There is a hitting theory out there that it's best to avoid a pitcher's "out" pitch and that pitcher's are taking advantage of hitter patience by throwing more strikes early in the count.
"Dustin Pedroia doesn't have the strength or bat speed to hit major-league pitching consistently, and he has no power......He probably has a future as a backup infielder if he can stop rolling over to third base and shortstop." Keith Law, 2006

Interesting because I've also seen that pitchers are throwing less strikes and getting more swings out of the zone than every before. In fact, and don't quote me on this, I thought I saw that Patrick Corbin is having a career season in spite of throwing only something along the lines of 30% of his pitches in the strike zone.

Yeah I don't know if anyone has come out and said "I'm swinging earlier in the count because...". It's just a theory as to why some guys are swinging earlier in the count. I'd be curious what Corbins 1st pitch K% is vs the other pitches in the count.

It makes sense. For years batters were taking pitches just to take pitches, so pitchers decided to throw more over the plate. Now batters are taking advantage of that. Now making a starter throw lots of pitches to get to the bullpen isn't as smart since most relievers have better stuff than most starters. Simply the ebb and flow of baseball.
