David Wright to retire at final appearance on Sept. 29

The Mets' David Wright will be activated and play in one final game on September 29. Wright, who is 35, hasn't played in the Majors since May 27, 2016. He said that with all the injuries and surgeries he doesn't think he can play anymore.

A .296 career hitter, Wright had a chance to be a hall-of-famer until injuries derailed his career.

Nice that he can make one final appearance before the home fans.

Yeah it was too bad about the injuries. That guy was a stud in his hey day.

I wonder if this will be a Prince Fielder type situation where the Mets will have to keep him on the 40 man roster in 2019/2020 still even though he won't play again in order to collect insurance.

Yes, during the off-season, unless they make a deal with the insurance company like the Rangers did.

If hes retiring retiring i dont think they will have to. I know people were hoping was it supon or garza(or both) would retire so we wouldnt have to keep paying them.
Remember what Yoda said:

If Wright retires then he forfeits his 2019 and 2020 salaries which total 27 million dollars, unless the doctor(s) conclude that a particular injury is career ending. Gil Meche was the last player I can remember that just decided to retire and walk away from a big payday.

I can't imagine him forfeiting that money. But even if he does, that guy has made plenty of $. His family should be set up for generations.
