LHP Aaron Ashby pitches Friday...

Happy to see Burlington reliever Austin Krzeminski having a nice season. He is the young man who threw the inside pitch that Maryvale's Julio Mendez turned into last August, causing a cardiac event that nearly took Mendez' life. I have updated Austin from time to time when we see positive updates on Julio, and Austin has been so truly appreciative that Mendez is going to be able to enjoy a fruitful life.

Osprey Swoop In On Brewers Early To Split Series

Missoula Scores 13 Runs In The First Three Innings

By Greg Mroz / Helena Brewers

cut.jpg

Missoula, MT - On Thursday night in Missoula the Brewers got swooped in on early by the Osprey, as they scored 13 runs combined in the first three innings. Helena never recovered, falling 14-2 and splitting the two game set with the Osprey.

Missoula's offense broke the ice in the first for the second straight night, as the Osprey put runners at the corners against Victor Castaneda with one out. Zac Almond brought home the first run with a sacrifice fly, and the inning stayed alive on an error. Brandon Leyton made the Brewers pay for their defensive mistake, pounding a ball into the left center field gap, going for a triple and scoring two runs.

The Osprey kept the pedal to the floor in the second, as a leadoff walk to Cesar Garcia scored on a two out double from Blaze Alexander. Buddy Kennedy then singled home Alexander, and Zac Almond cleared the bases with his league leading ninth homer, giving Missoula the 7-0 lead after two. It ended the night for Castaneda, marking the second time in his last three starts going two innings or less.

In the third Jenri Montas entered, and exited before the inning was over, as Missoula sent 11 men to the plate in frame, scoring six runs to take a 13-0 lead.

Osprey starter Deyni Olivero allowed the first two Brewers to reach in the first, but then retired the next 14 Brewers he faced, with that streak being broken on a two out error in the fifth. Helena finally broke through against Olivero in the sixth, as they loaded the bases with one out on three consecutive singles. LG Castillo then popped a single into center field, scoring two.

Helena's bullpen after Montas exited allowed just one unearned run over the next 5.1 innings.

Tomorrow the Brewers return home for a three game series with the Billing Mustangs, who are currently in first place in the Northern division. Scott Sunitsch starts for Helena, opposed by Luis Alecis for Billings.

Final: Reno 6, Colorado Springs 2

No game story up yet from the team.

Colorado Springs Box Score

All 6 runs in the game scored early on, and the Sky Sox couldn't mount a comeback. Quiet night for the offense, with Nate Orf bringing the only multi-hit bat to the park. Domingo Santana has become a little bit of a forgotten man now in AAA and while he's hitting .288/.418/.442, he's struck out 41 times in 104 ABs. Not good.

ACES TAKE SECOND GAME IN A ROW FROM SKY SOX

RENO, Nev. – After dropping a nail-biter last night in game one that saw the Sky Sox nearly mount a comeback with five runs scored in the eighth inning, tonight in game two there were no runs scored past the third inning, with the Aces taking the Thursday night contest 6-2.

After last night's game one started with the Reno Aces up 6-2 after three innings, Thursday night's contest also began with the home team up 6-2 through the first three frames. In the bottom of the first, Deven Marrero drew a one-out walk, with Kevin Cron homering one out later to give the Aces a swift 2-0 lead in the second game of this short series.

In the bottom of the second, Reno's offense came to life in a big way, with eight batters coming to the plate and four runs coming home. Jamie Westbrook led off with a single, before Kristopher Negron was hit by pitch to put two on. With two outs on the board, Sky Sox starter Alec Asher threw a wild pitch to advance Negron to second with Westbrook on third, before throwing a second wild pitch for ball four to Ildemaro Vargas to score Westbrook. Marrero then hit a ground-rule double to score Negron, with Vargas having to hold up at third. Socrates Brito followed suit with an RBI double of his own on the first pitch he saw, clearing the bases to make it 6-0 Aces.

Dylan Moore and Nate Orf kicked off the top of the third with a pair of singles for Colorado Springs. Christian Bethancourt then hit into force out, scoring Moore with Orf being thrown out at second and Betahncourt safe at first. Domingo Santana followed up with the Sky Sox third single of the inning, with Jett Bandy immediately following up with the fourth to score Bethancourt and reduce Reno's lead to 6-2.

After three more innings of play, the score had not changed as both pitching staffs had settled in some. Taylor Clarke—Reno's starter—finished the day with six innings pitched, with two runs allowed on seven hits with one walk and seven strikeouts.

The seventh and eighth innings proved to be scoreless as well, giving the Sky Sox one last chance in the top of the ninth to attempt another comeback. With two outs on the board, Shane Opitz and Quintin Berry hit back-to-back singles to give Colorado Springs a little life, before Moore struck out to end the game, giving Reno a 2-0 series lead.

The Sky Sox continue into game three against the Reno Aces tomorrow with a 9:05 p.m. CST scheduled first pitch. Following the three-game series in the Biggest Little City, they will continue on to Tacoma for four games.

Friday's Preview: The Sky Sox are sending righty Brandon Woodruff to the mound to face off against righty Matt Koch.
