Ray being Ray... starting game 3-3 with a 2B

I'd have to imagine he heads to Colorado Springs and sees the Arizona Fall League. That Hiura/ Erceg/ Ray combo may be a fun thing to watch in Milwaukee soon. Erceg seems to be figuring things out as well. Now, which one is traded in the next five days?

I say based on ceiling & who is ahead of them... Erceg is most likely. With Hiura you have an elite hit tool. With Ray, you have an elite explosive athlete (but hit tool is still question) and Erceg’s only elite tool is his arm with solid offensive tools but has similar problem as Gamel with rushing footwork causing many errors.

Erceg will need to start to add versatility... hard to be a one position only hitter on the Brewers (unless you have Hiura’s hit tool) He has got work at SS in past in Arizona & is good enough athlete to maybe play 2nd (waste of arm) or maybe RF with Shaw ahead of him & if Hiura was traded....

To me, I’d love to see what Ray & Hiura could be and there are rolls for them more available to get a chance.

The Shuckers took an early lead on Thursday due to the hitting of Corey Ray, Keston Hiura and Lucas Erceg, but the pitching staff could not deliver, surrounding 14 hits and nine runs on the day. Biloxi lost to Jackson 9-5.

Ray would notch three hits, Hiura a hit and 2 walks, while Erceg would hit a home run. Tyler Heineman would get a pair of hits.

FIVE-RUN FIFTH SENDS GENERALS PAST SHUCKERS

Erceg Homers, Ray Records Three Hits

Garrett Greene, Biloxi Shuckers

JACKSON, TN – The Jackson Generals (56-46, 17-17) scored five runs in the bottom of the fifth as part of a 9-5 comeback win over the Biloxi Shuckers (60-43, 19-14) on Thursday night at the Ballpark at Jackson. Corey Ray went 3-for-5 in the game, his third consecutive multi-hit game.

Biloxi got out to a hot start in the top of the first. Ray ripped a single to right and came around to score on a double from Keston Hiura, putting Biloxi up 1-0 three batters into the game. Lucas Erceg then worked a full count before launching a two-run homer over the right field wall, his 12th of the season, to make it 3-0 Shuckers.

Jackson got on the board in the bottom of the second, loading the bases on a pair of hit batters and a single, setting up a Jose Vinicio RBI single. Another run scored on a fielders’ choice and an error, bringing Jackson within a run at 3-2. RHP Thomas Jankins (L, 9-6) induced a double play that ended the inning, limiting the damage. Generals’ starter RHP Bo Takahashi appeared to injure his hamstring sliding in to second attempting to break up the double play, and exited the game after just two innings.

RHP Bud Jeter (W, 1-1) entered the game for Jackson and allowed just two hits during three innings of work, keeping the Shuckers off the board. The Generals went in front in the bottom of the fifth thanks to RBI knocks from Kevin Medrano, Jay Gonzalez and Marcus Littlewood, scoring five runs to go up 7-3, chasing Jankins before he could complete five frames.

The Shuckers moved within striking distance in the top of the sixth. Tyler Heineman singled off the left field wall to leadoff the inning and scored on a double by Trent Grisham. Gabriel Noriega delivered a sacrifice fly to center that plated Grisham to bring Biloxi within two at 7-5. However, the Generals tagged RHP Daniel Reynolds for another two runs in the home half of the frame, extending their advantage back to four runs at 9-5.

The series comes to a close on Friday night at 6:05 PM Central. Biloxi is slated to send RHP Marcos Diplan (1-1, 3.12) to the mound against RHP Ryan Atkinson (3-11, 5.18).

Via the Sky Sox:

Thursday evening's scheduled contest between the Colorado Springs Sky Sox and the El Paso Chihuahuas at Security Service Field has been cancelled due to heavy rain and wet grounds causing unsafe playing conditions. With Thursday being the final game of the only series against El Paso this season, the game has officially been determined as a "cancelled game" and will not be made up as the two teams will not meet again in 2018.

Final: Wisconsin 3, Peoria 1

Rattlers Top Peoria

Hernández becomes first 10-game winner in MWL

By Chris Mehring / Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

Finally a win in Peoria, yes!

Enjoy Chris' full write-up, including this:

Nelson Hernández picked up the win and became the first pitcher in the Midwest League to reach ten wins on the season. He is also the first Timber Rattlers pitcher to reach ten wins in a season since Tyler Wagner during the 2013 season.

Box Score / Game Log

Fantastic work by RHP's Hernandez and Robbie Hitt in front of over 5,000 on a Thursday night.

Seems like more often than not, Gilbert Lara is 1-for-4 in the box score. Not surprising he's hitting exactly .250 on the season.

RHP Austin Rubick's promotion from Helena to Wisconsin is interesting.

Rubick turns 21 in August, so there wasn't an age-appropriate push.

Nothing but a huge arm indicates that Rubick merited the bump (add 13 career wild pitches to the walk and HBP numbers you see at the link), but of course best wishes to the 2017 20th round pick.

Adam McCalvy with a fine write-up from 2017 here, providing the backstory.

Fry's Big Night Vaults Brewers To Series Opening Win

Nice start to the 2nd half! Unlike the past few seasons, this Helena squad has enough clear talent to qualify for the postseason, we'll see...

Box Score / Game Log

Joey Matulovich! (OK, LHP Blake Lillis, too...)

19-year-old Venezuelan catcher Jose Sibrian has thrown out 39% of baserunners - wouldn't worry about the seven passed balls (nine two years ago in the DSL, his last healthy season), a notoriously tough stat with a bunch of rookie level pitchers on the mound.

Big 3-for-4 night for Je'Von Ward, nice to see the double for the 18-year-old (4th extra-base hit among his 33 knocks).

Carolina 1, Myrtle Beach 0

Roegner, Ortega, Brown and Barker Blank Birds in 1-0 Win

Weston Wilson brought in and scored the only run of the game after hitting a home run in the second

cut.jpeg

Cam Roegner went 5 innings and is now up to 108 innings after just 78 last year. This was the first chance I have gotten to see Jorge Ortega pitch. It looked like he was throwing a cutter but it could have been a little slider I guess. He produced a very Jorge like line with no runs, no walks and no strikeouts. Daniel Brown and Luke Barker finished the shutout. Weston Wilson just keeps on truckin' in July. OPS for July now up to 1.153 for the month and his season's batting average is now over .270.

Cam Roegner: 5 IP, 5 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 K

Jorge Ortega: 2 2/3 IP, 3 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K

Daniel Brown: 1/3 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 K

Luke Barker: 1 IP, 0 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 K

Weston Wilson: 2-2, HR, BB

Final: DSL Brewers 7, DSL Cubs2 0

DSL Brewers Box Score

OF Alwinson Valdez hit his 4th home run in as many games while Henry Medina and Abner Uribe combined on a 6 hit shutout to lead the Brewers to an easy win over the Cubs.

Before his home run streak began, Valdez was slashing .203/.357/.266, which is actually half-way respectable in the DSL. He's now slashing .235/.359/.408, which doesn't seem fantastic on the surface, but it's good for a 123 wRC+, which is similar to what Keston Hiura is doing in Biloxi. We'll take that from a 6'3 17-year-old.

Elsewhere on offense, OF Larry Ernesto added 2 more doubles, bringing his season total to 11. He's slashing .261/.317/.444, with about a 30% K rate, which is higher than you'd like for a top prospect in this league. Another outfielder, young Oswel Leones, had two hits as well to being his season BA up to .292. 1B Francisco Gonzalez and 3B Alberis Ferrer had two hits apiece as well, including a double from Ferrer who is having a sneakily pretty decent season himself.

Medina pitched like Medina again, with a low BB (1) and low K (3) game. He pitched a career-high 7 innings, a feat he has accomplished 3 times previously. Medina also was in a fair amount of trouble early on, including a bases-loaded no-out situation in the top of second that he wriggled out of. Ferrer has been great for 4 of his first 5 pro outings, including this one, but his last outing (0.1 IP, 1 H, 3 ER, 3 BB) still looms over his stat line.

DSL Brewers Game Log

Off the hook:

DSL Cubs2 Top of the 2nd

Kelvin Hidalgo singles on a line drive to center fielder Carlos Rodriguez.

Rafael Herrera singles on a line drive to center fielder Carlos Rodriguez. Kelvin Hidalgo to 2nd.

With Christhian Espinal batting, throwing error by Henry Medina on the pickoff attempt, Kelvin Hidalgo to 3rd. Rafael Herrera to 2nd.

Christhian Espinal walks.

Kevin Miranda ground bunts into a force out, pitcher Henry Medina to catcher Jesus Chirinos. Kelvin Hidalgo out at home. Rafael Herrera to 3rd. Christhian Espinal to 2nd. Kevin Miranda to 1st.

Orlando Zapata flies into a double play, right fielder Larry Ernesto to catcher Jesus Chirinos. Rafael Herrera out at home.

Final: DSL Rays2 15, DSL Brewers/Indians 9

DSL Brewers/Indians Box Score

17-year-old Brazilian Vitor Watanabe both lead-off and played center field for the first time in his young pro career, and was on base 3 times via two singles and a walk. 3B Rafael Brito notched 3 hits including his second home run, and catcher/DH Eduin Lugo had two hits to keep his career BA at .500 after two pro games.

All 15 runs were given up by Indians pitchers.

Final: AZL Brewers 7, AZL Reds 1

AZL Brewers Box Score

The Brewers beat up on the hapless Reds again, sending them to their 24th loss in 29 games. The offense got 2 singles each from 2018 draftees Korry Howell (playing SS in this one) and Arbert Cipion. Howell has quietly had a really nice start to his career, slashing .324/.424/.357 through his first 33 pro PAs, including 5 walks against 4 strikeouts. Pretty similar to Brice Turang, who DH'd in last night's game - Turang is hitting .361/.455/.417 through 44 PAs, including 7 walks against 4 strikeouts. Turang also picked up his 7th steal in 8 attempts (and a good hit/SB ratio.

Carlos Luna started and pitched 3 innings, allowing nothing on a hit and a walk. Hard-throwing 18-year-old Brayan Salaya pitched 4 innings of relief, allowing a run on 3 hits and 2 walks, while striking out 2. The results have been decidedly mixed for Salaya so far after signing back in 2016, but the Brewers clearly like his skill set and fastball that can work into the mid-90's.
