How did no one else claim him before the Cubs?

Probably because everyone knows the Nats are going to ask for more than most teams would be willing to pay.

It's a weird situation because they didn't decide to sell until after the non-waiver deadline, but now that they've decide to be sellers, they're still in a position to ask a lot. Kind of a perfect storm for blockbuster waiver deals.

I love that the Cubs continue to be ridiculously all-in in a season in which they probably had an 80% chance of winning the division anyway. They're really slamming face-first into a wall of diminishing returns on their win-now moves.

Classic Theo, pedal to the floor at all times...until you've used up all the resources. Then leave and move on to the next big market team in a favorable situation.

I'm not sure if what they're giving up for Daniel Murphy is going to factor into anything long-term.

I totally understand that you can kill your farm system with death by 1000 cuts and it's harder to find that utilityman in July when you have some injuries, but the Cubs have the financial means to cover those things up.

A 21-year-old prospect in high A ball with a .695 OPS. Boy, the Cubs are screwed in 2021.

Yeah, anybody that can't crack the top 30 in that crappy farm system has next to 0 chance of making the majors. I'm a bit surprised and irritated that no other team jumped in.

How unbelievably disappointing. We add another high K hitter in Schoop whereas the Dodgers and Cubs give up less and add better players in Dozier and Murphy. I am a huge believer in Stearns but this trade season has not been kind to his resume

For whatever it's worth, getting Moustakas is more of our 2B acquisition. Still point taken that those other 2 are in most ways superior to Schoop.

Not every franchise can pay $5 million for a good, yet old/veteran bat that will probably play 3-4 days/week.

So where is Murphy going to play? Or does this indicate in a not so subtle way that Bryant is nowhere near 100%?

These moves are basically just cash grabs, you're not going to see significant prospects change hands - the Cubs giving up anything other than $ basically just gets the deal done 2 days faster rather than the Nats just letting Murphy walk.

I remember how much Cub fans hated Murphy back in 2015...they've gone full evil empire at this point.

When Bryant returns:

Against lefties, bench bat.

Against RHP, Baez plays SS, Murphy at 2B.

There’s no doubt about this one. The Cubs lineup just improved. They were already very good and just got better.
"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

Not really the case regarding cost.

If the Brewers didn't want him going to the Cubs they should have put a claim on him, offer nothing and risk the Nationals just giving him to us for the cost of his remaining contract. I assume unwritten rules would be broken though.

Brewers probably didn’t want to risk losing out on so much money for someone they didn’t need. Also might have thought the Cubs wouldn’t have interest in him.

People still think the Cubs and their unlimited resources are "mortgaging the future"?

Even the Yankees learned over the last decade that you can't just give away the farm and throw money at everyone and expect to be anything more than mediocre eventually. And how did their unlimited resources work for them 10 years ago? Remember Soriano and all those other terrible contracts?

I obviously don't know the prospect but yeah, I'm kind of surprised.

Oh yeah, that 1 year the Yankees missed the playoffs really taught them. EDIT: I guess they missed the playoffs in '14/'15 as well, but they're back.

The Red Sox are on pace for one of the best records ever and they're sitting on like $60 million of useless money this year.

The big markets have smart GMs but that doesn't mean they can't just spend their way to success, either.

As for the Cubs and the "how did Soriano and all of those other terrible contracts work out?" - they had more success than a long-tanked/cultivated Brewers farm system. Probably didn't get the bang for their buck but they still had a good 3 year window while the Brewers barely made the playoffs once and finally won a division but sold their farm to do so.

This doesn't really apply though, it's all money and they have plenty of that. The trades giving up legit prospects though are different. Torres looks like a for sure star and the OF to the White Sox looks as good or high chance of success/star level as you can say for someone still in the minors.

So who is the current Cub active roster player to go back to AAA to make room for Murphy right now while Bryant is still on the DL? And I don't think this move gets made unless the Cubs know they're not getting a healthy Bryant back soon. Wouldn't surprise me to see Murphy/Bote in a 3B platoon with the other serving as a primary bench bat.

I don't think this moves their needle all that much, if at all.
