Nieves No-Hitter ball

JimH5

This isn't mine. But I see Heritage Auctions is selling a ball from the Nieves No-hitter.

I'm interested in seeing how much this gets. A real rarity in Brewers history.

Some bleeding on the ball with the sharpie, but the autograph is not bleeding. Was there something that I missed. How did this Brewers super fan from 1987 get a ball from that road game halfway across the country?

Edit...Ok, after reading some of the other auctions this person was a special events photographer for the Brewers and probably travelled with the team.

Jim, What did this auction sell for … Auction 7195 | Lot: 80227 | Aug 20, 2017

It sold for $2,640, including the buyer's premium.

That seems high, but the ancient and rare memorabilia market is full of very rich guys dropping six-figures on stuff all the time, so for some, this could be a bargain.

Graded 1.5 with those creases on it, it's doubtful that there is a lesser version around for much less.

Everytime I wonder when the bottom is going to drop out of the super high priced market, it doesn't.

I'm interested too. Using black sharpie though? Brutal.

Not sure if they were concerned about sharpie vs. ballpoint on balls back in 1987. I remember being at shows in 1990 or 91 and there were guys in autograph lines getting sharpie signatures. Now we know better.

I got curious and looked up the item. I'm assuming you missed typing 3 zeros at the end of that price, correct?

Not sure why Heritage assigns the same number to different items.

The one I was commenting on was the 1897 Brewers Cabinet Photo featuring Connie Mack. If you scroll down the search of the 31 items with that item number, it's about 1/3 of the way down.

Jim, I'm sure Connie Mack raises the price of that piece quite a bit. I personally think it has good eye appeal for a 1.5. Depending on how many of this piece still exist I could see some being a whole lot worse.

My grandparents lived in the riverwest neighborhood. My aunt liked to rummage sale. I would make my mom and aunt take me to any rummage sales around the Borchert Field stadium block when I was a kid in the 80's. I especially like the 30's-50's Brewers minor league stuff.

Agreed on Mack. It's a nationally historic piece because of him, instead of just local interest.

I'd be interested in it because it's a Brewers piece, but not at that price. I'd want to bust it out of that slab and frame it, which makes it closer to $3,000. Too pricey for me.

Cool on the Borchert Field stuff. The only thing I have from the minor league Brewers is a 1948 game program.

I have taken some of my stuff out to make presentations and lead a baseball themed discussion at a local nursing home, and that old Borchert Field program is a huge hit. Lots of senior citizens have vivid memories of games there.

Apparently beer and soda was sold in bottles, and fans would drop empties onto ground underneath the open bleacher seats and if kids would pick up and turn in enough of those empties, they would get free tickets.
