It's Yelich. No argument to be made for Baez, or anyone else, now.
There are three things America will be known for 2000 years from now when they study this civilization: the Constitution, jazz music and baseball. They're the three most beautifully designed things this culture has ever produced. Gerald Early

So a couple days ago it still felt like the national narrative was Baez for NL MVP.

After these first two games in STL it feels like the narrative has shifted to Yelich.

At this point, assuming deGrom and Scherzer are out of the discussion to win MVP, it has to be Yelich.

I agree, Yelich at this point, should win it. You have to remember, that the Cubs are the CUBS. They should have at least one player that garners attention and gets the stats. The fact Yelich is doing what he is doing. The numbers... the big hits... he is sure more valuable to this team than any other NL player I can think of. It helps he was traded for this year too, I believe. That adds to the narrative even more, showing that (besides Cain also of course) he was the difference maker from last year.... Baez is great and all, but, they are the Cubs, they were supposed to run away with the Central. I don't think we even NEED to win the division for Yelich to be the MVP at this point. This is with my Brewers goggles on AND off... its just what he has done has been what you crave from an MVP going down the stretch.

I still think the division race will matter to some voters. There are people who will vote for the player off the division champion if they are close. The Cubs popularity and gigantic fan base will sadly factor in as well. I think Yelich deserves it, but it's far from a lock that he will get it.

How does Yelich have a negative Def WAR? I know his arm is brutal, but throwing is honestly a pretty small part of playing the outfield. I would have thought his range/speed would have made up for the bad arm.

on bb-ref, dWAR (and oWAR) both include the positional adjustment. That is why you can't just add them together for total WAR. If you just want his defensives runs saved vs average look at Rfield. Yelich is at 2. At Fangrpahs the DEF runs above average also includes the positional adjustment, and they use UZR for the runs saved. They have him at a few runs above average fielding and a few runs below average on arm, so again they have him as a league average OF and then he takes a hit for the corner OF positional adj.

The "clutch" stat on that chart tells you most of what you need to know I think. Yelich has delivered in needed situations time and time again this year. Over a .400 difference in OPS with 2 out, RISP from Baez. If those numbers on the chart are accurate.. this MVP race isn't close at all.

When is the moment you realized... we might have us a special player here? I mean this year.....

For me, it's when he took the lefty in Minnesota, the opposite way for a home run at Target Field to give us the lead in the Saturday game i think it was...... I got that "feeling" and since then he's been amazing.

I have been on the bandwagon from the start. I didnt know he would be this special though. I felt like in the first half he was just about ready to breakout. His at bats were almost always great. Even if he didnt get a hit he worked the count and made solid contact. Honestly I feel like the home run at the All-star game was big for him. The biggest moment for me is when the Brewers played the Nationals in late July and Bryce Harper who was struggling came over to Yelich to rub him for good luck. I figured if one of the best hitters in the game was recognizing the talent of Yelich he was even better than I thought.

I knew when they acquired him they god a very good player. The first half really played out similar to his career numbers. The second half is more than I think anyone could have reasonably expected.

My favorite Yelich moment of the season was when he and Braun went back to back to walk off the Cardinals. My favorite game of the whole season (so far).

As of this morning, Yelich has caught Cain in bWAR for position players (both at 7.0) at the top of the NL leaderboard. Baez is a distant third at 6.2. This almost assures that the Brewers will have the top 2 bWAR position players in their league for the first time (Yount and Molitor were first and third in 1982). They have only had 4 different position players achieve a bWAR of 7.0 or greater for a season. Yount did it 3 times (1980, 1982, and 1983). The others were Gomez in 2013, Braun in 2011, and Tommy Harper in 1970.
