Asdrubal Cabrera to the Phillies

Watch Stearns just blow us all away and call up Keston Hiura. I mean, Juan Soto skipped AAA...

I really doubt it. More likely they will roll the dice at SS and acquire a 2B.

What I don’t see is not making a nice improvement at a MI position...so Dozier would be my prediction. Though at the cost some guys are getting this deadline...who knows if Stearns would dare pull the trigger.

That's a lot more of a return than I was expecting for Cabrera. That's a good return for the Mets.

I wanted Escobar and Cabrera more than the other guys potentially available, but there's still plenty out there.

Kilome throws hard but has not pitched that well this year - 1.4 WHIP. Seems like a Diplan or Ponce comp to me (or maybe he's slightly better). I think I would have traded one of those and a low level lottery ticket for Asdrubal.

At some point we need to improve at middle IF.

That seems like Ortiz would have been the ask. No thanks.

I disagree. If the cost is Luis Ortiz, make the deal!

In 4 previous years in the minors, Ortiz has yet to achieve 100 IP in a season.

Currently he is at 62 IP over 15 games (10 starts & 3 games finished). He has a slim chance of getting to 100 this season.

He has suffered injuries in previous years and got hurt again this year.

IMHO, if you can get value for him, make a deal while you can..

I think we end up with Starlin Castro for almost nothing but we take on the contract.

I suggested this more than a month ago and really got raked over the coals for it. But I agree. Castro is better than any of them. Would love it. I’d also like JT and would back up the truck prospect wise if we could get both.

I could have lived with a decent prospect for Cabrera trade, but I think I'm happy other teams are making these deals. I don't think anyone has gotten any huge steals, so I don't blame Stearns for not swinging more deals.

One thing that isn't mentioned often in his success is just the incredible diligence they've shown in checking in with everyone and leaving no stone unturned. I'm sure every gm says "we are so busy right now, phone is ringing off the hook 24/7, working 18 hour days" but you get the impression that Stearns and his team are legit putting in a little more work. They know they'll keep finding bargains if they cover enough ground, and they'll keep looking until they beat the market some way, somehow.

Good post. Agree particularly with the 2nd paragraph.

Seconded. I think CHL is spot on. If you check the price on literally everything it's how you find the best value. Determine the price you're willing to pay and then stick to it. Over the course of 5 years you're going to make a lot of great deals that way. If the great deals present themselves in 2018, super. If not, they want to win in 2019, 2020, 2021, etc.

I'm disappointed by this because Cabrera would have been my personal favorite pickup out of all the "possible" acquisitions. Don't like his defense but like his OBP ability considerably more than players like Dozier or Schoop (nothing against Dozier or Schoop as both of those guys are good players too). I got some mild heat for suggesting a Cabrera for Houser/Supak/Dylan Moore package in the Transactions forum. Granted, Moore was nothing more than a throw-in that would get a late season audition with the Mets. So it would come down to if the Mets wanted 1 guy with big upside who has been a bit of a dropper or two decent (at least) pitching candidates (one MLB bullpen ready with possible starter potential). Obviously we'll never know if that would have been a package the Mets would have considered, but I think it would have been a legitimate offer.
