Postseason 25-Man Roster Prediction

obobo55new

Like others have said, I expected Cedeno on the roster but now it makes a lot of sense. Blackmon is good vs RHP and LHP. Gonzalez, Parra, and Dahl don't really warrant carrying a loogy.

On my roster prediction I just missed Peralta vs Cedeno, but after the press conference last night it almost confirmed Peralta would be on the roster.

Rolling with the young guys!

I'm shocked only 11 pitchers. Of those, all but Jeffress, Soria, and Knebel I would consider likely multi-inning guys if effective. Chacin is probably scheduled to start games 2 and 5 if necessary. Other than that, I'm expecting maybe 2 of the multi-inning guys trying to bridge 5-6 inning per game.

Very happy Broxton made it! I have a feeling he's coming to come up big somehow.

Granderson/Santana are basically just pure PH so the fact that they play OF is largely irrelevant.

I do feel bad for guys like Thames, Davies, and Chase. Especially since they all had big seasons last year in getting the team so close to the playoffs. Now the team gets over the hump and they're left out. Chase has struggled some this year, but I didn't think he was THAT bad. Davies was fine since he came back but his numbers look bad because he was pretty unlucky.

Not sure about Guerra over Cedeno. Sure, Rockies are RH but I still think you would want a lefty specialist for guys like Blackmon, C Go, Dahl, Parra, etc. As I've said before, Guerra has looked good out of the pen but it is a very small sample size (6 innings) and not in the most stressful situations. We will see how it all turns out!

Guerra is the owner of the Brewers' longest SP outing of the year (8 IP) against ... you guessed it, the Colorado Rockies.

They already announced Chacin is indeed pitching game 2 so no probably about it......and he obviously would then be on reg rest for 5.

Hoping that only having 11 pitchers doesn't bite us in the keyster but I like the strategy.
"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

Guerra did pitched well against the Rockies back in August going 8 innings, and he looked good out of the pen down the stretch. I think those were the factors in his selection.

I feel bad for Thames in particular because he played a major role in us racking up early wins, but not surprising given his last two months. I think he's a guy that needs to play everyday to get in a groove, so not much help in the playoffs.

Anderson is unusable because you're flipping a coin on whether he gives up 2-3 HR in an inning.

I think its predicated on the idea that they no longer can afford Hader not being able to go in back-to-back games if the situation warrants. I would hate to see Hader to 2-3 today, then not be available until Monday. That really limits the options.

Edit: Somehow missed the full list posted.

Only 11 pitchers is a bit surprising for me considering how much they love their bullpen and matchups.

I think Miley gets his shot in Coors, because of the "Coors effect" and cutters and sliders being the more effective pitches at Coors.

Okay, final guess before it's released. It's all about LH/RH matchups.

Aguilar

Schoop/Perez

Arcia

Shaw/Moustakas

Yelich/Braun

Cain

Santana/Granderson

Pina/Kratz

Peralta/Chacin/Guerra/Burnes/Woodruff (starters/long)

Hader/Jeffress/Knebel/Soria/Cedeno/Jennings/Barnes

I was very close. Basically had Jennings/Cedeno/Barnes instead of Gio/Miley/Broxton. I guess they figured they could go with 14 hitters because Gio and Miley can give you a few innings at a time, unlike Jennings and Cedeno... but how often are you going to want to use an LHP against more than 2-3 consecutive batters anyway? I'm not thrilled with 11 pitchers, even with all the off days. I think it would be worth it to use more pitchers each game and have Jennings or Cedeno for guys like Blackmon, CarGo, and Dahl.

ETA: I swear I didn't read the game thread until now and didn't know Woodruff was announced this morning!

I couldn't see a scenario where Broxton wasn't on the 25. I AM surprised at the 14-11 split, but I like that it gets Santana on - I had a hard time leaving him out of my predicted 13. I have a feeling if we proceed past the Rockies, the pitching staff will change a little - Colorado hits lefties pretty well.

As others have said, no Cedeno makes sense given the matchup. Maybe you can use Miley/Gio in the LOOGY role if necessary, and CO is a team that is as close to LOOGY-proof as it gets, given that Blackmon hits lefties quite well.

I worry about Dahl and Gonzalez, of course, but not enough to warrant using a roster spot (probably Broxton's) on Cedeno. I guess it comes to down wanting the speed/defense late over a guy I sometimes can't trust to throw strikes.

This could work, and I understand the strategy. It just means we're likely going to need 2-3 inning stretches out Woodruff, Peralta, and/or Guerra at least 2 or 3 times over the course of the series. Maybe add Miley and/or Gio to that list too.

Surprised that all six outfielders made it. Not surprised to see Guerra and Peralta given the strategy Counsell is going with. I thought Cedeno was a lock, and Jennings would be likely; looks like they are really focused on the right-handed hitters of Colorado. Anderson goes from being penciled in to start the biggest game of the year to not seen since. Would not be surprised to see him traded.

Last call had to be Cedeno or Broxton. They just valued that late game D in potential huge outfield in COL along with maybe needing a crucial SB over the lefty specialist. Maybe they'll use Gio/Miley as needed in an inning that has Dahl and Gonzo due up to alleviate it that issue a bit

I don't know...I know many here have this weird love affair with Freddy..I'm not sure why. I very easily could have done without him on the playoff roster. To be honest, I want him nowhere near a big situation in this series. His control issues WILL rear their ugly head at some point again I'm afraid. I would MUCH rather turn it over to Gio or Miley in a key situation, because they have been there done that. Freddy strikes me as the kind of kid who will get easily rattled by the bright lights and big stage. You can't have that in the playoffs. I hope it works out, and I hope CC ONLY uses him in low leverage situations..like up 3-4 runs, or if they are getting blown out, he can have mop up duty.

Yes... and no. Granderson has been in these situations more than anybody else on the roster. He can be trusted to not lose it mentally, even though he does not have the skills he used to have. I could see Granderson getting some time in the field.

They will be pinch hitting early and often with these bullpen games so extra bat makes sense. Cedeno is a big surprise to me but Williams also could have helped. Hopefully no long extra innings type games because 11 pitchers in Coors could get short fast.Counsell will need to restrain himself a bit. Also Hader better be able to go back to back.
