AUDIO via Matt Pauley's Brewers Extra Innings Podcast: "The July 31st trade deadline is in the books. Even though some trades can be made, we now have a pretty good idea of what the Brewers will look like for the final two months of the season. What should we expect of them? What will playing time look like with the glut of infielders? What role will the newest member of the Brewers, Jordan Lyles, play? Host Matt Pauley hits on those topics and more and will also get the input of BrewerFan.net's Jim Goulart.

We are now more than halfway through the season for the short-season clubs. Matt will be joined by Helena Brewers broadcaster Greg Mroz to learn more about some of the prospects playing in the Pioneer League."

Damn. A few folks might be revising their top-25 lists.

I've said it before, there's a reason the Brewers drafted him ahead of Burnes. Shutting him down for precautionary reasons after drafting him set him back a little, but the upside is there.

That draft of Ray, Erceg, Feliciano, Webb, Burnes, Brown, and Henry could go down as being one of the best team drafts of any team this decade.

Final: DSL Indians/Brewers 2, DSL Red Sox2 1

The Brewers' Dominican Summer League team had their game rained out on Monday, but the co-op team managed to get their game in and they walked away with a 2-1 win in extra innings. Starling Javier was the lone Milwaukee hurler used, and he wound up picking up the win after throwing two shutout innings of one-hit ball. Roberto Molina led the offense, going 2-for-4 with a double and a run batted in. Luis Valderrama doubled and Rafael Brito added a single while Reidy Mercado drew a pair of walks and stole his 16th and 17th bases of the season.

Carolina Drops Series Opener 3-2 Despite Webb's Gem

Braden Webb struck out eight over six scoreless innings on Monday night

cut.JPG

Braden Webb was the story in this game with one of his best efforts this year. It was his best game score. The only problem was the 93 pitches in 6 innings which necessitated that he come out after 6. Hopefully, the Mudcats will come up with one of those strikeout montages for this game. Alec Kenilvort gave up two runs in the 7th to tie the game but he should have been out of the inning. Dallas Carroll's 20th error with two outs prolonged the inning and resulted in the two tying runs scoring later on. Cody Beckman gave up the final run to take the loss.

Cooper Hummel reached base in all four at bats, three on walks. Ryan Aguilar homered for the Mudcats. They will be coming out with an interview of Weston Wilson in the next couple of days in which he will discuss his injury (ankle) and his hot streak in July.

Braden Webb: 6 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 2 BB, 8 K

Alec Kenilvort: 1 IP, 2 H, 2 R, 0 ER, 1 BB, 1 K

Cody Beckman: 2 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 2 K

Mario Feliciano: 1-4, 2B

Cooper Hummel: 1-1, 3 BB

Ryan Aguilar: 1-4, HR

RAINIERS TAKE SERIES ADVANTAGE WITH EXTRA-INNING WALKOFF

TACOMA, Wash. – The Sky Sox dropped game three of this four-game set against the Tacoma Rainiers on Monday night, falling 3-2 in ten innings after being tied at 1-1 through the first nine frames. Though there were 19 runs scored in the first two games in this series, Monday night's game remained a tight 1-1 contest through nine innings and into extras before the Rainiers walked off in the bottom of the tenth to win 3-2.

After two scoreless innings kicked off the game, the Sky Sox were the first to score in the top of the third inning. After a Rymer Liriano strikeout, Tyrone Taylor and Dylan Moore hit back to back singles to put runners on the corners for Nate Orf. With Orf at the plate, Moore was picked off and caught stealing second in a rundown, allowing Taylor to score during the chaotic baserunning play to make it 1-0 Colorado Springs.

In the bottom of the inning, the home team responded right away. Zach Vincej grounded out for the first out of the inning, before Ben Gamel hit his first AAA triple of the season to put the tying run 90 feet from home. Gordon Beckham then hit an RBI single to score Gamel and tie the game at one run apiece.

Right-handed pitcher and Brewers rehabber Zach Davies made his fourth rehab stint for the Sky Sox Monday night, tossing 4.2 innings, allowing just the one run on five hits with a pair of walks alongside a pair of strikeouts. In his last rehab start, on Wednesday, August 1st, Davies threw two and two-thirds innings and allowing five runs on just four hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Overall, after four rehab starts with Colorado Springs, he has totaled 13.1 IP, 15 H, 8 ER, 7 BB, 11 K and is 0-2. Conversely, Tacoma's starter— Ross Detwiler — threw 6.1 innings for the Rainiers, also allowing just the one run on seven hits with a sole walk and four strikeouts.

The game remained tied at 1-1 through regulation, sending the game into extra innings. In the top of the tenth inning, according to the new extra-inning rules, the Sky Sox started with a runner on second base, in the form of Quintin Berry who came into the game in the critical situation to pinch-run for Domingo Santana. Berry advanced to third on a wild pitch, coming home on a shallow sacrifice fly off the bat of Taylor, leading to a close play at the plate that saw Berry safe to make it 2-1 Sky Sox, despite Colorado Springs failing to collect a single hit in the inning.

In the bottom of the tenth, the Rainiers started with Seth Mejias-Brean as the runner on second. After Ian Miller and Vincej struck out to put the Rainiers down to their final out, the Sky Sox intentionally walked Gamel to put the winning run on. With two on and two out, Beckham knocked his 19th double of the season on the first pitch he saw to score both Mejias-Brean and Gamel to walkoff the Sky Sox 3-2, taking a 2-1 series lead in the process.

The Sky Sox continue into game four of the set with a 1:35 PM CST first pitch tomorrow before taking a day off prior to returning home to Security Service Field on the 9th to take on the Nashville Sounds. Colorado Springs righty Alec Asher (5-3) is set to face Tacoma's righty Rob Whalen (7-5) on Tuesday.

Dead Even: The Sky Sox and Rainiers entered into this series with a dead even 172-172 all-time record, with the Sky Sox going 103-67 at home and 69-105 in Tacoma coming into this four-game set. With Monday's win, the Rainiers took an advantage at 174-173 with a 2-1 series. The Sky Sox will need a win on Tuesday afternoon to finish the all-time series even at 174-174.

Sweet Tally: With the Sky Sox win Sunday afternoon, Rick Sweet marks his 268th regular season win with the Sky Sox. Sweet now trails Brad Mills by only three wins to tie Mills' club record 271 wins as Sky Sox manager. If you include postseason wins, Sweet is at 270 overall wins, trailing Mills by only six overall wins.

The Hunt For First: The Sky Sox continue the hunt for their second-consecutive playoff run, battling it out with other top contender of the American North – the Oklahoma City Dodgers. Last season, the Sky Sox broke one of the longest postseason droughts in professional sports – taking the American North division for the first time and breaking their 20-year absence. Currently, with each team taking losses on Monday, the Dodgers still hold a two-game advantage in the standings over the Sky Sox.

Yes, it was on the broadcast. The Mudcats know the radar gun used at the stadium is high and they are planning to fix that. In the meantime, Webb did hit 102 while I was listening to the broadcast.

Final: AZL Brewers 3, AZL Angels 2 (11 innings)

AZL Brewers Box Score

Anderson Melendez hit a home run in the 7th and drove in the go-ahead run in the 11th to lead the Baby Brewers to victory. This is great news for Melendez, who by any metric is having a terrible first stateside season. He's hitting .127/.176/.222 after Monday's 2-hit outburst and has drawn 1 walk against 30 Ks. Melendez got a pretty decent signing bonus and is a decently regarded prospect, hence his push stateside after an unspiring debut season in the DSL last year. By the way, I don't know if he's related to DSL catcher and currently more-regarded prospect Andres Melendez or not, but they're both from Barquisimeto, Venezuela and given the similar names I'm going to say there is a chance they are family. I'll check with the Brewers on that one.

Aussie catcher Alex Hall tripled and walked to raise his slash to an impressive .274/.352/.484. The defense would seem to be a work in progress, however. He's thrown out 3 of 22 base runners. Connor McVey, who we haven't seen since the second day of the season, was back as a pinch-hitter and second baseman.

On the pitching side, Cam Robinson reeled off the longest start of his career, throwing 5 full innings. He allowed a run on 3 hits and 2 walks, while striking out 5. The 18-year-old Floridian reminds me physically of Taylor Williams, as a shorter but well-built righty who throws out of a high 3/4 slot with good glove-side movement on his fastball (currently low 90's) and a potentially plus slider. He's still developing a change-up, but he has a chance to be a good one. Keep an eye on him.

Also have to point out that Johan Dominguez stuck out the side in the bottom of the 11th, which runs his AZL scoreless streak to 13.1 innings. He's 22 and should be given a shot in Helena (maybe even Wisconsin) yet this season. He's not a big "stuff" guy but clearly is overmatching rookie ball hitters.

Webb almost unhittable for Mudcats

Brewers righty allows one hit, two walks over six shutout frames

VIDEO: Braden Webb K Montage

VIDEO: Ryan Aguilar HR

This is great, thanks for finding Webb's montage. Looked like none of them were on a fastball - first couple were a nasty curve, then looked like either a wicked slider or changeup.

Hopefully the walks have been a function of working on those off-speed pitches. If he throws upper 90's and can harness that curve and change... wow.
