Braun could bat .800 and we’d still have to read these types of posts.

What type of posts?

Thames is better than Braun offensively and defensively it is not that wide of a margin.

Even with Thames bad defense in the OF he is still a better player than Braun is right now.

I think both Thames and Braun to get hot in September and make the choice a moot point.

Depth, flexibility and options.

That's what we are getting with the trades today.

Let's be honest, it's not like we are going to get a superstar player. These moves allows you minimize your weaknesses, adapt as needed, and be prepared for when injuries arise.

All good.

I don’t think Thames gets many more at bats. Maybe some pinch hit opportunities but even there he won’t be top priority. He’s made his bed much like Domingo did. At least when Braun was cold, he was having clutch hits and smoking the ball. Thames just K’s, plays poor defense, and throws fits.

"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

According to Brewers website Dubon is on 40 man roster. I thought he tore up his knee shouldn’t he be on 60 day dL, thus clearing a 40 man spot?

I had questioned why they didn't do that very same thing. They'd need to put him on the 25-man roster to do it, and he would collect service ML time. That is an option, though.

He would then accrue MLB service time and that is why he is not on the DL.

Thompson, Brooks and or Wilkerson would be my guess since Lyles can be cover multiple innings and would be same role as Brooks/Wilkerson would have. Plus doesn’t Lyles have better stuff than Brooks/Wilkerson have.

Plus Brooks was only Promoted because the bullpen was taxed mid week and needed innings coverage since rosters expand tomorrow, or am I off base?

Thanks for clarifying above on Dubon, you both are very knowledgeable :)

RHP Aaron Brooks and RHP Jake Thompson have been designated for assignment. With the additions of LHP Gio Gonzalez and OF Curtis Granderson, the 40-man roster remains full.

Hopefully they sneak Thompson through. I like his arm. I can't imagine anyone is going to grab Brooks. If they do, oh well I guess. He has pitched well at AAA though.

If this means no more Thames in the outfield I'm all for it, as well as another bench bat. I don't think I've seen a player mentioned as a great locker room presence or overall good guy more often than I have Granderson, which is another positive. It really is just a marginal depth move, but even marginal gains can add up when you have enough of them. Has some indirect benefits too, such as freeing up Keon Broxton to do more pinch running by having more outfield options.

As for the cost; I said it in the Gio thread, I'm a big prospect hugger and would like to keep everyone. But there are a ton of outfielders ahead of Demi in the system. He's got the tools, and maybe one day he figures things out. If so, good for him. But the day, if it comes, where he makes an impact at the major league level is far away, and seems unlikely. I've been dead set against most major trades suggested, but todays moves are of the type I've suggested making; keep your top prospects, if you're making trades make them lower level lottery tickets.

We're not giving up great prospects or anything but we're giving up way too much for players that aren't particularly good and we'll only have for a month.

Yeah, giving up guys that have pretty much no hope.of ever playing in the majors for actual major leaguers is terrible.

I imagine Granderson will start sparingly and be a LH PH option...along with an excellent addition to the clubhouse for a postseason push. Might play some on double switches. I'll add the Granderson is sporting the highest hard contact rate and highest line drive rate of his career, by a significant margin. Good little move here for very little, and yet another pre-Stearns guy.

What's not to like about .788 vs RHP and good defense? Hes not Trout, but solid player that gives you more than Thames, easily. Thames very likely won't be on the post season roster.

I would rather have Thames on the post season roster than Braun.

Why?

Good lord.

One interesting tidbit about Curtis Granderson is he has been a mentor to Corey Ray.

From this Corey Ray Article last winter...

Regular advice comes courtesy of mentor Curtis Granderson, the pride of Illinois-Chicago, who reached out to Ray last fall while Granderson’s Dodgers were on the verge of playing in the World Series.

“With all he had going on, he called because I was going through a rough spot and he just said, ‘Relax, it’s still baseball,’ ” Ray said. “I needed to hear that. I finished strong. I was like, if he can be like that, why can’t I?”

Ray mimics Granderson’s commitment to the community too, which brought the native South Sider to UIC last month for a clinic for about 75 athletes from the Jackie Robinson West Little League. Todd Prince, the JRWLL president who coached Ray when he was 5, ran drills and Ray handed out gear from the Jordan Brand he endorses.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

113 OPS+, compared to 106 for Thames. Comparable advantage of facing RHP's only. Thames spends a lot more time in hitter-friendly parks - especially since they try to use him in the OF only in small parks. Yeah, this is good. Pretty weird to see reactionary posts about how bad Granderson is. This is the second year in a row that Thames has been one of their worst hitters for LONG stretch of games, and they need some consistency. Granderson has been better than Braun as well and has the advantage of being an LHB.

I'm ok with this since Thames seems to be losing it again. As the above poster mentioned though, this is a downgrade defensively. Granderson has been one of the worst defensive OF in baseball this season, even worse than Thames. He's down there with Schwarber and Hoskins. I hope the team realizes this and is getting him out of games in the late innings.
