102 innings with Kratz compared to a 4.39 ERA in 65 innings with Piña.

Miley has also pitched almost exclusively to Kratz since he came back from the DL.

If our best pitchers want to throw to Kratz (& what has happened seems to indicate they do) that is AOK with me.

And another possible explanation. I'd like to know the answer. Also the OPS stuff is small sample, Pina has last year under his belt. Did awful first half, no doubt about htat and it's killing that stat. But he's done so much better since mid season, at least close to last year

Now we don’t have to ask CC.

"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

Thames must feel like he hasn't had a hit in a month

Gotta love the guy, but there is no way he makes the play-off roster at this rate.

Unless the Reds somehow rally and make the playoffs.

Good research. Thanks.

Well done.

Let's just keep winning.

Yep ... this extra scoreboard watching is fun, but if they finish the season strong, they'll likely take the division. 1.5 games back is not much. The White Sox always seem to play the Cubs tough, too.

That final Cubs/Cards series looms huge right now.

Great throw by Kratz from his knees, just perfect.

To the 5-11 Pirates chat a couple pages ago. something lost in that convo is that 5 of those games were at the end of our ridiculouss 23 games in 22 stretch or whatever it was. Just go 2-3 in that 5 gamer like would be normal variance and you're at 7-9. This 5-11 is massively skewed by that situation where our pen was roasted.

Skewed or not it still the record and that what counts

In the case of a small sample and predicting the future the context counts way more than the actual record, so yes it is important to note. I do not believe we have really struggled against the Pirates this season. They happened to catch the team at its low point for 2 series. Those two things are very different.
