Out of Venezuela, DSL Brewers C/1B Jesus Chirinos turns 17. Chirinos already has 37 games under his belt as a 16-year-old, and has performed nicely at the plate and in the field. Nice!

Grand Slam for Ray tonight!

At least that offsets the 3ks a little. Kid just needs to make contact and let bat play. Ks need to reduce

Proud member since 2003 (geez ha I was 14 then)

Agreed, but lately it seems like he either destroys a baseball or k's. I'd rather he sacrifice some contact to keep his slugging as long as the obp doesn't suffer, but the k rate needs to drop at least a little.

Torn ACL for Gatewood

Considering Gatewood was one of the rule 5 eligible prospects, what options do the brewers have with him now that he's injured to protect him without having to add to the 40 man? Or does this type of injury effectively crush any interest for Gatewood over the next year?

Feel for the guy, he was having a good year after a terrible start in April.

Final, Game One: DSL Brewers/Indians 6, DSL Dodgers Guerrero 5

Box Score / Game Log

This game was part of a rainout make-up doubleheader, and thus was seven innings.

It was 4-2 Dodgers after just one inning, but the good guys rallied for 3 in the 6th, go-ahead run in the top of the 7th.

The Brewers had a heavy presence here, all seven innings split by just-turned 19-year-old rookie RHP Alexis Ramirez (all five runs earned) and 18-year-old 2nd year Venezuelan RHP Ricardo Velasquez, who finished up nicely with three scoreless and was rewarded with the win.

19-year-old 2nd-year-pro Dominican 3B Rafael Brito was a triple shy of a cycle, scoring two runs and driving in a pair as well. This was Brito's second consecutive 3-for-4 game, and he homered in each. Including a single in the nightcap, Brito raised his line from .171/.212/.250 to .230/.276/.379 in three games. So a .655 OPS in 25 games (87 AB's) on the season.

Three other Brewer farmhands who had struggled this summer had nice nights at the bottom of the lineup. 18-year-old 2nd-year-pro Dominican RF Alejandro Marte doubled twice, 17-year-old switch-hitting Venezuelan 2B Jose Arteaga was 2-for-3, and 18-year-old 2nd-year-pro switch-hitting Panamanian CF Bryan Dimas hit a two-run HR.

So indeed, the Milwaukee kids were the big contributors in this one.

Final, Game Two: DSL Dodgers Guerrero 7, DSL Brewers/Indians 5, eight innings (scheduled for seven)

Box Score / Game Log

This was a makeup of a June 25th rainout, the co-op squad the home team for this one.

The only Brewer pitcher was the final of three hurlers, Domincian RHP Claudio Mota, a rookie despite recently turning 21, and he was saddled with the loss, walking four in two hitless innings (two runs allowed, one earned).

The 14-29 co-op team scored four in the 3rd to take a 5-3 lead at the time.

17-year-old switch-hitting rookie leadoff Dominican CF Reidy Mercado singled and walked and stole his 12th base in 18 attempts.

18-year-old 2nd-year Dominican SS Elian Gonzalez singled three times in four at-bats, yet his 2018 OPS only rose to .583.

Final, Game One: DSL Brewers 6, DSL Phillies White 1

This was a game played to its nine-inning conclusion, it was originally suspended on June 23rd, scoreless in the 2nd inning.

Box Score / Game Log

Keep in mind the ERA's and averages you see in the box score reflect the June 23rd date.

It just so happened that 20-year-old 2nd-year-pro Dominican RHP Jose Romero was available to pick up where he left off a month ago, so his final line is an impressive 7.2 IP, 8 H, 1 R, 2 BB, 2 HBP, 5 K.

To finish up for a save, 19-year-old rookie Dominican RHP Dantel Ramirez continued his fine campaign, and earned praise from Romero for stranding three of his baserunners.

Just 17 years old, Venezuelan rookie RF Oswel Leones, a LH bat, was on base three times, improving his OBP to .382.

Two more hits, including a triple, for studly 17-year-old LH-swinging CF Carlos Rodriguez, raising his rookie line to .352/.378/.455 (.832 OPS).

Yet another 17-year-old, rookie Venezuelan catcher Andres Melendez, reached base three times.

The Brewers Academy is doing some work this year, best we can remember, awesome to see.

Final, Game Two: DSL Brewers 1, DSL Phillies White 0

The 2nd place Cerveceritos (standings here) improve to 28-19 in walk-off fashion.

Box Score / Game Log

Seven-inning nightcap.

The three Brewer hurlers in the box score are 18, 17, and 18 years old respectively, sweet. All three from the D.R., Joandris Tolentino, a lefty, gets the win.

The only Brewer to reach base twice was 17-year-old Dominican 3B Alberis Ferrer, and he rightly scored the winning run:

DSL Brewers Bottom of the 7th

Alberis Ferrer walks.

With Farlyn Manon batting, Alberis Ferrer steals (6) 2nd base.

Farlyn Manon out on a sacrifice bunt, pitcher Efrain Morales to first baseman Cesar Rodriguez. Alberis Ferrer to 3rd.

Offensive Substitution: Pinch-hitter Oswel Leones replaces Jeicor Cristian.

With Oswel Leones batting, wild pitch by Efrain Morales, Alberis Ferrer scores.

The Brewers Academy is doing some work this year, best we can remember, awesome to see.

When that DSL team combines with another draft of primarily HS players next year in Arizona, we may be looking at a really special wave of positional prospects.

We can fill next years entire Arizona OF with high-ish quality international guys, and Melendes at catcher looks to be a nice little prospect as well.

Final: Biloxi 15, Mobile 7

A nine-run 9th!

Biloxi Blows it Open Late

Ray Hits Grand Slam, Erceg Records Five RBI

By Garrett Greene / Biloxi Shuckers

With that score, of course it's an eventful and fine read...

***

Box Score / Game Log

Twenty-five Shuckers reached by base hit, walk, or HBP. Please indulge me by asking you to review that assault without me breaking it down individually at 2:20 in the AM.

Thought both Marcos Diplan and Nate Griep could be names dealt from that second tier of prospects this week. Neither helped the chance of that in this one.

E: Erceg (20, fielding).

OK, so that's a number.

VIDEO: It's Biloxi lowlights, because it's from a Mobile TV station. You can watch Diplan struggle if you wish.

Chiefs Walkoff Wisconsin in Ten Innings

Series finale goes to Peoria

Guessing this was the favorite sentence Chris has written in a while:

The game was the final meeting of the season between the teams.

But seriously, it was a Zach Davies rehab start, so you will want to read about that.

Final: Helena 4, Great Falls 2

Castaneda Deals As Brewers Hold Off Late Voyagers Charge

Righty Allows Just Three Hits Over Six Shutout Innings

By Greg Mroz / Helena Brewers

cut.jpg

Great Falls, MT - Helena right hander Victor Castaneda had long been in search of his first win as a member of the Brewers organization, earning a loss or a no decision in each of his first six starts. On a warm Friday night at Centene Stadium, Castaneda was on his game, allowing just three hits over six shutout innings. The righty left in line for the win, and the Helena bullpen held off a late rally from Great Falls to win 4-2. Helena is now 2-0 in the second half.

Castaneda and Voyagers starter Matt Portland duelled through the first three innings, but Helena finally cracked the ice in the fourth. Jean Carmona started the inning with a single, but remained at first as Portland struck out the next two. He stole second with LG Castillo up, and got to third as the throw to second sailed into center field. Castillo worked a 14 pitch at bat, fouling off eight straight 2-2 pitches. Pitch 14 Castillo drilled off the left center field wall, scoring Carmona easily to give Helena the 1-0 lead.

After the Brewers scored their first run, Castaneda held Great Falls in check over the next three innings, as only two more reached base over his final three frames. While he did not record a strikeout, Castaneda only issued one walk in the game.

With the score still 1-0, Tate Budnick entered for the seventh and surrendered a leadoff single to Romy Gonzalez. A ground out moved him to second, but Budnick got the next two to strike out, stranding the tying run in scoring position.

The clutch escape spring boarded the Brewers in the eighth, as a Luis Avila leadoff double scored on a bunt from Yeison Coca in which a catching error was made by second baseman Amado Nunez, who was covering first. Carmona walked and Chad McClanahan singled to load the bases, and David Fry then reached on a fielders choice with no out recorded, keeping the bases loaded while scoring Coca. Castillo then brought home another on a sacrifice fly, making it 4-0 Brewers.

Budnick ran into trouble in the eighth, as the first three reached on singles, with the first run scoring on a Steele Walker single that moved a runner to third. Lenyn Sosa's ground out scored the second run, but moved Walker to second, and bringing the tying run to the plate with one out. Budnick then punched out Logan Sowers, and with Gonzalez up, Walker tried to steal third, but was thrown out by Mike Alescio to end the inning.

Michael Mediavilla came on for the ninth, and after a leadoff single from Gonzalez, the tying run reached on a walk to Ryan Fitzpatrick. Nunez grounded out to short for the second out, but both runners moved into scoring position. It proved to be a moot point, as Jhoandro Alfaro grounded out to third, ending the game and giving Mediavilla his first save.

Tomorrow Helena returns to Centene Stadium for a Saturday night showdown with the Voyagers, as Scott Sunitsch takes the hill, opposed by Jason Bilous for Great Falls. First pitch is at 7 PM, with the pregame show hitting the airwaves of helenabrewers.net at 6:40.

Helena Box Score

The H-Crew played a pretty clean game outside of a few Yeison Coca baserunning miscues, and capitalized on some shoddy Great Falls defense to move to 2-0 in the second half. Nice to see 3B Jean Carmona on base 3 times as he's been pretty cold at the plate since a fire start to the season.

Starter Victor Castaneda pitched 6 scoreless, but also managed to not strike anyone out in 6 innings of work which is a rare feat. The only Voyager runs allowed came at the expense of some bad BABIP luck off of Tate Budnick in the 8th. Michael Mediavilla picked up his first Helena save after being promoted from the AZL a few days ago.
