Final: Tacoma 9, Colorado Springs 3

RAINIERS TAKE GAME ONE OF SERIES FROM SKY SOX SATURDAY NIGHT

TACOMA, Wash. – After winning game three against the Reno Aces last night, the Sky Sox dropped game one against the Tacoma Rainiers tonight 9-3.

In the first game of this four-game contest, it was the home team who scored first, in the bottom of the second inning. Andrew Aplin led off the inning with a walk, advancing to third on a Seth Mejias-Brean single to put runners on the corners with one out. Zach Vincej then grounded into a force play, with Aplin scoring and Mejias-Brean out at second. A wild pitch allowed Vincej to move into scoring position for Ben Gamel, who doubled him home to make it 2-0. Gordon Beckham then hit an RBI single to extend the lead to three runs.

In the bottom of the fourth, Tacoma extended their lead further. Mejias-Brean led off with a double, moving up to third on a ground out and coming home on a Gamel single. Gamel advanced to third on a Beckham double and scored on a Daniel Vogelbach ground out to give the Rainiers a 5-0 lead.

In the top of the fifth, the Sky Sox scored for the first time this evening. Despite two quick strikeouts to start the inning, Tyrone Taylor hit a solo home run—his 14th of the year—to make it 5-1. In the bottom of the fifth, Colorado Springs' starter Adrian Houser was pulled from the game after giving up a leadoff double. Houser finished the day with six runs (all earned) allowed on nine hits with four walks and a sole strikeout in four-plus innings of work.

After the leadoff double by Aplin, Cameron Perkins singled to put runners on first and third for Mejias-Brean, who forced Perkins out at second, scoring Aplin in the process to make it 6-1. Vincej was then hit by pitch to put two on for Gamel who singled to load the bases. Beckham then singled to score Mejias-Brean and re-load the bases for Vogelbach, who hit a sacrifice fly to drive in Vincej. David Freitas then hit an RBI single to score Gamel and make it an eight-run game at 9-1.

After no score change in the sixth or seventh innings, the Sky Sox fought back in the eighth. Dylan Moore hit a one-out single, Nate Orf was hit by pitch, and Tyler Saladino singled to load the bases. A wild pitch let everyone move up 90 feet to make it 9-2. Domingo Santana was then hit by pitch to re-load the bases for Dustin Houle, who hit a sacrifice fly to score Orf and make it 9-3.

There would be no further runs scored in the game, with the Rainiers taking game one 9-3 over the Sky Sox.

The Sky Sox are in Tacoma for a four-game set against the Rainiers, before taking a day off prior to returning home to Security Service Field on the ninth to take on the Nashville Sounds.

Sunday's Preview: The Sky Sox continue their four-game set in Tacoma against the Rainers tomorrow, with first pitch scheduled for 3:35 p.m. CST. Colorado Springs righty Aaron Brooks is set to face Tacoma's right-hander Christian Bergman. Both pitchers are in search of their eighth win of the season.

Box Score / Game Log

Nick Ramirez, who started a game at first base earlier this week, pitched two scoreless late, with the game out of hand.

Was wondering if "Zeek" was the real name of the Billings player (it isn't).

Several three-hit nights to see.

Brice Turang only one error in a dozen Maryvale games, but three errors in four Helena contests.
