2018 Green Bay Packers Season Thread: 6-9-1: Mike McCarthy Fired, Philbin Interim HC

pacopete4
Gosh, I don’t know how people watch these hits and still let their kids play football.

Because kids dont tackle with their head down, they learn how to do that in the NFL for some reason.

I’m older than most NFL players and the concept of tackling with your head up was drilled into me, just like it has been for all these players. Bad things happen when two world class athletes run toward each other at full speed.

So, this is the end of the era, right? We have to be watching it unfold before our eyes.

I can’t put this particular loss on McCarthy ... not enough horses tonight.

I've never felt more confident in McCarthy being done. This is it. The era is over on NYE. This game may not be his fault, but he needed the playoffs for a chance at his job.

I feel that the odds really tipped against him tonight.

I get that perspective on the defensive side of the ball. But this offense is led by a healthy Rodgers in a must-win game against a divisional opponent. It has put up 14 points, and none in the second half. That should never happen—full stop.

Basically, the choice is that they can play another year of the 'will he be healthy this year' game and have him count $14.7 million against the cap, cut him in March and count $11.1 against the cap, or cut him post June 1 and have him count $3.7 million against it.

Sort of. If they cut him in March and designate it as a June 1st release it counts $3.7M against the 2019 cap but $7.4M against the 2020 cap, whereas if they release him in March it counts as $11.1M against the 2019 cap. There is no avoiding the $11.1M remaining on his signing bonus - it's just a matter of what year it's applied to.

If McCarthy is done than Thompson better be escorted out of the city himself. He is solely to blame for this team being where it is today. No depth at just about every single position on the field.

I've read numerous times now from reporters who know this stuff way better than I do, but what I've read is that the Packers gain space by releasing him this off-season.

It's a question of whether they want to keep him on the chance he's worth it if he doesn't get hurt.

I think they cut losses with him.

With no receivers and o lineman that shouldn’t be collecting a pro check.

Agree that Thompson is responsible for this. Funny, because it's exactly what he inherited and had to fix. Dead money in washed up players and no depth.

It truly has come full circle.

Its why you need to sense these things early in pro sports. Better to make a move too quick than too late when it comes to GMs and coaches. They've wasted so many years.

Was probably tough to take a 4-6 team out there in 2016 but they came a game within the Super Bowl. If Rodgers is sulking and missing throws because he thinks the team is bad that is diva level stuff and he should get over himself. Sit on the bench if you've quit. Not saying that's the case, but I don't buy it.

He's been flat a lot of this season and I think he's just playing bad football for his standards.

Agreed. I mean, what does a SB team look like to Rodgers? The year they won it they were a bunch of nobodies.

How Spriggs is on our roster still, amazes me. Ted Thompson should get his Packers HOF taken back for how terrible of a job he did late. What an absolute joke some of these players are.

With the pick the Packers traded to move up 8 spots to get Spriggs, the Bears took OG Cody Whitehair who has started every game of his 3-year NFL career. Nothing like doing your biggest rivals a solid.

Bears wanted Spriggs. They had the next pick and traded out after GB took him.

Really? They had a top 5 defense.

Hopefully they take an L next week and shut down Rodgers for the remainder of the year after that. Tank baby, tank! With the Saints being late 20’s at best, let’s get as high as we can. Three picks in the top 35-40 players would be awesome.
