Unofficial 2018 NFL season thread

I think Kareem Hunt will get a second chance. He's young and has talent.

I would agree if it weren’t for the tape.

He did that much damage with his friends restraining him. What would he have done without them there?

Ray Rice knocked his fiancé in a confined space in the elevator. This woman in the Kareem Hunt video came after Hunt. Hunt pushed the man away which knocked the woman into the wall. The kick at the end was what looked the worst. The woman was kicked out of Hunts hotel room, and she apparently wouldn't go away. The police didn't think there was enough evidence to even charge Hunt. He's too young and too talented for a team not to take a chance on him. I don't condone what he did, but I don't think it was as bad a Ray Rice.

Ultimately why? I can see for a case where it's he said she said, like what the badgers cephus is going through, but in a situation where there is video of the incident, it's basically like a civil suit. The criminal case has no bearing on it. If the chiefs decide they don't want him on their team based on his actions that's their perogitve. If another team is ok with it and picks him up, then the same.

Also it doesn't sound like any criminal charges are going to be pursued and it's basically in the hands of the court of public opinion.

Remember what Yoda said:

"Cubs lead to Cardinals. Cardinals lead to dislike. Dislike leads to hate. Hate leads to constipation."

I wish the NFL would just ban a guy for life or do nothing in this situation. These couple game suspensions are pointless and only for PR sake. The interesting thing about Hunt is that if he isn't claimed he becomes a free agent and will certainly winding up making much more than his current rookie deal if anyone signs him, which they probably will. Basically, there is no real punishment and he comes out richer in the end.

How did the Falcons go from up 28-3 in the Super Bowl to this?

Honest question.

Their OC went to coach the 49'ers and I think took a lot of the offensive staff with him. I think a lot is they had an over achieving defense that year and Matt Ryan is one of those QB's who can get you pretty far when everything lines up perfectly like Eli Manning but is kind of a dud otherwise.

Watching this Bears D and wondering what the hell Ted Thompson was thinking when he took a guy like Jake Ryan. Bears so fast and athletic.

What the hell was Brian Gutekunst, Mark Murphy, and whoever else thinking when they didn't pay the price for Khalil Mack and dumped a load into Jimmy Graham instead?

Probably that giving up the bulk of your next two drafts for one player when you have more than one hole to fill is a bad idea when you didn't have the cap room this year to sign him to the deal that Chicago could.

Mack is the type of trade you make if you feel you're one player away, but I don't think anyone would claim that the Packers are in that position. The good news is that they have the capital to address multiple holes and depth in the draft and free agency this year and can likely reload fairly quickly if they do that correctly. If they had acquired Mack, they would have filled one hole with an all-pro caliber talent, but also eliminated much of their draft capital and half of their cap space, probably keeping 3-4 holes on the team and not building the depth they need on the o-line, etc.

I believe they offered the same thing the Bears did. Difference being, Oakland thought the Bears draft picks were going to be higher than the Packers picks.

Oops.

I'm not saying I even believe this, but one could argue that between the bears and packers, whoever's draft picks Oakland got, would be the worse set of picks either way.

Didn't Rice's wife hit him multiple times before he lost it and hit her? Again not condoning it either, but there was context there too. Main point though is there is video and he's a fairly big name so it's going to be tough for him. Joe Mixon got his chance though and so far has never gotten in any more trouble.

Another thing to note that is a quirk to it, Tyreek Hill for the Chiefs was kicked out of Ok St. for beating up his pregnant girlfriend. Pled guilty to it. He was a late round pick though so no one talked about like Mixon and of course there is no video. So he became a good story a year or two back when he started making those big plays, while no one knows about this. He of course is still on the Chiefs but Hunt is gone, because there is no video.

Well you should believe it because in a press conference when asked why the Bears offer was chosen over others, Reggie McKenzie came right out and said they went the offer they deemed likeliest to result in the highest 1st round pick.

Yea very fair to assume that Oak would still totally expect GB to finish higher than Chi even with Mack. Heck, all of us here did and every oddsmaker did. Packers still had Rodgers and the Bears basically a rookie QB who didn't look good last year.

Are the Vikings having a worse season than GB based on pre-season expectations? Boy their offense looks pathetic.

John DiFilippo, the Vikings OC, was a hot name as a potential future HC, and I saw him mentioned as a candidate for the Packers' job. I'm not sure anyone has done less with as much talent as the Vikings offense has this year.

Yep ... that Vikings offense, other than Cook missing a few games because of hamstring issues, has been intact injury-wise as well. Just goes to show how the flavor of the month in coaching can change quickly. The Vikings have been nearly as disappointing as the Packers, if not more so.

Probably not what the Vikings were expecting when they gave Kirk Cousins $84M guaranteed over 3 years. I'm the biggest "QB wins are not a stat" guy, but for simplicity's sake, his W/L record is:

Primetime games: 5-13

Vs winning teams: 4-24 (!!! WOW !!!)

Vs winning teams in '18: 0-5

Road record: 12-23-2

MNF: 0-7

Not only that, but of an estimated $190M cap for 2019, the Vikings presently have about $8.3M available in cap space. They'll certainly do some maneuvering since it's obvious they believe their window to be '18-20, but it's been quite awhile since they've been in cap trouble. Of course, that directly relates to the fact they haven't had to pay significant dollars to a QB for many, many years.

Considering the expectations of their fans I would say they are even more disappointing than the Pack. Their Oline has been terrible for years and it has been an Achilles heal again this year. A lot went their way last year not the least of which was the collapse of the Pack after the Rodgers injury.

I said in the other thread a Vikings collapse was the only realistic way for the Packers to get in the playoffs. That is something I can get behind, hate the Vikes and that would really upset their fans. I don't believe it will happen, I think the Packers lose at least one more, but a win over the Bears and a Vikings loss to the Dolphins would sure put us back in the race.
