Brewers claim Ariel Hernandez

Scouting report is basically insanely good stuff (95-100 MPH fastball, wicked curve), with no control whatsoever.

You ain't kidding...24.1 IP, 14 H, 6 HRs, 22 BB, 29 Ks

Good guy to take a flier on if the Brewers can find something in his mechanics to get some more consistency

Mid August in the midst of a postseason run isn’t an appropriate time for experiments.

A team that wants to get serious about a postseason run should not be signing sub par pitchers. Nothing more than a minor league filler

I doubt he pitches meaningful innings with the big club. This is probably a guy you hope finds his command to turn into an impactful reliever. He is only 25.

Exactly. He's probably headed straight to Colorado Springs, maybe gets called up in September and auditions in blowouts but that's probably it. Definitely not the worst flyer for a vacant 40 man spot.

From what I can tell he only used options in 2017 and 2018 so should have another one in 2019. Claiming a minor leaguer shouldn't really impact a serious contender's playoff run. If they find somebody else to help the big league club they will just DFA Hernandez or another minor league guy like Asher. Nothing wrong with this move.

Interesting guy to get as a free trial. Neither Cincy or LA were able to get him to harness his stuff, so not sure if the Brewers can do anything with him.

In an odd sort of way CS might actually help him. The thin air will take some of the break out of his curve, so it's less likely to dive out of the zone. Also given the known challenge pf pitching there, it might focus him on location more than raw stuff.

It wouldn't be crazy to let him have some low-leverage innings this season. He's having a nice season in the minors results wise (low ERA and very few HRs), and it is possible to be successful with a comical walk rate (for example, last year Dellin Betances had a 2.87 ERA and 6.6 BB/9, and Carl Edwards Jr. had a 2.98 ERA with a 5.2 BB/9).

Two things that jumped out at me are that he was Rule 5'ed in 2015 and couldn't establish himself as a major leaguer in '16, '17 and '18. That and the San Francisco Giants have a pretty good history of developing pitching. Hernandez was in their minor league system for five years and never got past the Arizona League. Looks like the longest of long-shots to me.

Elite stuff/spin guy with deuce control

At least they won't have to buy the guy diapers then.

Remember what Yoda said:

"Cubs lead to Cardinals. Cardinals lead to dislike. Dislike leads to hate. Hate leads to constipation."
