2018-09-01: Brewers (Anderson) at Nationals (Strasburg) 6:05 PM CDT [Brewers lose, 5-4 -- Lead Blown in 8th Inning After Two Hour Rain Delay]

Eye Black

Then on the follow up about Jennings he says "We were hoping to avoid him." Well, you were hoping to avoid Hader too for the exact same reason, yet tie goes to Jennings?

Of course it does. He's not a part of the team's long-term plans, they don't have to protect his arm, and veterans are often better adapted to more innings and more frequent outings.

So we're just going to forget about winning games then? In the middle of a playoff race? Because that's what happens when you opt for Jennings over Hader. I don't think it was too much to ask for Hader to face one batter after an off day. Time to take the kid gloves off.

I know it's not exactly 1/2 way, but Hader appeared in 31 games pre AS break, and has only been in 14 post AS Break. The reduction in appearances actually started happening in mid-June. 48 IP 1st half, with only 19 thus far 2nd half. If the Brewers want to actually make the playoffs this year, at some point they need to act like it from a bullpen management standpoint and use their best reliever when game situations call for it. Jennings should be getting his opportunities significantly reduced based on trades/roster expansion - instead it seems like he's getting put in more and more high leverage situations.

Last night's 8th inning game situation should have warranted multiple relievers getting stretched out and loose as soon as the first batter reached on Soria, particularly with Harper and Soto looming should that inning have started getting out of hand. Instead, CC waited until the jam was beyond control to get guys warming up, and compounded it by opting for Jennings and Lyles. Last night was the game to stretch Hader to get a key batter out - winning that game guarantees a series win and gives him another day of rest leading up to the series with the Cubs. Now if Hader pitches today, apparently he might be available for 1 of the next 3 Cub games.

So Jeffress can pitch

2 innings

Day off

1 inning

1 inning

But Hader can’t

.2 innings

1 inning

Day off

.1 innings?!?

They have the same amount of innings this year!!!!!!! Whoever is in charge of this usage logic is an idiot. That is beyond dumb.

One is basically 31 years old and the other is their prized arm and is 24 years of age. It does make a difference. They want him to last. It’s frustrating to lose games because he isn’t available all the time but the other part of me does understand what they’re doing.

Serious question.

Do any of the bench coaches have any input into how CC manages the bullpen or any other aspect of the game?

Do any of them ever say, "Hey Craig, maybe we should consider getting someone up and loose just in case Soria continues to struggle."

"Hey Craig, if Jesus gets on base, maybe we should think about an immediate pinch runner."

Or does everyone on the coaching staff just sit there mute so as not to step on the manager's toes?

I have often wondered what converstations take place and what conversations don't take place when events transpire...

So then why not use Jeffress for the last out in the 8th?

Soria is supposed to be an elite reliever. There is absolutely nothing wromg with bringing him in the game. It’s on him for not getting outs.

He got two, then he slipped and got completely out of whack and stayed in to face at least two more hitters than he should have when he was obviously struggling.

It sucks Soria didn't get the job done and get one more out, but it's poor managing to just let him out there to dump gasoline on an inning when there are multiple other options to get out of the inning before it ever got to Soto.

It's not just soria - cc has done this at times with knebel, logan, jennings, albers, just about any reliever in the pen. Overall he has had a quick hook with starters and almost a predetermined effort to let a struggling reliever hang himself.

Probably didn’t want to have to use him in multiple innings. It’s a great question but I’m guessing that’s the thinking.

Hader has had a couple of bad outings. It doesn’t take away from the fact that he’s one of the best relievers in baseball and a better option than Dan Jennings on his third consecutive (and 4/5) day of work.

This all day long.

Hey Counsell! We are in a WC chase. What are you saving Hader for? Halloween? /rant over :(

According to TH on Twitter, Jeffress would've pitched the 9th if we were leading.

Jeffress can't pitch to a batter in the 8th? If he gives up a hit and the lead, then bring in the gang. Coulda sat Jeffress Sunday and he could in essence pitch in all the Cubs games.

Jeffress could have pitched last night even tho he did the night before but not Hader? Is there a stamina question with Josh?
