Two Out Ninth Inning Rally Pushes Brewers Past Osprey

Helena Wins For Second Time On The Road When Tied After Eight In 2018

By Greg Mroz / Helena Brewers

cut.jpg

Missoula, MT - The Brewers on a warm Tuesday night at Allegiance Field held the lead for most of the night, and gave it up in the bottom of the eighth inning. With two outs and nobody on in the top of the ninth, it looked as if the game might be going to extras in the Osprey didn't win in walk off fashion. The Brewers got the next four on, scoring three to take a 6-3 lead going into the bottom of the ninth, winning 6-3. Helena is now 5-2 in the second half.

The Brewers got the first two on in the first and failed to score, and Missoula took advantage in the bottom of the frame. With one on and two out, Zack Shannon muscled up a ball to right, sailing over the fence for a two run homer, his eighth of the year.

Helena though punched right back thanks to a defensive miscue. Pablo Abreu walked with two out and nobody on, and Bryan Connell hit a chopper to third that Eddie Hernandez threw wide of first. The ball rolled into the right field bullpen, scoring Abreu easily and moving Connell to third. Jesus Lujano made Hernandez pay for the mistake singling into center field, scoring Connell to tie the game.

Helena took the lead in the fourth as Pablo Abreu hit a solo shot to right center field, his fifth of the year and his third in the second half.

After a 20 pitch first inning, Helena starter Blake Lillis locked in, needing just 44 pitches to complete the next six innings. The lefty forced two double plays and during that stretch and faced just one batter over the minimum.

Lillis went back to the mound for the eighth, but Brandon Leyton took the first pitch he saw and parked it over the left field wall, tying the game at three. Jesus Munoz walked, ending the night for Lillis. Joey Matulovich (W, 2-1) then entered and got the next three in order, with two coming on strike outs.

Bryan Menendez entered for the ninth for Missoula, and got the first two he faced. Brice Turang, who already had two hits in his Helena debut, flipped a ball into left field for a hit to keep the inning alive. Yeison Coca did the same thing, setting up David Fry, who singled into center, scoring Turang and moving Coca to third, giving the Brewers the 4-3 lead. Chad McClanahan then hit a fly ball to right the David Sanchez lost in the lights. It fell for a double and scored both runners, extending the lead to 6-3.

Matulovich allowed two base runners on in the ninth, but struck out the last two to end the game. He has earned the win in each of his last two appearances, striking out 12 over six innings.

Helena looks for their third win in a row tomorrow as Victor Castaneda takes the hill, opposed by Deyni Olivero. First pitch is at 7:05 PM, with the pregame show hitting the airwaves of helenabrewers.net at 6:55 PM.

Helena Box Score

Brice Turang certainly made an impression in his debut with Helena. Batting second in the order and playing shortstop, the Brewers' first rounder had three singles and a walk in 4 official at-bats. He stole a base as well. Turang is now hitting .353/.452/.392 with 8 steals in 9 attempts between the AZL and Helena. Unless he falls on his face or gets injured between now and April of next year, it's pretty much a guarantee that Turang will be part of the 2019 Timber Rattlers squad on opening day.

The bottom three in the order all had 2 hits: CF Pablo Abreu (2-3, 2B, HR, BB, K), 1B Bryan Connell (2-4, 2B), and RF Jesus Lujano (2-4). The 18-year-old Abreu is now hitting .287/.400/.500 (127 wRC+), nearly at the coveted 3/4/5 slash. Can not wait to see him next year in Wisconsin as well.

Only two Brewers pitchers were used, which is somewhat odd for a Pioneer League game. Blake Lillis made it through the first 7 innings and 2 batters, allowing 3 runs on 6 hits and a walk. Also odd and very similar to Victor Castaneda's start last Friday, Lillis struck out absolutely no one. It's good to see Blake go 7+, but he's got to start missing more bats. He has only 18 Ks in 36.1 innings this year, though his 53% GB rate makes up for that a little.

Joey Matulovich relieved Lillis and recorded the final 6 outs, 5 of them via K to contrast Lillis' work. He worked around a Turang error and a walk in the 9th to close it out and get the second win of his career. Matulovich has struck out 17 in 13.1 innings as a pro.

Final: AZL Padres1 7, AZL Brewers 1

AZL Brewers Box Score

Starting pitcher Michele Vassalotti got BABIP-bombed, allowing 10 hits and 7 runs over 2+ innings of work. Relievers allowed just 3 baserunners the rest of the way, but the deficit was too much for the offense as the Baby Brewers fall to the Padrito Unos. Caden Lemons was one of those relievers, allowing a single in his 2 innings, while striking out 3.

Ernesto Martinez and Micah Bello each had two hits. The offense managed one walk against 18 Ks. Ouch.

Final: Reno 10, Colorado Springs 9

SKY SOX RALLY FALLS SHORT IN 10-9 LOSS TO ACES

RENO, Nev. – The Sky Sox rallied with five runs in the eighth inning sparked by Jett Bandy's seventh home run in grand slam fashion to put the Colorado Springs squad within a run, but came up short, falling to the Reno Aces 10-9 in game one of the series at Greater Nevada Field.

After the Sky Sox started things off to take a 2-0 lead with solo runs in the top half of the first and third innings, the Aces broke out in the bottom of the third with six runs after sending 10 batters to the plate to put them in front 6-2.

After Colorado Springs battled back in the top of fourth with a pair of runs sparked by solo home runs courtesy of Christian Bethancourt (18) and Rymer Liriano (19), Reno pounded out five more hits to tack on four more runs and extend their lead to 10-4.

VIDEO: Bethancourt's 18th blast

In the eighth and down six runs, the visiting Sky Sox found life and came within a run. Dylan Moore hit a leadoff single while Tyrone Taylor doubled and Domingo Santana walked to load the bases with one out. That is when Bandy slugged a 1-1 pitch deep to centerfield and over the wall for his seventh home run and first grand slam of the season to make it a 10-9 contest.

In the top of the ninth, Quintin Berry and Moore started the inning with consecutive singles to put the tying run on second base, but the heart of the lineup, Nate Orf, Taylor, and Santana, couldn't get the job done against the Aces' Jake Barrett.

The Sky Sox continue into game two against the Reno Aces Thursday. Following the three-game series in the Biggest Little City, they will continue on to Tacoma for four games.

Thursday's Preview: The Sky Sox are sending righty Alec Asher to the mound to face off against righty Taylor Clarke.

Grand Salami: The eighth-inning grand slam Wednesday by Jett Bandy marks the third of the season for the Sky Sox and first on the road for the team in 2018. It also marks the second grand slam in four games, since Andres Blanco hit one Sunday against Albuquerque at Security Service Field. Kyle Wren marked the first one for the Sky Sox on June 2 against Iowa.

Bash Bros: On Wednesday night, Christian Bethancourt and Rymer Liriano knocked their 18th and 19th home runs respectively. Their home run counts this season lead the way among all players on the Colorado Springs squad.

Orf Continues the Climb: After the two-hit night by Nate Orf, he has moved up the Sky Sox career milestone charts in multiple categories: 1,042 AB, passing Choo Freeman for 16th place on career AB list, 319 hits, passing Jim Tatum for 15th place on career hits list, 215 singles, tying Orf for 13th all-time in singles with Chris Frey, 70 doubles, tying Orf for 12th all-time in doubles with Matt McBride, 104 extra base hits, tying Matt Miller and Jayhawk Owens for 19th place all-time in extra base hits, 474 total bases, passing Ben Paulsen for 18th place in total bases, 143 career RBI, just two RBI away from joining the Top 25 (Choo Freeman, Webster Garrison, and Kyle Wren all tied at 145 RBI).

Trailing: The Sky Sox just missed on improving two season records. When trailing after seven innings, the Sky Sox are now 3-36 while falling to a 0-39 split when trailing after eight innings. The Sky Sox got within a run of the Aces Wednesday night in the seventh with a five-run frame and stranded the potential tying and go-ahead runs on base in the ninth.

Big RBI Night: Jett Bandy tied for a season-high in RBI in a game Wednesday night at Greater Nevada Field with four. The first time he met the feat was on July 24 against El Paso at Security Service Field.

Davies Rehab: Right-handed pitched and Brewers rehabber Zach Davies made his third rehab stint for the Sky Sox Wednesday night, tossing two and two-thirds innings and allowing five runs on just four hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Overall, after three rehab starts with Colorado Springs, he has totaled 8.2 IP, 10 H, 7 ER, 5 BB, 9 K and is 0-2.

Lead Change: Coming into the night, the Sky Sox held a 46-9 record when leading in a game after six innings. Monday night marked the 10th loss for Colorado Springs when leading after six and giving up the lead.

The Hunt For First: The Sky Sox are on the hunt for the second-consecutive playoff run, battling it out with other top contender of the American North – the Oklahoma City Dodgers. Last season, the Sky Sox broke one of the longest postseason droughts in professional sports – taking the American North division for the first time and breaking their 20-year absence. After Wednesday night, the Sky Sox find themselves two games back in the standings.

Reno's no pitcher's environment, but still not satisfying for Zach Davies. Don't discount him getting optioned once "healthy".
