Final: DSL Cubs1 8, DSL Indians/Brewers 2

The Brewers' co-op team fell behind early and were never able to climb back into it as the Cubs rolled to an 8-2 win. Not much to see here from the Milwaukee farmhands as all of the pitchers used were from the Indians' organization and outfielder Vitor Watanabe was the only Brewers to reach base, going 0-for-2 with a walk.

Down East 6, Carolina 2

Mudcats Walloped 6-2 by Taveras and Wood Ducks in Kinston

Carolina fell to 0-8 at Grainger Stadium this season with the loss

cut.jpeg

Jorge Ortega gave up a leadoff home run and things went downhill from there. Jorge is now just over two years off of Tommy John surgery and is still not back to where he was before. Nathan Kirby also had a rough night. Robbie Rojas was the catcher in this game. It's disappointing that Cooper Hummel has gotten almost no play behind the plate and Mario Feliciano very little. It is becoming somewhat of a lost year for Mario. You have to wonder if either one of those guys will achieve their goals if they cannot stick behind the plate.

Jorge Ortega: 3 2/3 IP, 6 H, 4 R, 0 BB. 2 K

Nathan Kirby: 2 IP, 3 H, 2 R, 3 BB, 2 K

Cody Beckman: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 3 K

Mario Feliciano: 1-4, HR, 3 K

Joantgel Segovia: 2-3

Final, Game One: Colorado Springs 3, Iowa 1, completion of suspended game

Final, Game Two: Iowa 9, Colorado Springs 4

SKY SOX AND CUBS SPLIT FIRST TWO GAMES OF SERIES

DES MOINES, Iowa – After game one of this quick three-game series against the Cubs in Iowa was suspended yesterday due to rain, the Sky Sox played two games on Wednesday evening, with the completion of game one going to the Sky Sox, 3-1. In the seven-inning game two, the Cubs responded with a big 9-4 win to even the series.

GAME ONE

The first four innings of game one were played on Tuesday evening before the game was suspended due to rain and rescheduled for today, with the Sky Sox leading 1-0 after those four innings of play.

In the top of the first inning, in the first at-bat of the game, Nate Orf was hit by pitch, marking his 18th HBP this season and the second most in a season by any Sky Sox player. Clint Barmes holds the single season record with 22 HBP in the 2007 season. The hit by pitch by Orf is also his 35th HBP in the regular season in his Sky Sox career, tying former Sky Sox catcher Mark Strittmatter for second place all-time with 35 career HBP. Strittmatter played parts of seven seasons with the Sky Sox (1993, 1995-2000). Clint Barmes holds the career HBP record with 47 HBP (2003-2004, 2007-2008). Orf proved to be the only baserunner of the half-inning, however, after a double play and a pop out brought the top of the first to a close.

There would be no scoring in the game until the top of the fourth frame three innings later, when the Sky Sox found their way onto the board first. Eric Sogard led off with a single on the first pitch of the inning, moving up to second on a Christian Bethancourt single. With two outs on the board, Domingo Santana lined Colorado Springs' third single of the inning to score Sogard and make it 1-0, before the suspension put the game on hold for a day.

Through the first four innings, both starters had similar stat lines. Colorado Springs' starter Brandon Woodruff had allowed just two hits with a pair of walks and four strikeouts when the game was suspended, while Iowa's starter Jen-Ho Tseng had allowed just one run on three hits with one walk and five strikeouts.

Tristan Archer took over on the mound for the Sky Sox in the fifth inning when the game resumed this afternoon, while Craig Brooks took over on the mound for the Cubs in the bottom half of the inning. Neither pitcher allowed a run or a hit in their outings, as Archer finished the day with two strikeouts through two innings of work, while Brooks allowed two walks with three strikeouts through 1.2 innings of work.

The game remained a taut 1-0 contest until the bottom of the penultimate inning, when Iowa scored a sole run to tie the game at 1-1. Pinch-hitter Trey Martin led off the bottom of the eighth with a walk, advancing to second on a sacrifice bunt, and to third on a wild pitch. A sacrifice fly from Ryan Court brought Martin home to tie the game.

In the top of the ninth, Santana led off with a walk of his own, moving up to second on a steal. Richie Shaffer and Quintin Berry both then drew walks to load the bases for Orf, who struck out for the second out of the inning. Sogard managed to draw a walk on four pitches, however, scoring Santana with Colorado Springs' fourth walk of the half-inning. Tyler Saladino then reached on a costly Iowa error that allowed Shaffer to score to give the Sky Sox a 3-1 lead, which would be enough to take game one.

GAME TWO

Game two looked like it might also be a low-scoring contest after the first two frames, at which point the Cubs led 1-0. In the bottom of the first inning, Bijan Rademacher drew a walk in the Cubs' first at-bat of the game, moving up 90 feet on a ground out. A Jason Vosler RBI single would then score Rademacher to give the Cubs their first lead of the series.

In the bottom of the third, the Cubs offense exploded for five more runs. Cubs starting pitcher Luke Farrell opened with a ground-rule double, followed by a Rademacher single. Court singled home Farrell, and Vosler singled home Rademacher to make it a 3-0 game. Mark Zagunis then drew a walk, and a Taylor Davis RBI double scored Vosler and moved Zagunis into scoring position at third. Chris Gimenez then hit the Cubs' second ground-rule double of the inning, clearing the bases to give Iowa a 6-0 lead.

In the top of the fifth frame, the Sky Sox broke up the shutout. Tyrone Taylor led off with a single, before Santana and Bethancourt drew back-to-back walks to load the bases for Dylan Moore. Moore singled to plate Taylor and reload the bases for Berry, who struck out while pinch-hitting in the pitcher's spot for the first out of the inning. Orf then lined an RBI single to plate Santana and make it a 6-2 game.

The Cubs went on to extend their lead in the bottom half of the inning. Court and Zagunis both drew walks to put two on for Gimenez, who belted his second homer of the season to make it a 9-2 affair.

Colorado Springs did not go quietly into the night, however, responding in the very next half-inning with a pair of runs in the top of the sixth. Jett Bandy and Taylor led off with a single and a double, respectively, with both coming home on a Bethancourt RBI double to make it a five-run game at 9-4. That score would hold, with the Cubs taking game two to even the series.

Thursday's Preview: The Sky Sox head into the final game of the three-game set against Iowa Cubs, Triple-A affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, with first pitch scheduled for 12:08 a.m. CST. Iowa righty Trevor Clifton (3-2) looks to pick up his fourth win of the season against MLB rehabber Zach Davies, who is 0-2 at Triple-A this season in four rehab starts.

Swipin' Bags: The 143 Sky Sox stolen bases this season is currently the fourth most in a single season. The team record is 169 stolen bases, which was set in 2009. The next feat to reach is third-most 149 set in 2000 while the second-most 151 is held by 2016 squad.

Sweet Tally: With another win on Wednesday, manager Rick Sweet's win count improves to 270 total (regular season) with the Sky Sox. Sweet trails Brad Mills by only one win to tie Mills' club record 271 wins as Sky Sox manager. If you include postseason wins, Sweet is at 272 overall wins, trailing Mills by only four overall wins.

Final: Orem 7, Helena 4

Owlz Snap Brewers Streak At Four

Helena Manages Just One Hit Through First Six Innings

By Greg Mroz / Helena Brewers

Orem, UT - In search of a five game winning streak and a series sweep, the Brewers fell in a hole early and never recovered against Orem. The Owlz scored in the first and never looked back, winning 7-4. Helena's winning streak ends at four, but they finish the seven game road trip 4-3.

For the second straight night, Orem scored a pair of runs in the first. Jeremiah Jackson drew a leadoff walk, and got to third as Kevin Maitan followed him with a double. With D'Shawn Knowles up, Lemons balked home the first run, and one batter later Francisco Del Valle brought home Maitan with a sacrifice fly, making it 2-0 Owlz.

Orem busted the game open in the third, as Rayneldy Rosario started the inning by reaching on an error. Jackson tripled him home, and Maitan then singled home Jackson. Knowles then delivered the big blow with a two run homer, extending the Orem lead to 6-0.

Owlz starter Cristopher Molina allowed a one out single to Yeison Coca in the first, but didn't allow a hit the rest of his outing. The right hander picked up the win, striking out a season high eight over five shutout innings. Helena's offense eventually got going, as they scored four runs over the last three innings, but it was not enough.

The Brewers have tomorrow off and return to action on Friday at home against Grand Junction.
