2018-09-05: Cubs (Quintana) at Brewers (Chacín) 7:10 PM CDT [Brewers lose, 6-4]

Eye Black
I agree that with a lefty pitching and an off day he should be out there. While he did have one or two bad ABs yesterday, he still had a hit and has generally been doing just fine of late. Have an off day tomorrow and you can plan Saturday off when there is a righty pitcher.

Wasn't part of the idea behind giving Braun days off throughout the season so that he could be healthy (and rested) for the stretch run? He needs to be in the lineup today IMO. With the scheduled off days every week, unless someone is hurt, there's no reason for days off. We need the best players out there as much as possible.

Yep. And you would think this would be Braun's mindset. It could very well be his last shot for a playoff birth.

"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

Braun has sat frequently during the season the day before an off day, but sitting today wouldn’t make too much sense to me. There are 22 games left and the game today is the difference between 2 back or 4 back. That big of a swing is truly a make or break on the rest of the season. It has to be all hands on deck at some point and this game needs to be the start of it. This is a HUGE game.

Right. Braun/Aguilar basically have a week to play most days with an off day tomorrow and at the end of this stretch of LHP. Including today, there are 5 lefties in the next 7 games. After that, a ton of RHP. So Braun and Aguilar should play most of those and then might honestly start 50-60% of the games down the stretch.

I think you might be underestimating how much they play down the stretch. If Thames wasn't in a funk, that might be closer to true. I can't see Granderson starting more than 1-2 games a week. Santana and Broxton will virtually never start. I'll be furious if Perez starts in the outfield in September. Not many other options.

Shaw will get a little 1B, Thames will play a bit, etc. I may have meant 70% when I think about it, but they will work the lefties as well as Schoop in a bit down the stretch.

I think Moose gets a start tonight. He's faced Quintana a lot in his career and has been pretty good against him. I'm guessing Arcia sits and CC goes with Perez and Schoop in the middle infield.

Braun got a hit yesterday, but otherwise he's been missing a lot of hittable pitches lately. I wouldn't be opposed to giving Santana or Broxton a start. I'm sure it will be Braun, though, due to his HRs off Quintana the last time they faced off.

I think Arcia has to start for the defense. Chacin and Miley both induce a lot of ground balls, we'll want the defense.

Moose is hitting .167 against Quintana lifetime.(4 for 24) I don't think that's pretty good at all.

Fantastic atmosphere there last night being at the game, Cubs fans were not happy. Definitely a higher percentage of Brewers fans last night compared to game 1. I was right in the center of the Let’s Go Brewers and Yelich MVP chants and glad to hear they were audible on TV. Some of their fans even the old ones still yell PEDs when Braun bats and all it takes is saying Sammy Sosa’s name to them to shut them up lol

The cubs pitching seems to be in a complete state of meltdown.quote]

Prior to yesterday: 4, 1, 1, 2, 4, 10*, 1, 4, 0, 6, 2, 1, 2, 2, 2, 3, 0, 0, 4, 7, 3, 9, 2, 9, 0, 1

Man, I hope our pitching has a similar meltdown! That is not bad at all. Mind you this does not take into consideration errors. I am just pulling what they gave up.

*was second game of a DH.

I was more so referring to the last two games and their bullpen overall... unless they have a bunch of secret relievers with great stuff, the De La Rosa's and Cishek's of the world don't inspire fear during a playoff game against experienced hitters. I just hadn't realized they were that short of shut down types like our bullpen.

Fake news. Moustakas is 12-43 against Q for his career, with an .899 OPS.

Before the series I thought it was a must-sweep for keeping divisional hopes alive and I still think tonight is realistically their best remaining chance to put real pressure on the Cubs. The Cubs are still at 84% odds of winning the division. I know they play next week but 4 GB with 21 to play is a lot of ground to make up and it would be a real shame to only gain 1 game this series with how much momentum the Brewers have right now. How great would the Cubs feel if they get out of Miller Park still up 4 games with how awful they played the last 2 games?

This is definitely a must sweep. I've been saying this for a while that we need to sweep series' at this point and that 2 out of 3 doesn't really do much good. I don't think some people realize this. If we don't take care of business ourselves, who will?

NO Yelich in the biggest game of the year to date? and Perez in the 2 hole? oiy CC what are you thinking today!!!

I'm much much less upset about Yelich getting the day off as I am about Perez in RF over Santana/Broxton/really anybody...and batting 2nd. Maybe he's putting him there to set himself up better for late game maneuvering? I'm grasping at straws here...this makes less sense than starting Tommy Lastella at 3b today over Bryant as some cubs fan suggested.

Be prepared to be furious. Cc had to find a way to get Perez in- plus he’s batting 2nd. at least Yelich got an off day he’s been struggling and wouldn’t have one tomorrow anyway. It’s only the team they’re trying to catch in the standings

I agree, Perez is a mind-boggling decision. I was more so just upset, not seeing Yelich in the lineup just gives me the feeling of "this game doesnt matter" when as a fan, TONIGHT MATTERS!!

Unless a he had a minor injury happen I guess I'm in the camp that maybe Yelich could've taken Friday off instead if he needs a day. Guys been on fire. Having said that, Perez will hit a ding dong in the 1st inning.

Let's hope Rizzo is out for them as well.

He's probably thinking that Perez has had much more success than Yelich against Quintana, but yes, I think you have to make an exception this time. Nobody is playing better ball than Yelich right now. We'll most likely see him pinch hitting or even replacing Perez at some point.

Definitely NOT a must sweep. If they lose, they are 4 back with most of September left to play- including 3 more against the Cubs. Sweep puts them 2 games back, obviously that would be big but not a must.

We've consistently been about four or five games back of the Cubs for a month and a half now. I don't know why you would think we could make that up in three and a half weeks all of the sudden.

Perez is a career like 610 ops guy against Quintana. If you want to sit Yelich fine...throw Broxton in and go primo OF defense. Or put Santana in and give him a few at bats...Santana is a better hitter.
