Link Report for Thursday 8/9 - DSL Brewers Throw a Combined No-Hitter!

And That

Final: DSL Brewers 5, DSL Rangers2 0

DSL Brewers Box Score

It's a no-no! 19-year-old rookie righty Alexis Ramirez and 20-year-old, 3-year veteran lefty Jose Alberro combined to shut down the Rangers on Thursday morning on no hits, just 2 walks, and a hit batter. Ramirez blanked the Rangers through 7 innings before giving way to Alberro, who pitched a perfect final two innings.

To get the trivia out of the way, this was the first Brewers minor league no-hitter since way back less than a year ago when Biloxi pitchers Hiram Burgos, Forrest Snow, Nick Ramirez, and Jorge Lopez no-hit Tennessee. The last 9 inning no-hitter occured in 2012, when Jimmy Nelson, Dan Merklinger, R.J. Seidel, Darren Byrd, and Brandon Kintzler blanked Chattanooga as members of the Huntsville Stars. The last DSL no-hitter for the Brewers was in 2011, which was a 7 inning complete game job by Juan Francisco (no, not that one). It was the 23rd no-hitter thrown in the minor leagues this year, though 10 of those no-hitters were sub-9 inning games.

Alexis Ramirez was transferred over from the co-op team on August 2nd, and results have been outstanding in his two starts. With the main DSL club, he has pitched 12 innings, and allowed only 3 hits, 3 walks, 3 runs, and has struck out 12. His ERA for the year is a less impressive 4.08, but he's been making steady progress, which is the what the Brewers are looking for out of Ramirez. He's a little on the older side for a DSL rookie and we don't know much about the native Dominican given his below-the-radar signing but perhaps that will change a little after today's proceedings.

Jose Alberro was another unsung addition to the organization, he a July 2016 international signee out of Puerto Rico. Alberro didn't pitch much in 2016, and did not pitch particularly wonderfully last year, with 40 walks in 37.1 innings pitched. He's blossomed in the past year though, slicing his BB% from 22.9% in 2017 to 7.2% in 2018, and likewise boosting his K% from an already-robust 25.1% in 2017 to 30.9% in 2018. Alberro also induces a very good number of ground balls, a 50% rate this year. As with Ramirez, we don't know much about Alberro, but we do know he seems to have put in a lot of hard work with the DSL coaching staff and it seems like he is on the brink of playing stateside ball with the Brewers.

Oh, and the offense scored some runs. Oswel Leones hit his second home run in four games, added a single and a walk as well, and is now hitting .305/.399/.384. Leones was joined by Larry Ernesto and Luis Silva in the two-hit club for this game. Which is two more hits each than the Rangers had as a team.

Final: DSL Rangers1 3, DSL Brewers/Indians 1

DSL Brewers/Indians Box Score

Meanwhile, the other Rangers DSL team wreaked its revenge on the other Brewers DSL team. The co-oppers did manage three hits, and two of them belonged to Brewers farmhands. Roberto Molina and Bryan Dimas each hit a double, and Molina scored the lone run. Birthday boy Ricardo Velasquez was the only Brewer to pitch, tossing a scoreless 8th.

Wasted no time starting Harber, doing good through three innings.

Edit: 6.2 IP, 6 H, 0 BB, 6 K

I haven't seen him pitch, but I read a scouting report last year that said he had an elite spin rate. Might be the best - and only - starting pitcher to come out of the 2015 draft (race between Eric Hanhold, 6th round, Jon Perrin, 27th round, and QT-C, 35th round, to be the first players from that draft to make the majors - who had that?).

Woodruff walked the first three batters too... bad night to do that. Little different though when it's a starter than when it's the 9th and up two runs.

I’ve seen Harber pitch quite a few times. He has a really good curveball but he’s struggled getting swing and miss on both that and his fastball because his command waivers and he leaves pitches all over the place. When he’s right, he’s somewhere between a back end starter and middle relief prospect.

Each game of the seven-game Helena road trip that begins tonight will be available via MiLB.TV with the home team calls.

Only happens three series all year (the first was in Idaho Falls earlier this season).

Great to see Helena in action. Not so great the first 4 innings took 8.5 hours and Brewers pitchers threw eleventy million balls out of the zone and no one can actually catch a ball.

This recent stretch has definitely been the most consistent in Harber's career. I think his last five starts he's been at or near a strikeout per inning and two or fewer walks with a WHIP of about 1 and an ERA of less than 2.00 over that period.

I think he's the best prospect not to get a vote in the recent poll. Still think he ends up being a Major League pitcher, even if it is as a middle reliever.

Final: AZL Giants Black 11, AZL Brewers 2

AZL Brewers Box Score

Close game until the 8th inning when the Giants unloaded on Renny Tolentino and Brady Schanuel to the tune of 9 runs. Starter Carlos Luna pitched 3 full innings for the 2nd time, which is good. Probably expect to see him in Wisconsin next year.

Korry Howell, playing third base in this one, was on base thrice with two singles and a walk. Joe Gray doubled and walked and Caleb Marquez hit his first pro home run. Rehabbing catcher Moises Perez made his 2018 season debut and well, he struck out in his lone PA and allowed 2 passed balls and one stolen base in his one inning behind the plate.

Walks & Errors Doom Brewers In Series Opener

Rockies Score Six In Third On Just One Hit

By Greg Mroz / Helena Brewers

cut.jpg

Grand Junction, CO - Looking to start a seven game road trip on the right note, the Brewers fought back to tie the game in the top of the third inning after falling behind 2-0 early. Yet Helena's hopes of taking a lead quickly vanished in the bottom of the third, as Grand Junction scored six runs to take a commanding 9-3 lead. The Rockies scored in each of the first six innings, cruising to a 14-9 victory. Helena committed five errors in the ballgame while walking seven.

The Rockies spoiled Caden Lemons' Helena debut, as the first three reached in the first inning, with two scoring on a single from Coco Montes. However, the Rockies loaded the bases, but Lemons didn't allow another run to score in the inning.

Helena got a run back in the second, as singles from David Fry and Jesus Lujano, along with a walk from Bryan Connell, loaded the bases with one out. Mike Alescio then hit a sacrifice fly to center field, cutting the Rockies lead to 2-1.

Grand Junction got a run back in the second on a double steal, but Helena tied it in the top of the third on an RBI single from LG Castillo and an RBI ground out from Pablo Abreu. That though is when it all came apart.

Joel Pinto entered to start the third, and after getting the leadoff hitter, he walked three straight to load the bases. Will Golsan then grounded a potential double play ball to second, but an error occurred as Brice Turang dropped the throw to second. A run scored to make it 4-3 Rockies, but then Hunter Stovall skied a routine fly ball to center that Abreu dropped, scoring a second run and keeping the bases loaded. With Roberto Delgado in, a wild pitch with Montes up brought home a run, and then a sac fly scored the fourth run of the inning. That set up Grant Lavigne, who cleared the bases with a two run homer, his sixth of the year to make it 9-3 Grand Junction. Lavigne's home run marked the only hit in the inning, in which all but one run was unearned.

Grand Junction scored two in the fourth, two in the fifth, and one in the sixth, and while Helena scored six runs combined in the last four innings, it was nowhere near enough.

The Brewers look to hit the reset button tomorrow as they send Blake Lillis to the hill. Grand Junction counters with righty Trent Fennell. First pitch is at 6:40 PM, with the pregame show hitting the airwaves of helenabrewers.net at 6:25 PM.

Helena Box Score

It takes a lot for me to become so disgruntled with a baseball game that I just turn it off, especially for a team I am barely ever able to watch, but I couldn't make it through the bottom of the 5th in this one. Just a sloppy, terrible, mind-numbing game for Helena. I don't think I've ever seen a pro game where a team straight up missed 4 four easy catches, but Helena managed that. Plain old bad lack of concentration errors from Mike Alescio, Brice Turang, Pablo Abreu, and Luis Avila. The photo above more or less sums up how the game went.

On the pitching side, Caden Lemons and Joel Pinto just could not throw consistent strikes. Pinto in particular had zero fastball control, including a few spiked fastballs. Spiking a few curveballs is one thing, but spiking multiple fastballs within an inning is a whole other thing. Not good. Michele Vassalotti only walked one in his three innings but couldn't throw quality strikes and was either wild outside the zone or grooving pitches. I gave up on the game before Logan Gillaspie pitched but I'll go back and watch his outing tonight. He worked 2 clean innings, which was a minor miracle in this game.

LG Castillo and David Fry (playing third base for the first time as a pro) each had three hits as the Brewers attempted a comeback. Fry had a double, and Je'Von Ward tripled and walked twice in 3 official at-bats.

This was my first live look at a lot of these guys and I have to say that Abreu, Jesus Lujano, and Bryan Connell are all legit prospects. Connell in particular is already a big, physical dude and it looks like he could add even more muscle to his frame. He was badly fooled by breaking stuff but also had some good swings and appears to have plus bat speed.

I gave up on the game before Logan Gillaspie pitched but I'll go back and watch his outing tonight. He worked 2 clean innings, which was a minor miracle in this game.

Went back and watched, and Gillaspie was actually pretty impressive. Was throwing middle 90s with late life, and complimented that with a curveball and pretty good looking changeup. Got a number of swings and misses on his fastball up in the zone, and armside movement just ate up RHB.
