Down goes Kopech - To have Tommy John Surgery

JohnBriggs12
Over the last several weeks, optimism had surfaced on the south side of Chicago for the White Sox. They had started playing better and the guy thought to be their future ace, Michael Kopech was called up. It was announced about an hour ago he needs Tommy John surgery and will miss all of 2019. Tough blow for the Sox. Looks like another season where Sox might act as de facto bullpen talent supplier for the Brewers stretch run.

Man, that stinks. Hate to see guys like that get TJ. At least he's young.

In the SI story about him a couple years ago all he talked about what how hard he wanted to throw. Unfortunately that is pretty much the only thing young pitchers work on anymore. So you end up with guys like him that strikeout 10 per 9, while walking 5 per 9, and having TJ before they can legally drink.

So from what I have read, him being up these few games this year means his recovery year will count against his service time. Double ouch.

This is true. If he's placed on the MLB DL, that counts towards his service time. His cheapest years of team control will now be spent rehabbing from an injury.
