Why didn't Brewers block Murphy to keep him away from Cubs?

It was pretty obvious that Cubs would have interest in Murphy. Their offense was in the dumps. They're undefeated since he arrived. Worst case was that the Brewers would get awarded him on their claim. Now that would be the logjam to end all logjams, but he has played 60 games in LF and who would you rather have out there, Murphy or Thames?

Because we don't have unlimited financial capabilities and have a log jam at his positions already. I was shocked no one else claimed him though.

Of any of the NL contenders the Cubs were probably the best case scenario. At this point the Brewers are more directly competing with Philly, STL, Colorado, Arizona, LAD, and ATL.

Pretty much this, Murphy would have been preferable to Schoop...but once we got Schoop then Murphy made zero sense. I honestly wouldn't be surprised if the Cubs ended up with Schoop had we not traded for him and put a claim on Murphy.

Well since Thames doesn't play LF....and NO Braun would not shift over to RF.

The advantage to Schoop is that he is able to play SS and is under control for next year. Once Moose was obtained Shaw plays 2b and there is no room for Murphy.

I get being frustrated that the Cubs were able to add to their roster with Murphy but the Brewers can't make moves that handcuff themselves either. Sometimes it just is what it is.
