Soria has pitched .2 innings in the last 3 games, including the day off yesterday. Why would he be out?

Cedeno pitched 1 inning in each of the last two days, so I agree it is possible he may be out but I doubt it. He has pitched 3 days in a row in the past, has not pitched much this year, so Counsell won't hesitate to put him out there especially if he is just facing 1 batter.

As noted, the 33 pitches for Soria may make him unavailable. I personally think he will be available if needed but not the first choice in a tight game. Figure Jeffress/Hader/maybe Knebel in a close game with a lead and Barnes/Williams/Jennings if we have a 2-3 run deficit in late innings...GG or Lyles if we are getting creamed. I suspect GG is available to piggyback Davies if he falters early today.

It was nice to see Knebel looks generally sharp yesterday. Good FB command, blowing it by hitters.

It's more about pitches than innings. One reason why Hader went out for the 8th today was because he had only thrown 15 pitches combined between the 6th and 7th (obviously the other was because the top of the lineup was coming up, including Murphy and Rizzo).

I still think Hader is unavailable, along with Woodruff and Guerra. I also suspect we avoid using Knebel. In my opinion, prime relievers will likely be Jeffress and Soria...also jennings, cedeno, and williams if there's a short start...and also in the event of a 1-3 run deficit. I fully expect Hader and Knebel to be available Wednesday, assuming neither pitch tomorrow.

I'd add Burnes and Barnes, likely before Williams. For his career, Barnes has a .651 OPS-A against the Cubs. Can bet that Jennings and Cedeno will be facing lefties at some point. I think the order is Miley, Burnes, one of Jennings/Cedeno, Barnes, other of Jennings/Cedeno, Jeffress/Soria/Knebel.

But it's also the Cubs - it's all hands on deck.

I keep forgetting about burnes and I don't know why. He's right up there with jeffress and soria. Interesting note on barnes...

Sept. 4 - Definitely out: Hader, Woodruff, Guerra. Possibly out: Knebel.

Peralta can be added to Definitely out. With the Colorado Springs season over, I expect Freddy to be recalled, but he threw two innings yesterday.

Obviously it is very likely that Hader will not pitch, but if the Crew has a lead and the Cubs get a situation where there are are men on and 2 out and a lefty batter up... Would you ask him to pitch to 1 guy?

The thing is you need to warm him up before it gets to that scenario (and you don't know that the scenario is working out that way). So the pitcher gets two guys out, but two get on right away - Hader hasn't even started to warm up. So unless they throw over to first 10 times and have a couple of mound visits, it doesn't matter.

No to using Hader there. We have other lefties for that. Ideally Cedeno, not Jennings.

I think we found out the answer to this in the Nats series.

I tend to agree.

1) This is the Cubs, not the Nats.

2) Having won game 1 and having game 2 in your favor and in jeopardy with a possibility at the sweep that close...

I just think it is possible that Counsell asks for 6 pitches.

He shouldn't need to. If I had any confidence in Jennings, I wouldn't even mention the thought. But he might get be thinking at that moment that he wants to save Soria for an inning plus on Wednesday. "I just need this out and we are home free having won #1 & #2 and we are just 3 games back with Chacin going for us."

Sept. 7 - all hands on deck!, except possibly Burnes.

Burnes only tossed 23 pitches. I would think he would be available if needed Friday. With the depth in the pen, though, he may sit until the weekend.

I'm surprised they decided not to bring Houser back up. He showed good power stuff in his limited opportunities at the MLB level this year. What would it hurt to have him at the back of the pen for the stretch run?

Guessing Knebel unavailable after 1.1 innings two games in a row. Soria has pitched three games in a row; probably shouldn't be available. Cedeno probably available for one batter, maybe two.

Guessing the order tomorrow, if all goes well, is Miley, then a few R/L/R matchup switches (Williams/Jennings/Barnes), then Hader/Jeffress. If all doesn't go well, Woodruff in long relief.
