Nominee for Bonehead Play of the Year

BruisedCrew

I have the Cardinals- Rockies game on and just saw a play I don’t remember ever seeing before.

With a runner on first and two out, the Cardinal batter strikes out on a ball that bounced in to the catcher. The batter trots toward first and the runner on first takes off for second while the catcher picks up the ball. But instead of throwing to first for the final out, the catcher fires the ball to second, where there happens to be nobody even close to covering. So, the ball sails into CF and the runner swings around to third.

Fortunately, after a hit batter to load the bases, the pitcher struck the next guy out to preserve a 2-1 lead, but not after throwing several unnecessary high stress pitches. .

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

I assume the catcher didn't remember how many strikes were on the guy and was trying to throw out the guy "stealing"?....

Maybe. Or maybe he didn’t realize how many outs there were and was trying to cut down the lead runner. No matter what, his head wasn’t in the game correctly.
