Rodriguez Homers in 6-3 Season Finale Loss at Buies Creek

Carolina allowed three Buies Creek home runs in Monday's season finale

Nathan Rodriguez hit a three run home run in the first inning to stake the Mudcats to the lead but that was all they could manage. Meanwhile, Alec Bettinger gave up three gopher balls and all six runs to the Astros. Cooper Hummel was put in the lead off spot, presumably to help him get to the .400 mark in OBA. It didn't work. He was 1-4 and finishes with .397. I'm not sure if it was Cooper's idea or the Brewers' to put him in the outfield this year but, to me, his ticket to the big leagues is as a backup catcher. His bat will play there. His around .800 OPS is probably not good enough for a corner outfield bat.

Nathan Rodriguez: 1-3, HR, 3 RBI

Alec Bettinger: 5 IP, 7 H, 6 R, 2 BB, 4 K

Nathan Kirby: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 3 BB, 0 K

Cody Beckman: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K

Carolina Game Log

Carolina finishes 65-73. Not too bad for the lack of prospecty type players this year.

Biloxi Box Score

Despite losing on Monday, Biloxi clinched the 2nd half title for the Southern League South division - thanks to a Pensacola lose.

By winning both halves of the regular season, four of the five games in the next series will be played in Biloxi if needed.

In Monday's seasons finale, the Shuckers had their chances, but went 1-13 with runners in scoring position, leaving 12 on base. Weston Wilson led the way with three hits, while Corey Ray and Keston Hiura added two each.

Conor Haber left the team in a big hole early as he was clobbered for eight hits and six runs in less than three innings. On the bright side, Miguel Sanchez was outstanding, striking out five batters in just two innings of work. He didn't give up any hits or walks.

The Shuckers concluded the season with an 81-59 record.

Batting

Corey Ray: 2-4, BB

Keston Hiura: 2-4, BB, SB

Weston Wilson: 3-5, 2B

Pitching

Conor Harber: 2.2 IP, 8 hits, 6 ER, 1BB, 2K, Lose

Nattino Diplan: 3.1 IP, 2 hits, 0 ER, 3BB, 4K

Miguel Sanchez: 2.0 IP, 0 hits, 0 ER, 0BB, 5K

Cody Ponce: 1.0 IP, 0 hits, 0 ER, 0BB, 2K

Notes

The Brewer organization appear to be moving Cody Ponce into a relief role. Six of his last seven appearances have been for two or fewer innings.

Former Brewer farmhand Kodi Medeiros finished off the season on a sour note in today's game. Medeiros gave up three runs, three hits and walked five in 2.1 innings.

Biloxi Game Log

Shuckers got three in the 3rd, but it would not be enough to overcome the six run deficit.

Most likely Fresno I would think. Not ideal perhaps, but it beats having Colorado Springs as your AAA affiliate, where you can't really evaluate either hitters or pitchers. Colorado Springs as a short-season Rookie affiliate is much more tolerable.

Yah, it’ll probably be Fresno. One of the more neutral AAA parks, which is good. Not the sexiest place in the world for your top minor league team but it’s fine.

People have brought up having trouble getting players from Fresno to Milwaukee in case of an emergency, but that’s almost a complete non-factor.
