Brewers Acquire Gio Gonzalez, Gilbert Lara and KJ Harrison go to the Nats (2018)

LOL It just amazes me how so many here love EVERY single one of the Brewers prospects...it's ridiculous people...absolutely ridiculous...you take major league talent EVERY day over unproven prospects. Yes, Gio has struggled, but so was Cole Hamels, how is that working?? What caliber of Pitcher did you want the Brewers to get for those two players this time of year?? Or would you rather watch everyone's darling Freddy Peralta keep getting tattooed in the middle of a playoff chase??

Gonzalez isn't a flashy move, but looking at what Derek Johnson has been able to squeeze out of Wade Miley this year, I'll give him the benefit of the doubt when it comes to underachieving veteran lefties.

You’re coming around!

I agree. Lara has been pretty horrible his whole minor league career, and Harrison wasn't going to stick as a catcher, and hasn't shown the bat for 1B. Both are very meh prospects.

I would have loved to see something more exciting than a soft-tossing lefty, but everything out there has warts. I would have loved to see Jordan Zimmerman, but that contract is a huge detriment.

FWIW, I'm also of the opinion that Stearns just gave up two very minor prospects for a rental of a pitcher who has been really good for most of his career - as recently as last year he was 6th in the Cy Young voting, wasn't he? There's still talent there...

Would I like to see Woodruff/Burnes get a crack at it? Sure. But given that this wasn't going to happen, that there's no long-term commitment here, and how bad Guerra is looking over his past few starts, I'm fine with taking this chance on a guy with a good history.

"Don't force him to choose between Chris Smalling and Phil Jones. It's like asking someone to choose between which STD to contract!"

Gio Gonzalez=Jhoulys Chacin. If I remember them correctly over the last 5years or so in Fantasy. Maybe theres something DJ can work with that has Jhoulys a lil more consistent this year. Not upset with the loss. Probably #25 and later among team prospects.

Judging by the voting on this site, Harrison was in the mid-40s, and Lara was a complete non-factor (1 point).

They are about as "meh" as you are going to get. Harrison has his decently high draft status going for him, and Lara has his big signing bonus (a long time ago). Otherwise no one would know who they are.

Gonzalez has a good track record, was good as late as last year. Struggling this season, but perhaps Brewers believe more in his career numbers than this year and/or see something that they can fix, or simply something that they expect will change. One such thing could be that his BABIP is 25 points higher than his career average. Either way, I prefer him to second half Junior Guerra for sure.

I'm fine with givnig up Lara and Harrison. I believe more in Harrison, but at the same time he's a 22 year old with a sub-700 OPS in A-ball, and the scouting reports I've seen don't rate him as a great defender either. There are other catching prospects ahead of him, and he's a guy who likely would be rule 5-eligible a couple of seasons before he's really ready to be called up. He was 41st in the midseason poll on here, 25th-30 or so in various preseason rankings I found. I'm a prospect hugger and would like to keep them all, but you gotta give up something and I'm OK with this.

I had pretty much given up on Lara awhile ago. It's just disappointing that the Brewers' most massive international investment ever, ended up being such a dud.

The only thing that I like about Gilbert Lara is that he shares a last name with one of the all-time great cricketers... :laughing

Harrison was making the adjustment to full-season after Rookie ball - the July and August numbers were enough that I'd have wanted to see more. I'd rather have seen Mario Feliciano go if the Nats wanted a catcher.

Feliciano is 3 years younger than Harrison. That is pretty significant as well.

KJ rarely played catcher at WI anymore... I can't remember that last time I saw him behind the plate. Mostly DH and 1B recently.

Don’t take this the wrong way but why were you so bent on this move then?

If they didn't see him as a C anymore, they may have been pretty open to dealing him. Catching prospects who have to move to 1B or the OF usually lose a ton of value.

Brewers also received international slot money in the deal. Changes things some

Nice! Now we can sign Steve Nebraska.

Man, he's gotta be pretty seasoned by now.

Still throws triple digits I hear.

Hahahaha Nats missed that and so did I.

No reaction around here? Did everyone see Kratz tag Soto at the plate with his glove...with no ball in it?? Would guess everyone looking at Soto's hand.

I think primarily because this isn’t the the in-game thread.

HAHAHA! Just realized that as I revisited this thread. Nice.
