Adding a lefty for the pen?

I believe this is something that needs to be addressed. My two ideas for true loogys would be Francisco Liriano and Jerry Bleivens. Liriano could also spot start though he has been shaky in that role this season. Before i dropped him last week in fantasy, lefties were hitting like .100 against him with a decent sample size.

I don't think there really is a need to add a LOOGY to the pen.

I don't think they really need one to get through the rest of the season.

If they get to the playoffs, Hader/Soria/Jeffress/Knebel and maybe Burnes are going to be pitching the important innings. Lefties are hitting 216/.269/.294 against Jennings over 94 batters faced.

So between Jennings facing almost exclusively lefties and letting those other guys face R and L handed hitters I think they'l be ok.

I just checked out Will Smith’s stats. Wow.

Yah I was never particularly thrilled with that trade, even from the start.

3.5 or 4.5 years of Will Smith (whatever it was) and we got a once good catching prospect and a nice pitching prospect...but one seemed destined for a high leverage bullpen role.

Seemed like a light return and now looks terrible because we started competing so fast and our return is absolute junk now.

Smith threw 40 innings in 2016, didn't pitch in 2017, and missed the first month of 2018. Let's see how the rest of this year and next season go before declaring it a busted trade.

"Dustin Pedroia doesn't have the strength or bat speed to hit major-league pitching consistently, and he has no power......He probably has a future as a backup infielder if he can stop rolling over to third base and shortstop." Keith Law, 2006

Look within? Quinton Torres-Costa? He's been pretty impressive. Allowed just 22 hits in 42 2/3 innings and zero home runs. I don't think it's a pressing need but Torres-Costa certainly should be considered for a September call up.

Exactly, if memory serves me right, he will need to be added to the 40 or be exposed to the Rule 5.

The return looked pretty decent at the time for us since all we had to go on were prospect rankings. Obviously the Giants saw Stearns coming from a mile away and dumped the hot mess that is Bickford on him.

Stearns had very little respect for the talent he inherited. Davis, Gennett and Smith brought back next to nothing. One's an AL MVP candidate with the most HR in baseball since he was traded. Another was an All Star this season, and Smith is one of the best LH relievers in the game. Not only that, he chose to sign Matt Albers instead of bringing back Jared Hughes who's got an ERA of 1.30 in 55 games for the Reds.

Hughes would've cost nearly $3M rather than the $1M-ish deal he got last year when Cincy let him go in similar salary-driven circumstances.

That would have been a better investment than paying a 35 year old Albers, who had a 6+ ERA in 2016, $5 million over 2 years.

Is there any way that Will Smith would clear every other team in the NL below us in order for us to try to make a deal with the Giants? Boy, that would be a fun reunion with him and Jeffress. Both guys having tremendous years, and it would allow to say adios to Jennings (just never been a big fan of his this year).

Thoughts? I'm guessing that one of the other teams directly below us in the standings (Col, Phi, LA) would probably claim him before we got the chance, right?

There is no way Smith would make it past the Dodgers or the Rockies. Both need major bullpen help.
