Arcia heating up

Last 7 games 375/412/625

Last 15 games 273/333/386

I'd take that last 15 games slash with elite SS defense all day.

There been a few hiccups, but his approach at the plate has improved. He's taking more pitches and not swinging nearly as wildly as he was pre-demotion. The guy is a skilled offensive player ... he just needs to get out of his own way at times.

Arcia should be playing every game started by Wade Miley. The rest should be a match up game based on the opposing SP. He should be entering every game as a defensive replacement when they have a lead.

I agree with you though. a ~700 OPS from Arcia would be acceptable as an everyday SS with very good-elite defense at SS.

He's keeping his front foot down, finally.

Now he's just got to work on the back foot :)

Does anyone else think Arcia's demotion and limited play might relate to some coachability and arrogance issues? He was hitting terribly and I question how much redirection he accepts. Only if the Brewers could get .250 out of him!

Maybe. But unless there's proof, I don't believe in even suggesting this. Same thing with Santana being lazy. These guys get paid a lot to play a game, so criticism comes with the territory. Just my opinion, but I draw the line at calling out someone's effort, not being coachable, etc.

Absolutely. Arcia's has always seem to teeter on that fine line between confidence and arrogance. That's not unusual for young guys who have success early in their careers.

He's capable of so much more than .250. He could be a star if he gets his head right. But he could be a major flame out. I'm fine with Counsell not using him every day and getting his best in 3 starts per week or so the rest of the way.

While I am thrilled that Arcia has done well for a bit, I'm not going to get overly optimistic. Just like Schoop, 30-40 ABs shouldn't sway us too much. Is it encouraging? Sure.

To me, the good thing is that a people have pointed out he's looking better at the plate. If he was doing the exact same stuff - but getting better results - I'd be skeptical that luck was the primary factor involved in that. But it's great to hear people say he's improved his approach.

Like reilly said it is more about approach and for the most part it has been better. There was a strikeout like his third game back that was like same old Arcia but for the most part I think he is looking better. That clutch hit he had on Sunday also impressed me. That take out his best game argument I have never liked, if you take out his first game back from the minors he is slashing 333/394/500.

Those numbers are inflated by last night's game. Take away last night, since he was brought back he's got a .584 OPS.

His numbers are also being deflated by a 1 for 9 start after being called back up. Take those first two games out and even without last night's game, he had a .724 OPS over 25 plate appearances during a 9 game stretch. So horrible start, followed by a stretch of acceptable production, followed by a big game. Looks like improvement to me, albeit we're breaking down a really small sample size here still.

Also should point out that Perez has been really good at the plate the last five weeks or so.

  • 1 month later...
Arcia ended up going 290/320/386 after his return from the minors. Certainly can't ignore his horrible first half offensively but if he can consistently put up his second half number over an entire season he will be a quality SS for us for many years to come.

Can somebody glue his feet down? If they did we would see a lot more games like Monday... I'm just saying... lol.

Tip of the cap to him for sticking with it this year. But if he only changed his approach and footwork, he could hit .280+ in a season....

I mean, he hit .277 last year. Your point isn't lost ... but the kid can hit a bit, he just couldn't get out of his own head this year. Hopefully he is good to go the next few weeks. Go Crew!

Nope it's .671 since he was called up, excluding his 4-4 in game 163. And excluding that same game, his Sept. slash line was .288/.324/.409/.733 -- right in line with a reasonable expectation for him at this stage of his career.

His PAs in #163 were significantly better than anything we've seen from him all season, so it wasn't just a fluky 4 hits. In fact he probably had as good a night at the plate as any Brewer in that game, in terms of approach. Here's hoping he & Coles have figured something out at the plate & he can stay hot.

LOL jerichoholicninja's post from from Aug. 9. Nice to see Arcia has improved since then, though.

That , my friend, is why he is so frustrating!!! It's like when Carlos Gomez got power happy after hitting one out. You just hope to god they remember to tone it back and work on contact!

He CAN be a stud on both sides of the ball, just has to calm down his mechanics at the plate - to then help with repeating the same swing/swing path each time... better chance at success that way!

Ugh... I guess I should read the thread more often (or at least more closely).

I'll leave my post up since 1) it's been quoted & 2) desereved public shaming for me

Sorry jerichoholic!
