Daily bullpen unavailability

NYChez

Hope the bullpen is ready for a lot of work today. Gio and Guerra should each get a turn through the order.

Also, posted this in the game thread but it will get buried there:

Found what I was looking for:

On September 10th, 2016, Chacin pitched 2 innings in relief. He started a game and pitched 6 effective innings 4 days later.

On August 8th, 2009, Chacin pitched 2 innings in relief. He started a game and walked 6 guys in 2.2 innings (4 ER) 3 days later.

He has never made 2 starts in a 4-day period until today.

This isn't the perfect thread for it but it's indirectly related. I like what the Brewers did with their roster overall but this still makes me nervous.

I love that this is absolutely wrong. LOVE IT!

Why are we still doing this? We were wrong last series and probably will continue to be wrong. What makes us absolutely certain that Woodruff can't go 1 inning in the 11th tomorrow to preserve a tie before a day off, after throwing 27 pitches today? Completely different set of rules now than there was in the regular season.

I mean I understand during the regular season when there was generally specific rules that were followed but honestly this time of year, I think only the coaches, managers, and individual players know if a guy is truly going to be 'unavailable.' We have no idea how these specific guys are going to feel tomorrow.

Just my $.02.

Well, Counsell said Hader won't go tomorrow during his postgame, so I'd take him at his word. He'll be ready for Monday though.

I think Woodruff is probably the last man in the pen tomorrow, but he isn't off limits.

Gotta think Jeffress is unavailable tonight. I'll assume Hader is too although he only threw 8 pitches yesterday. Can Knebel go back to back?

I know he rarely throws in back to back games, but I would be surprised if Hader is unavailable tonight. I assumed that was the whole point of not letting him pitch the 9th last night.

Knebel only threw 19 pitches, and he's used to going on back-to-back nights, so I would think he's 100% good to go. Hader threw 8, so I'm sure he's available if needed as well. It might be for a LOOGY-type situation, though, rather than his typical multi-inning stint. I'm sure they are going to want to get through this game without going to Jeffress, but he only threw 21 pitches, too, so he will also be available if needed.

Like many have pointed out, it's the NLCS, so its all hands on deck. The only pitchers who are unavailable tonight are Chacin (obviously) and Miley (already named tomorrow's starter). The pen is in awesome shape for what looks like it might be a pen game tonight. I'm hoping Gio can give us more than two innings, though.

The only guy I would say is 100% unavailable is Chacin. Jeffress they probably try not to use...let him dwell on his success for a day. I doubt they'd go multiple innings with Knebel again. I'm guessing if GG and Woodruff can get us through 6 with a 2 run lead, it's probably Soria, Knebel, Hader in some order for the last 3 innings.

If Peralta doesn't pitch today, I'll be that much more convinced that he's purely a security blanket. The extra innings/blowout pitcher that we hope to never use.

I hope to use him. With a 12-0 lead.

Pretty sure JJ will be unavailable after throwing 3 out of 4 days, 11, 21 and 28 pitches.

If all goes well (not necessarily saying shutout, but just solid pitching and hitting), I could envision Gio for 3-4, Woodruff for 2-3, and Burnes for 2-3 and that's it. Maybe Hader for a batter, maybe Guerra for an inning.

Obviously, it's all dependent on things going our way. I feel like we're bound to have a normal 6-3 loss somewhere, but it hasn't happened yet.

I sorta see it being along the lines of hoping to get 5 innings combined from Gio and Woodruff and then assessing where you're at from there. Ideally you have Knebel, Hader, Soria, and Burnes to figure out a way to hold a lead for the final 4 innings.

I'd be ok with JJ getting a night off.

I hope at some point in the very near future this becomes an irrelevant topic. If we need someone we should use them, they are about to have 5 months off. CC himself was on a team that used Randy Johnson to pitch 7 innings in a start and then 1.1 IP in relief the very next day.

I agree with this 100%. There are 2 built in off days per 7 game series. Each win is worth it's weight in gold. Counsell should use his bullpen like there is no tomorrow, if he feels it's necessary.

I don't think it will be an issue in this series after tomorrow, as either a) we clinched or b) there's a day off. I think the only issue is during the three days in a row stretch.
