Bryce Harper and 4 More on Waivers

Dead Simmons

Per the Washington Post: On Friday, the Washington Nationals placed Bryce Harper, Daniel Murphy, Matt Adams, Gio Gonzalez and Mark Reynolds on revocable waivers, according to people familiar with their plans. Teams had two days to put a claim on the players. Of the group, at least Harper, Murphy and Adams were claimed. The winning teams were notified Sunday, and have until Tuesday afternoon to work a trade with the Nationals.

I'm not sure what all this means. https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/nationals-journal/wp/2018/08/21/bryce-harper-and-daniel-murphy-have-been-claimed-on-waivers-dont-bet-on-deals-just-yet/?noredirect=on&utm_term=.df1c067bfbfe

If they don't work out a trade that they would be happy with, I would imagine they'd retract the waiver rather than just dumping their salary. But, who knows?

They'd lose out on draft pick compensation on the guys set to be free agents, so unless they really want to shed salary, they aren't going to just let them go for nothing.

Harper/Murphy have both been claimed. Neither makes any sense for us though.

But if I read it right, the Nats could (and will) pull back on the claimant. Right?

They're "revocable" waivers. This routinely happens during the post-trade deadline period. If a player clears waivers, the team is free to trade them. If another team puts in a claim on the player, the waiving team must work out a trade with the claiming team, rescind the waiver (pulling the player back onto the team), or let the player go without compensation (which almost never happens). Claiming a player before they could go to a competing team with a better record - and thus a lower waiver priority - is a common method to "block" a waiver trade during this time period.

A high number of players get put on waivers during the month of August, yet very few of them are actually traded. Since it's bad PR to admit that a franchise is placing most of its players on waivers - and outside the understanding of most fans - you rarely hear about it. It's only a story when one of the players is actually traded.

So everyone's afraid to say it? Ok, I'll put in writing what everyone is thinking.

Cards claim Harper, Harper proceeds to hit 197 bombs in September, propelling the Cards to another WS title. Meanwhile, BF.net explodes on Stearns for dropping the ball, not realizing the Cards were ahead of the Brewers in the waiver claim order.

Does anyone know the history of revocable waivers and why they exist? Just wondering why do it this way instead of just extending the trade deadline to August 31?

Also, partially CC's fault for winning that game on Sunday vs STL

Ohhhh maybe we can trade for Harper and lock him up long term...
"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

Thanks, BJK...but this all seems so unnecessarily complicated. It's generally assumed that Harper will not be a Nat next year. Why don't the Astros or the filthy rich Yanks/Saux/Cubs just BUY the guy?
