Mudcats Washed Away 2-1 in Rain-Shortened Loss

Cooper Hummel went 2-for-2 with a RBI double and a walk in the rain-shortened loss

cut.jpg

Victor Diaz went the distance in this one, albeit that was only 4 innings due to the rain shortened nature of this game. Cooper Hummel doubled with two out in the 5th to get the Mudcats within one run but Dallas Carroll then popped out and the rain ended what was left of the game. Hummel had two hits and a walk in three plate appearances to raise his OBA to .398. When was the last time the Brewers had someone achieve .400 for that stat in A+? That is probably the only subject of interest left in this season.

Victor Diaz: 4 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 1 BB, 1 K

Joantgel Segovia: 1-3

Dillon Thomas: 1-3

Cooper Hummel: 2-2, 2B, BB

Shuckers Magic Number Remains At One Going Into Final Game Of The Regular Season

Biloxi Box Score

It was an uninspiring performance all around for Biloxi on Sunday. A 6-3 lose, coupled with a win by Pensacola, means the Shuckers magic number to clinch the second half South Division title remains at one with one game - with tomorrow's game the final of the regular season.

Biloxi managed three runs on six hits and five walks - but it wasn't enough as the Shuckers staff gave away too many free passes (eight, including five from Marcos Diplan) to go with eight hits. That just turned into too many runs.

The Shuckers close out the season on Monday afternoon. Biloxi is scheduled to face former Brewer farmhand Kodi Medeiros.

Batting

Keston Hiura: 2-4

Biloxi Game Log

After struggling most of the game, Biloxi made a run at things with a three-run 7th. Unfortunately, it would not be enough.

DODGERS FORCE SKY SOX TO MONDAY DIVISION DECISION

By Sky Sox PR

cut.jpeg

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. - The Sky Sox dropped two straight games to the Oklahoma City Dodgers Sunday, forcing a division decision on Labor Day Monday with a scheduled doubleheader. The Sky Sox are seeking just one win to clinch the American Northern division while the Dodgers will have to sweep the twin bill to claim the title. First pitch for game one is scheduled for 12:30 p.m. at Security Service Field.

Game One:

After three frames comprised of just four hits overall, Oklahoma City broke open first. In the top of the fourth, Edwin Rios struck a double to left field and, after a groundout, Travis Taijeron was hit by a pitch. Henry Ramos added a single to right field to plate the first run of the ballgame and take a 1-0 lead before the Sky Sox turned an inning-ending double play.

The Dodgers added another solo run in the top of the fifth to take a 2-0 lead. After Jake Peter walked, starter Brock Stewart moved him into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt and Matt Beaty drove him in on a single to right field.

The Sky Sox, who made a late comeback Friday night, sparked a late rally yet again in the bottom of the fifth. After a one-out double by Emilio Bonifacio, Rymer Liriano singled to put runners on the corners. Pinch-hitter Richie Shaffer then stepped up and skied a three-run home run to right-centerfield, giving the Sky Sox the 3-2 lead. They added one more run after Tyrone Taylor tripled with two outs to plate Nate Orf who singled, making it a 4-2 advantage.

With Erik Davis in relief for starter Adrian Houser (5.0 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 1 SO), a hit-by-pitch to Connor Joe would start the inning for the Dodgers. After a single by Taijeron, Henry Ramos doubled to centerfield to tie the game back up at 4-4. The Sky Sox would go down in order in the bottom half of the sixth before the game was delayed and eventually suspended due to rain and unplayable conditions.

The game resumed the next day, beginning in the top of the seventh inning. Both sides did not successfully plate a run so the game headed into extra innings.

With a runner starting on second base, Ramos moved over the runner on his sacrifice bunt. With the go-ahead run 90 feet away, Will Smith homered to right field to give the Dodgers a 6-4 lead. In the bottom half of the frame, the Sky Sox had runners on first and second with no outs after Dylan Moore was hit with a pitch. Two outs later, Jett Bandy was also hit by a pitch to load the bases. With the tying run on second, Andres Blanco battled but was unable to make magic happen after grounding out to end the contest.

Game Two:

The Dodgers, with their backs to the wall, wasted zero time getting on the board in game two. In the top of the first, Connor Joe led off with a base hit and, with two outs, Edwin Rios homered to centerfield to put them up 2-0.

In the Sky Sox second, Christian Bethancourt broke through, leading off the half with the Sky Sox first hit of the game on his towering home run to straightaway centerfield, minimizing the deficit to 2-1.

Then, in the third, Liriano led off the inning with a double to centerfield. After two consecutive strikeouts, Moore came up and lifted a ball up and over the left-centerfield wall to give the Sky Sox the 3-2 advantage, marking his 10th long ball with the Sky Sox.

The Dodgers caught a late rally in the fourth with two outs after Taijeron drew a walk. With two strikes, Peter clubbed a sky-high home run to right field to gain the 4-3 lead. Starter Logan Bawcom added a single while Joe walked to restart the frame. Ramos stepped up and added a second home run to the frame to put the Dodgers up 7-3.

The Sky Sox crept back in the bottom of the fifth after reliever Nick Ramirez started the frame with a single. After two consecutive outs, Taylor and Bethancourt knocked back-to-back RBI doubles to plate two runs and make it a 7-5 contest.

The Dodgers came right back in the sixth with two runs to extend to a 9-5 lead. Ramos started the rhythm after he brought around his fourth RBI of the game on his one-out double to centerfield. Donovan would single and Rios walked behind him, which led to Kyle Garlick's RBI single to plate the second run. They pushed it to an even 10-5 ballgame when Joe hit a solo home run in the top of the seventh.

The Sky Sox, trailing five runs in the bottom of the seventh, started things off with Orf's one-out walk. After two wild pitches to advance Orf to third, Moore was hit by a pitch to put runners on the corners. Taylor followed and with one swing on an 0-2 count plated three runs via his 20th home run, moving the Sky Sox to within two runs of the Dodgers.

The Dodgers added a final run in the ninth with two outs to make it an 11-8 advantage and the Sky Sox couldn't find late magic to make the comeback, forcing a Monday faceoff.

The Sky Sox head into the final day of regular season tomorrow against the Oklahoma City Dodgers at Security Service Field tomorrow with a 12:30 p.m. MT first pitch in game one.

Final: Kane County 2, Wisconsin 1 (10 innings)

Rattlers Playoff Hopes End with Walkoff Loss at Kane County

Cougars beat Wisconsin 2-1 in ten innings on bases-loaded walk

By Chris Mehring

cut.jpg

GENEVA, IL - The Wisconsin Timber Rattlers playoff chase came to an end on Sunday night with a 2-1 loss in ten innings to the Kane County Cougars at Northwestern Medicine Field. Tim Susnara drew a bases-loaded walk with two outs in to drive in the winning run for the Cougars.

The game nearly started with a bang for Wisconsin (67-71 overall, 36-32 second half). David Fry, Milwaukee's 7th round pick in the 2018 draft, stepped to the plate with one on and two out in the top of the first inning for his first plate appearance as a Rattler. Fry cracked a high, towering drive to left that carried to the wall where Ryan Grotjohn made a leaping grab to take a homer away from Fry.

Jay Feliciano gave the Rattlers a 1-0 lead with a home run to left that Grotjohn could only watch fly over the wall. Feliciano's blast was his fourth of the season and came with one out in the third.

The Cougars (72-65, 37-31) tied the game without the benefit of a hit in the bottom of the third. Rattlers starting pitcher Wilfred Salaman walked Tra Holmes and Jose Caballero to start the inning. The duo pulled off a double steal with one out. Holmes would score on a two-out wild pitch by Salaman to even the score.

The score stayed 1-1 thanks to some great pitching by both sides as neither team had a runner make it past second base from the fourth inning through the ninth.

Kane County starter Mack Lemieux struck out nine Rattlers over 5-1/3 innings. Tyler Keele worked 2-1/3 scoreless frames. Kyler Stout entered the game when the Rattlers had runners at first and second with two outs in the eighth to get the final out of that inning. Stout retired all six batters he faced in the eighth and ninth innings.

Salaman worked around a lead-off single in the fourth to keep the game tied. Matt Hardy tossed a scoreless fifth, but gave up a lead-off double in the sixth. He would strike out the next two batters before giving way to Clayton Andrews.

Andrews walked the first batter he faced, but struck out Ramos for the final out in the sixth. Then, Andrews tossed a scoreless seventh, eighth, and ninth. He would go back out for the bottom of the tenth with pinch-runner Ryan Dobson representing the winning run starting the inning at second base.

Holmes bunted Dobson to third and that was all for Andrews, who struck out six in his 3-2/3 innings.

Wisconsin got creative with Christian Meister coming in from the bullpen in relief of Andrews and the winning run at third with one out and the top of the Kane County order coming to the plate.

Manager Matt Erickson brought Chad McClanahan from left field to play first base and moved Gabriel García to the left side of the diamond for a five-man infield.

Caballero worked the count full before sending a grounder to the right side of the infield. McClanahan made a play for the ball, but the ball went to second baseman Seferina. This left McClanahan out of position. Seferina looked the runner back to third as he raced to first and beat Caballero with a feet-first slide into the base.

The Rattlers elected to walk Yoel Yanqui intentionally, because Yanqui is - including Sunday night - 25-for-74 against Wisconsin pitching this season.

Meister got ahead of Jancarlos Cintron with two quick strikes, but Cintron worked the count full and drew a walk on the ninth pitch of the at bat to load the bases and bring Tim Susnara to the plate.

Susnara was down in the count 1-2 after three pitches, but the next three pitches from Meister missed the strike zone and the bases-loaded walk allowed Dobson to score the winning run and end Wisconsin's playoff chances.

In the second half Western Division Wild Card race, the Beloit Snappers kept their season alive by beating the Cedar Rapids Kernels 9-4 at Pohlman Field on Sunday. The Snappers are now 36-32. Kane County is 37-32. The Cougars will be the Wild Card if they win or Beloit loses on Monday. The Snappers will be the Wild Card if they win and the Rattlers beat the Cougars on Monday.

The team that claims the second half Wester Division Wild Card will host Cedar Rapids in Game One of a First Round Playoff series on Wednesday night.

The final game of the regular season is set of Monday afternoon. Dylan File (7-10, 4.11) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Timber Rattlers. Kane County has named Lane Ratliff (7-1, 2.51) as their starter. Game time is 1:00pm.

Final: Helena 6, Missoula 5 (Again)

Brewers Walk Off Osprey For Fifth Straight Win

Helena Wins In Extras For Fifth Time

By Greg Mroz / Helena Brewers

cut.jpg

Helena, MT - The current home stand has seen the Helena Brewers come up with timely hit after timely hit, and in the penultimate game in the history of Kindrick Legion Field, the Brewers gave their fans one for the books. Down 4-0 early, the Brewers scored five unanswered runs. Missoula tied the game in the eighth, and the game went to extras. The Osprey failed to score in the top of the tenth, and the Brewers got the big hit from Brice Turang, who singled Je'Von Ward to third. Ward scored on the play as the left fielder Jorge Barrosa let the ball scoot past him, giving Helena the 6-5 win, their third straight one run victory and their season best fifth win in a row.

Missoula scored in the first as Buddy Kennedy doubled home Blaze Alexander to make it 1-0. The Osprey added on to their lead with a three run third, with runs scoring on a throwing error and a two RBI single from Joe Robbins.

Osprey starter Wilfry Cruz held the Brewers in check with just two hits allowed through the first four innings, but an error in the fifth turned the tide in favour of Helena. Pablo Abreu popped a ball into shallow right leading off the inning, and right fielder David Sanchez had the ball in his glove and it popped out, with Abreu getting to second on the play. Mike Alescio two batters later doubled home Abreu, and Ward then doubled home Alescio with two out, cutting the Missoula advantage in half.

In the seventh, Abreu smacked a leadoff double, and with one out a balk moved him to third. Alescio singled him home, and after Luis Avila singled Alescio to second, Ward delivered with another double, plating Alescio to tie the game and moving Avila to third. That brought up Turang, who hit a sacrifice fly to center, getting Avila across to give Helena their first lead.

However, Missoula tied the game in the eighth, but very easily could have taken the lead. Zack Shannon drew a leadoff walk, and Eddie Hernandez singled him to second. Robbins then doubled into the right center field game, scoring Shannon to tie the game, but the relay home was in time to nail Hernandez for the first out. Nick Dalesandro walked, forcing Nestor Corredor to go to his closer Michael Mediavilla. The first batter he faced was Barrosa, who grounded into an inning ending 5-3 double play.

Neither team scored in the ninth, sending the game into extra frames. With Mediavilla still on the hill, Kennedy started as the inning as the designated runner. Shannon lined a ball to Turang at short, and Kennedy was too far off the bag, with Turang throwing to second for the easy double play. Mediavilla got Robbins to strike out after a Hernandez single, keeping the game tied. That set up Turang, who lined an 0-1 pitch into left field, moving Ward to third, but Ward crossed the plate as Barrosa whiffed on fielding the ball.

The Brewers with the win eliminated the Osprey from playoff contention, and have a chance to sweep the series tomorrow in the final home regular season game in franchise history. Joey Matulovich gets the start, with first pitch scheduled for 4:05 PM.

Strong finish to the season by Turang. Another guy who may be the next QTC is Michael Mediavilla - 34th round pick who in a very small sample has pitched very well: 30.1 IP, 14 H, 2 ER, 5 BB, 31 K. Yes, he's a college pitcher in Rookie ball, but that type of line is hard to pull off in that league as it is somewhat similar to the PCL in terms of hitter-friendliness.
