Final: Helena 4, Missoula 3

Brewers Earn Series Split With One Run Win

Helena Now 8-2 In One Run Games

By Greg Mroz / Helena Brewers

Helena, MT - Helena has been locked in in close games in 2018, and got another big win in a close battle on Tuesday night against Missoula. The Brewers got three runs in the third inning and never trailed, holding off a consistent Missoula attack to win 4-3. Helena is now 8-2 in one run games.

Helena broke the scoreless tie in the third, as Bryan Connell started the inning with a single to right. Missoula starter Andy Toelken got the next two, but Yeison Coca delivered with a double just right of the batters eye, scoring Connell to make it 1-0 Brewers. David Fry then doubled home Coca, and Chad McClanahan followed with an RBI single of his own, making it 3-0 Brewers.

Brewers starter Wilfred Salaman was back to his dominant ways, starting his outing with four shutout innings, not allowing a hit. The only base runners that reached in that span were two walks to Buddy Kennedy.

However, Missoula's offense woke in the fifth, as Salaman issued a leadoff walk to Nick Dalesandro, and Jesus Munoz singled with one out. David Sanchez singled home Dalesandro to make it 3-1 Brewers, but Salaman got the next two to end the inning.

The Osprey pushed a run closer in the sixth, as Kennedy started with a double, and scored with one out on a single from Dalesandro. Zack Shannon stood at second with one out, and Salaman got Brandon Leyton to fly out to left, keeping Shannon at second. Manager Nestor Corredor then went to the pen for Michael Mediavilla, who got Jesus Munoz to fly out to end the frame.

Mediavilla held the line out of the Brewers bullpen, striking out four over 2.1 scoreless innings. The Brewers got a key insurance run from Chad McClanahan in the bottom of the eighth, as he left the yard with a solo blast. Helena needed it, as Leyton started the ninth inning with a solo homer to cut the Helena lead to one. Peter Strzelecki then bore down and got the next three in order, securing the victory.

Helena heads to Missoula tomorrow for a two game series at Allegiance Field, with first pitch tomorrow scheduled for 7:05 PM. Blake Lillis takes the hill for Helena, opposed by Erin Baldwin for Missoula.

Helena Box Score

With Eddie Silva off to Wisconsin, Jean Carmona off to the Orioles and Nick Egnatuk/Luis Avila not available for duty (reason not given), the Brewers were down to literally two healthy infielders for Tuesday's game. Chad McClanahan got the start at third base, Yeison Coca played shortstop, and normally-catcher Bryan Torres played second. Torres had played around the infield a little in the DSL, including 31 innings at second base so the position wasn't totally foreign. From what I can tell from Greg Mroz' call, Torres looked fine on defense at the keystone so it's possible the Brewers will keep him out there from time to time. I would expect at least one infield call up from the AZL in the near future. Edwin Sano did not play in last night's AZL game, and he seems like an obvious candidate to be bumped up.

Coca had 3 hits to lead the offense, while McClanahan and Torres each added 2. McClanahan hit his 7th home run, which ties him for the team lead with David Fry. Coca, Torres, and Fry each hit a double.

Wilfred Salaman continued to get results with iffy peripherals, allowing 2 runs on 4 hits while walking and striking out 3, in 5.2 innings of work. Michael Mediavilla continued to get results with great peripherals - he hasn't allowed an earned run with Helena in 5.2 innings, while he's allowed 2 hits, 2 walks, struck out 10, and has induced a truckload of groundballs.

Final: AZL Brewers 4, AZL Angels 2

AZL Brewers Box Score

Just 4 scattered singles for the Baby Brewers but Angels pitchers walked 11, and 4 early runs held up and the AZL club moves to 4-2 in the second half.

Korry Howell, playing 3B and SS, was on base 3 times via a single and 2 walks. Howell also stole 2 more bases, giving him 8 on the year in 8 attempts.

In potential promotion-to-Helena news, Edwin Sano did not play and Brice Turang was pulled in the 6th inning for no apparent reason.

Jayson Rose made his second rehab start and threw 2 full innings this time, allowing no runs. Freisis Adames (4 IP, 4 H, 1 ER, 1 BB, 6 K) and Joel Pinto (3 IP, 1 H, 0 ER, 3 K) finished things off. Pinto's save was his first as a professional.
