NL MVP Race

nate82

I can just see Baez having a huge weekend, a couple walk off hits/Hrs. Tons of RBIs, just enough to over shadow Yelich and all he has done the the second half.

I can see him getting the national spotlight as the Cubs are trying to seal the Central.

That would suck sooooo badly.

I think it may well come down to which team wins the NL Central.

Yelich has a better statistical case, but the Brewers taking NL Central crown would ice it. If the Cubs hang on, Baez potentially gets it over Yelich - especially with Cain potentially siphoning votes off.

My picks:

AL MVP: Khris Davis

NL MVP: Christian Yelich

I was going to ask in what way David would be even in the conversation with Trout, Martinez, Betts, Ramirez, and others...but then I saw who the poster was. My guess is scooter is your runner up for MVP in the NL?

Please explain the Davis pick.

I like Davis, and his home run numbers are cool, but he shouldn't win MVP of the A's this year, much less the American League. I would think he'd be no higher than third or fourth on his own team, and I think you'd pick Betts (or Trout, for that matter) over any two Oakland players added together this year.

Yelich has a legit case and lots of buzz but years of Brewer fandom have me worried that the Cub will win just because. There's a compelling narrative for Yelich, though, which seems to matter to some voters as much as the actual performance on the field. IMO Yelich and Cain should both be ahead of Baez, and one of them or DeGrom should win. I freely admit that I'm probably discounting Baez a bit because of his team, of course.

This might also be a year to fuel the pitcher-for-MVP debate. There should be several pitchers high in the NL vote, and it could be that a pitcher (DeGrom, presumably) actually wins for a change, but I have my doubts. Arenado and maybe Freddie Freeman should be up there too, as best players on contending teams, and DeGrom, Rendon, Nola, and Scherzer all suffer from their's team's performance.

How many Brewers will get at least one MVP vote this year? Could see six guys as candidates, including the big two plus Shaw, Aguilar, Hader, and Jeffress. They won't all get votes, but I bet four of them will.

um, because we discuss things here, you know, on a discussion board.

I am hoping I am 100% wrong, not really even predicting that will happen, just listing it as a possibility.

Thanks for your input though.

I hope to god you are 100% wrong man! That means, very likely, we at the very least are playing for the division on Monday!

If Yelich has a big series here too, he can over shadow Baez even more since he's the "hot hand". It'll be some fun to watch.

And how is it the Rockies always seem to finish at home with teams that are out of it.... every year... that belongs in the playoff discussion but just dawned on me how lucky they have been in recent memory. lol.

Maybe i should have put that in blue! I just meant why bring that kind of energy here! Baseball is a superstitious sport! I don't want anyone saying crazy things like that!

Fun fact!

If Khris Davis finishes the year 2 for 13 he will end up with a .247 BA for the fourth consecutive year. Wonder how often someone has had the same BA in four consecutive years?

This is going to be more fun to track than the division races!

I'm surprised nobody else here seems to think - or be worried about - the possibility that Lorenzo Cain could siphon enough points away in MVP voting to give the award to Baez over Yelich.

He has arguably the highest OBP in the league, provided great defense, and will be second in bWAR.

I don't worry about that because I don't think it has really ever happened before.

It is encouraging that all of the mlb channel guys say it is Yelich now. They sort of represent the "common man's" thoughts on things.

I would have to disagree here. I guess the guys on the network might think differently, but they had a graphic listing the Top 3 according to MLB.com writers weekly and not once was Baez #1. Before Yelich's push the general consensus was all Baez.

I do think Yelich is going to win it now though. He is the talk on the street even with us on pace to not win the division. Can't imagine anything can happen in three days to change that.

Khris Davis isn't even the best hitter on his team let alone player on his team, and he's the AL MVP? Can't believe I got a "timeout" over takes like this. :rolleyes :laughing
"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

My money would be on never

I bet there's been quite a few pitchers that might have done it, but beyond that I'm sure you are correct.

Remember what Yoda said:
