Stephen Drew

BA is reporting that Arizona may soon lose the rights to Drew as he is considering enrolling for classes at Florida State. Sounds like a move to press Arizona into his demands, but this is a pretty sad situation. Good news is Arizona is in line for B.J. Upton's brother in next year's draft, I think.

BJ Upton's brother....or Drew again. He'd go back into the draft, and since the D-backs currently have to No. 1 pick, they could take Drew again.

Why anyone would want Boras as their agent is beyond me. Nobody likes dealing with the guy, and I'd even say that the past few years have shown a definate anti-Boras approach by many teams in regards to draft picks (i.e. Drew and Weaver both dropping way lower than they should have).

Boras is the big reason I FEAR our negotations with Kolb this off-season. They're gonna want to break the bank, something the Brewers don't have a great track record with in the past.

Apparently, Stephen enjoys holding out as much as his brother JD did.

Drew's talent is undeniable, but like I said before the draft, I wouldn't touch Drew with a 10' pole, and I stand by that. What he's doing to the D-Backs speaks for itself.

I hope the same thing happens to him next year, and I'm happy to see that more teams aren't giving in to his insane bonus/contract demands.

"I think it's very sad that the Drews don't understand the value of time, however."

true, true word Al.

Maybe it was you or someone else with the same idea, but I nowr realise how stupid it is to delay entry onto the 'path to free agency'.

These guys must be incredibly stupid on both ends. They can set themselves up for life NOW and they can get the pot of gold ASAP (when free agency hits). But they choose neither. How can someone like Boras convince their clients to be so incredibly stupid?

Actually, can anyone give any examples of holdouts that ended up with nothing. I wonder if they sued their agent. Oh, I would like to see Boras sued for bad adivce. It would be great.

While I don't necessarily disagree with this notion, there is no guarantee that lil' Drew will ever get to see that big FA contract deal. I often read about football players, notably Robert Ferguson & Mike Wahle of the Packers the past couple of years, talk about how they're young, sign relatively modest multi-year deals now instead of waiting a year to test the FA market knowing/hoping that it isn't the biggest deal they'll ever sign. Of course football doesn't have a minor league system, so the chances for a recently drafted player are significantly decreased, and we've all seen the biggest prospects out there turn into nothing more than a memory. So, part of me can understand the idea of getting the most money now that you can since the odds are against you, no matter how talented you are.

Plus, while the signing delay may delay free agency by a year (or more), Boras also loves working the arbitration process year-by-year to make sure his clients the most they can. No hometown discounts for him!

But, in principle, I do agree 100%. No one signs thinking that they won't make it & be successful. Plus, isn't there a drive in this young man just to be on the field & playing baseball? And again, he claims it's not about the money.

Especially considering their rather lengthy injury histories.

His claim that it isn't about money is laughable. If it isn't about money then what else could it possibly be?

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) -- Top Arizona draft pick Stephen Drew decided Tuesday to withdraw from classes at Florida State and continue contract negotiations with the Diamondbacks.

Drew, who was selected with the 15th pick in June's amateur draft, signed up for classes last week but wasn't scheduled to attend until Tuesday. The Diamondbacks would have lost their rights to Drew if he attended a class before agreeing to a contract.

``Stephen Drew and his family feel the two sides can agree on a deal that satisfies both parties,'' Florida State coach Mike Martin said. ``Our hope is always for our young men to be happy, and I do sincerely feel that Stephen Drew will be happy.''

As long as Drew doesn't turn pro by signing a deal with an agent (techinically, Scott Boras is only his advisor until he does so), Drew can re-enter school for the spring semester & be eligible to play for the Seminoles.

From the BA story:

If Drew does not reach an agreement with the Diamondbacks this fall, he could re-enter Florida State for the spring semester and be eligible to play his senior season.

***After thinking about it for an hour (or two) I think Boras handled Bobby Brownlie the exact same way a few years back. I believe Brownlie threatened to go back to school, withdrew from classes in the fall, and when the spring semester rolled around he announced that he would be turning pro, making him eligible to play for an independent team in the spring, yet making him ineligible to play college ball. I think the Cubs ended up giving Brownlie just about what they started with, or at least ended with the summer before as far as negotiations are concerned, the following February, which was in the $2.5 million range.

I bet we see something similar with Drew. He withdrew from classes, but hasn't announced that he's turning pro, meaning he can continue to negotiate with the D-Backs leaving the college or even Independent option still open for the spring. The D-Backs offer is extremely generous, even if it is reportedly lower than what Rickie Weeks got last year, and both Drew & Boras would be foolish to turn it down.

If I were the D-Backs, I stand pat, call their bluff, and let Drew & co. sweat it out, if Boras even has sweat glands.

Here's the latest on Drew. It doesn't appear to look good.

From Rotoworld.

Quote:
Talks have stalled between the Diamondbacks and first-round pick (No. 15 overall) Stephen Drew. "We knew this was going to be a headache," Mike Rizzo, Diamondbacks director of scouting said. "I knew it was going to be a lot of work. I could have taken the easy way out and signed a guy the day we drafted him." If the D'Backs are having this much trouble with the No. 15 pick, just wait until they pick first overall in 2005.

Do negotiations with a Boras client ever look good until that player is actually signed?

I don't buy that. You have to keep the negotiations in context. As noted time & time again, they're dealing with Scott Boras here. According to the reports, the D-Backs have offered Drew a more than fair deal, and like all Boras clients, Drew is making the D-Backs sweat it out in hopes of making more money. Bobby Brownlie did the same thing a couple of years ago before eventually signing before spring training. Drew will threaten to go back to school in the spring, then turn pro, and I bet he will eventually sign, probably for about what he's being offered now, because if he thinks for one second that he will make more than what the D-Backs have offered him he's crazy.

And if he doesn't sign, the D-Backs can take that money & roll it into the first overall pick for 2005. I have read that the D-Backs prefer college players, but I doubt they would let that preference cloud their judgement with Justin Upton available, unless of course money does play into their decision as it did this past year with the Padres and in '02 with the Pirates.
