The forecast tomorrow in DC looks awful. With only a couple weeks left, I hope that MLB reschedules the game Thursday, forcing the Cubs to fly out after a Wednesday night game in Chicago and then fly back for a Friday day game. However, I’m concerned that they may not reschedule and just require the teams to play on 10/1 only if the game could impact the Cubs playoff position

I was thinking of that, however based on the standings there's also a reasonable chance of needing an extra game to decide who wins the division if it winds up tied, with the loser playing in the 10/2 wild card game. Particularly with the Cards still having a remote chance at winning the division. I would hope MLB realizes that and opts to force the makeup game (it tomorrow is rained out) to occur during a mutual off day. Neither options are good scenarios, but there are enough NL teams in contention for various division/wild card spots that I would think MLB wants to keep that 10/1 day open as long as possible for game 163's rather than push a game 162 into October when they have the earlier option of this Thursday.

The only open date for the Nationals is next Thursday it is that date or a 10/1 game if the game gets rained out tomorrow. There are no other open dates for the Cubs and the Nationals to play on other than those two dates.

There’s so much whining on Cubs Twitter about this rain delay.

If Wilson hadn't served up a meatball to Harper, they'd be just fine with it. Plus, they even got another at bat to try and even the game up before the game was delayed.

Apparently there was a ceremony honoring Jayson Werth between the two games that went longer than expected. This was in the Nationals “bag of tricks” to screw with the Cubs. So much angst and saltiness over that (and asking if the game can be suspended until tomorrow and not declared final) on Cubs Twitter.

Forgive my ignorance, but is there any choice to be made with regard to making the Cubs/Nats game official? Been scanning through the rule book, as I was under the impression that since they have completed this much of the game it would become official unless play restarts tonight still.

"That ain't Chuckie's game. Chuckie hacks on 2-0."

Yes, it is a Nationals win if they don't resume play.

This is an interesting dichotomy. Maddon is essentially doing the anti-Counsell in that he is using his primary relief pitchers as often as possible but using them for shorter stints. It seems that the Cubs pen is the one that is wearing down. One of you numbers guys can verify that but that seems to be what is happening.

Regardless of how it gets managed, when you basically have to play everyday for a month straight due to early season rainouts your pen is going to suffer at the end of it. That's what the Cubs are dealing with now. Not getting Morrow back really has gassed the group of arms the Cubs rely on to lock down games. They've been able to slug their way to a few wins and get some solid starting pitching overall during this stretch, otherwise the division race would already be a toss-up between the Cubs and Brewers at this point.

Just not having a day off where a team doesn't have to even show up to the park and think about picking up a baseball makes a huge difference.

I'm sure the Cubs will have another one of those inexplicable "sunburn rainout" phenomenons on Monday and the bullpen will be nice and refreshed for us.
